Con el presente estudio, Ana Maria Miralles explica la importancia de responder a esta pregunta e ilustra cuál es la preocupación en relación con la salud de la democracia. Su campo de estudio no se limita a un área geográfica dada o a un determinado genero, pues la autora analiza el periodismo en general. Por un lado, prescinde de los confines territoriales, concretamente de Colombia y América Latina, a favor de una perspectiva global; por el otro, llega a examinar las estructuras internas, empresariales y discursivas, que favorecen la homogeneidad en la información y por tanto contradicen el principio del disenso, constitutivo de la democracia. Después de un recorrido sobre las reflexiones que se han hecho en materia de consenso en el plano político, particularmente desde la filosofía política, Miralles se ocupa de los aspectos estructurales y discursivos que, a su juicio, producen ese efecto de consenso. A partir de las rutinas, las fuentes y otras estrategias de las cuales los periodistas suelen no ser conscientes, se genera un consenso que impide y anula las diferencias convirtiéndose en un auténtico mecanismo de control de las masas. En respuesta a este problema, la autora formula aquí un camino hacia un periodismo democrático, que atienda a las diferencias, que se ocupe de buscar (en lugar de esconder) las visiones realmente pluralistas y que no le tema al disenso. Esa parece ser la única manera de entender el periodismo en sociedades verdaderamente democráticas.
