Download or read book Periodic Mesoporous Organosilicas written by Chang-Sik Ha and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-07 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of the fundamental properties, preparation routes and applications of a novel class of organic–inorganic nanocomposites known as periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMOs). Mesoporous silicas are amorphous inorganic materials which have silicon and oxygen atoms in their framework with pore size ranging from 2 to 50 nm. They can be synthesized from surfactants as templates for the polycondensation of various silicon sources such as tetraalkoxysilane. In general, mesoporous silica materials possess high surface areas, tunable pore diameters, high pore volumes and well uniformly organized porosity. The stable chemical property and the variable ability for chemical modification makes them ideal for many applications such as drug carrier, sensor, separation, catalyst, and adsorbent. Among such mesoporous silicas, in 1999, three groups in Canada, Germany, and Japan independently developed a novel class of organic–inorganic nanocomposites known as periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMOs). The organic functional groups in the frameworks of these solids allow tuning of their surface properties and modification of the bulk properties of the material. The book discusses the properties of PMOs, their preparation, different functionalities and morphology, before going on to applications in fields such as catalysis, drug delivery, sensing, optics, electronic devices, environmental applications (gas sensing and gas adsorption), biomolecule adsorption and chromatography. The book provides fundamental understanding of PMOs and their advanced applications for general materials chemists and is an excellent guide to these promising novel materials for graduate students majoring in chemical engineering, chemistry, polymer science and materials science and engineering.

Book Periodic Mesoporous Organosilica

Download or read book Periodic Mesoporous Organosilica written by Steven Edward Dickson and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is currently a great interest in the field of porous organosilica materials because of the high surface areas (> 1000 m2/g) and narrow pore size distributions which are beneficial for applications such as chromatography, chiral catalysis, sensing or selective adsorption. Periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMOs) represent an interesting class of hybrid silica materials because of the wide variety of bridging organic groups which can be incorporated within the precursors [(OR)3Si-R-Si(OR)3] giving rise to materials with exceptional properties. We have synthesized and characterized various aromatic PMOs composed of supporting structural monomers (phenylene- or biphenylenebridged) and functional stilbene monomers (cis and trans) (1, 2). The effect of the different synthetic procedures and varying amounts of functional stilbene monomer on the properties of the materials was examined. The functional transstilbene component was determined to be well distributed in a phenylene-bridged PMO using P123 as a pore template from TEM techniques with Os staining. The trans-stilbene linkers were completely transformed to aryl aldehydes through ozonolysis with dimethylsulfide workup. Further transformation of the carbonyl functionality to an aryl imine showed a moderate level of success. Enantiomeric forms of a novel, chiral PMO precursor (CM) were synthesized and incorporated into biphenylene-bridged PMOs. Under basic pH conditions templated with C18TMACl, although very low levels of CM are incorporated, enantiomeric forms of chiral, porous materials are obtained as was verified by distinct mirror-image circular dichroism spectra. Powder XRD patterns suggest that a tightly packed asymmetric biphenylene arrangement may be necessary for the optical activity. Preliminary results using these materials as a chiral chromatographic phase are promising. Finally, a thin film morphology of an ethane-bridged PMO incorporating a thiol ligand, (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane, was prepared on a fibre optic cable and used as a component in a heavy-metal sensing application.

Book Mechanical and Dielectric Properties of Self assembled Periodic Nanoporous Silica and Organosilica Materials microform

Download or read book Mechanical and Dielectric Properties of Self assembled Periodic Nanoporous Silica and Organosilica Materials microform written by Hatton, Benjamin D. (Benjamin David) and published by Library and Archives Canada = Bibliothèque et Archives Canada. This book was released on 2005 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years self-assembled, organic supramolecular or colloidal arrays have been used as templates for the design of a wide range of novel nanostructured porous materials, using sol-gel chemistry. Herein, mesoporous silica and organosilica films, and colloidal crystal (opal) films, have been synthesized, and various mechanical and dielectric properties investigated. Highly-ordered, periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) thin films were synthesized from bridged silsesquioxane precursors of the type (EtO) 3SiRSi(OEt)3 (where R is an organic group), and a novel three-ring [(EtO)2Si(CH2)]3 precursor. Detailed structural characterization has been performed using PXRD, SAXS, SEM, and TEM. PMO films may have important applications as low dielectric constant (k) materials in microelectronics. Capacitance measurements showed that k decreased with organic content to & sim;1.8. A novel 'self-hydrophobization' behaviour has been demonstrated, using a bridge-terminal transformation of the organic groups at 400--550°C, to lower k and make the films highly resistant to moisture adsorption. A series of novel dendrimer and 'semi-dendrimer' PMO thin films have been synthesized using cationic and block copolymer templates, to further increase the organic content. As a result, the number of organic bridges attached to each Si is increased as a series, from 0 to 4.A series of spin-coated mesoporous silica films were synthesized using a surfactant template, using evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA). The porosity was controlled by the surfactant/silica molar ratio, thermally-induced collapse at 300--900°C, and deposition within the channels. The Young's modulus (E) and hardness (H) were measured using nanoindentation, and the results have been compared with conventional models for porous materials. A series of molecular mechanics atomic models of mesoporous silica were used to simulate the elastic and plastic deformation as a function of pore diameter. Finally, chemical vapour deposition (CVD) was used to sinter silica opal films to systematically control the optical Bragg diffraction and the structural connectivity. SiCl4 and Si(OMe)4 vapour were used to deposit silica layers to grow necks between silica spheres. Nanoindentation was used to measure E and H as a function of the silica deposition.

Book Pore Control in Mesoporous Silica for Cargo Delivery and Sensing Applications

Download or read book Pore Control in Mesoporous Silica for Cargo Delivery and Sensing Applications written by Melissa Mei-Lee Russell and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mesoporous silica materials can range from films to nanoparticles. Due to the Si-OH groups on the surface of the materials they can be functionalized to control the pore openings. Some examples of these functionalizations are the attachment of polymers or molecules that serve as a pore cap. This leads to a wide variety of applications because of their ability to contain cargo molecules. The work covered in this thesis focuses on the development of different mesoporous silica materials for the purpose of trapping various cargo molecules for cargo delivery and sensing applications. The first project discusses the thermal trapping and release of cargo molecules of a mesoporous silica film with a thermal sensitive polymer attached to the surface. The second project focuses on a light activated polymer attached to MCM-41 silica nanoparticles and the delivery of fluorescent molecules inside of cells. The third project discussed in this thesis utilizes hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles to crystalize a perchlorate sensor inside the core to be used as "smart sand" for perchlorate detection. The last project focuses on periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) nanoparticles and their ability to trap and release cargo molecules. This research demonstrates the versatility of mesoporous silica materials and its potential in both microscopic and macroscopic applications.
