Book excerpt: AN ILLUMINATING ACCOUNT OF THE DMK AND ITS CHARISMATIC FOUNDER In 1967, C.N. Annadurai became the chief minister of Madras state, when his party, the DMK, swept to power for the first time. In this definitive biography, R. Kannan traces the growth of Annadurai—from a young protégé of the radical thinker Periyar E.V. Ramasamy into a revered leader known as Anna, or elder brother. Kannan draws on Anna’s considerable body of writing, and the memoirs of other leaders and authors in Tamil, to candidly examine Anna’s complex relationship with Periyar and his disillusionment with the corruption he witnessed when in power. Featuring luminaries like Rajagopalachari and Kamaraj, K. Karunanidhi and MGR, among many others, Anna offers a warm and rounded portrait of a man who showed the way for the democratic expression of regional aspirations within a united India.

It stretched from Cape Comorian, the southern top of the Indian Peninsula, halfway up the east coast of Bengal.[2]Tamil region, the homeland of the Tamils, occupies the southern-most region of the erstwhile Madras Presidency.[3]The Tamil districts of the Presidency were Chingleput, North Arcot, South Arcot, Salem, Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Trichinoply, Tanjore, Madurai, Ramnad and Tinnevelly.[4] When reorganization of the States was made in 1956, regional adjustments were done and the State of Madras was created on November 1, 1956, as a lingual state with Tamil as its language.

Download or read book Narrative Cultures and the Aesthetics of Religion written by Dirk Johannsen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-01-29 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Narrative Cultures and the Aesthetics of Religion presents the aesthetics of narrativity in religious contexts by approaching narrative acts as situated modes of engaging with reality, equally shaped by the immersive character of the stories told and the sensory qualities of their performances. Introducing narrative cultures as an integrative framework of analysis, the volume builds a bridge between classical content-based approaches to narrative sources and the aesthetic study of religions as constituted by sensory and mediated practices. Studying stories in conjunction with the role that performative acts of storytelling play in the cultivation of the senses, the contributors explore the efficacy of storytelling formats in narrative cultures from ancient times until today, in regions and cultures across the globe. Contributors are: Stefan Binder, Arianna Borrelli, Markus Altena Davidsen, Laura Feldt, Ingvild Sælid Gilhus, Dirk Johannsen, Jens Kreinath, Isabel Laack, Martin Lehnert, Brigitte Luchesi, Bastiaan van Rijn, Caroline Widmer, Annette Wilke, Katharina Wilkens.

Book excerpt: This work, first published in 1968, presents the fabulous world of Hinduism in its entirety in two volumes. It is the first general encyclopedia of Hinduism covering every major aspect of Hindu life and thought, embodying the results of modern scholarship yet not ignoring the traditional point of view. It contains over 700 articles, each of which gives a comprehensive account of the subject, and by a system of cross references interlinks all topics related to it, so that a single theme may be traced in all its ramifications through the whole book. An index of over 8,000 items, which in itself forms a veritable treasury of Sanskrit terms and names, will further assist the researcher finding their way among the lesser topics treated in the work.
