The symposium provided a forum for discussing the role of essential and toxic elements such as magnesium and chromium in human health and disease. Comprised of 21 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of magnesium deficiency and magnesium toxicity in humans, followed by an analysis of magnesium deficiency and its relation to calcium, parathyroid hormone, and bone metabolism. The reader is then introduced to the biochemistry and physiology of magnesium, along with chromium metabolism and its biochemical effects on humans. Subsequent chapters deal with the metabolism and biochemistry of selenium and sulfur; the health and disease implications of selenium and glutathione peroxidase; effect of pre-eruptive or post-eruptive fluoride administration on caries susceptibility in the rat; and perinatal effects of trace element deficiencies. The book also considers the basis of recommended dietary allowances for trace elements before concluding with a description of quantitative measures of the toxicity of mercury in humans. This book will be useful to physicians, researchers, nutritionists, and toxicologists.

Book excerpt: The vast growth of knowledge in recent years concerning the functional role of serotonergic systems in central nervous system function prompted the organization of the symposium. The organiz ing committees felt at the onset that the field of serotonin research had grown so rapidly that it would be impossible to cover every aspect of it in individual symposia. Thus it was felt that certain areas of research had to be omitted due to time constraints, and we extend an apology to the researchers in areas not included in these proceedings. Rather it was hoped to provide a balance overview of the field, starting with the anatomy of serotonergic systems and proceeding to the level of the serotonergic receptors at the cell membrane, and then inside the neuron to discuss the regulation of serotonin bisynthesis and integration within indole mine systems. The functional aspects of serotonergic transmission focused on the emerging role of this amine in the processing of nociceptive information, singly or in tandem with other neurotran smitters or neuromodulators. A separate symposium dealt with a variety of animal models suitable for the analysis of the role of serotonin in behavior, and finally led to the evaluation of serotonin metabolism in the study of abnormal human behavior. The editors would like to dedicate these proceedings on /Serotonin - Current Aspects of Neurochemistry and Function/ to two pioneers in this field, Dr. Irving Page and Dr. Maurice Rapport.

However, some volumes may be devoted to one partic ular problem, with individual reviews and papers examining various aspects of it. The composition of the editorial board and the international advisory board reflects these objectives. The editors are members of the senior scientific staff of the Addiction Research Foundation of Ontario.

Book excerpt: In less than 40 years teratology has grown from a little known discipline concerned with studies on the effects of a few physical and chemical stresses on developing fish, amphibians, and birds, to a discipline embracing a vast accumulation of literature on experimental studies in many animal forms and the results of intensive scrutiny of human development under varied conditions, as well. Emphasis has shifted from preoccupation with descrip tions of anatomical defects to concern about subtle and interacting causative factors, to searches for the early reactions to these at the cellular and subcellu lar levels, and to identification of abnormality in the chemical, the functional, and the ultrastructural realms. These changes in orientation have quite naturally made necessary the recruitment of concepts, methods, and expertise from other disciplines. Hence the foundations of teratology, which once were largely morphological, have extended into genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, reproductive physiology, epidemiology, and several aspects of veteri nary and clinical medicine. It is not surprising that a student or new investigator approaching the field of teratology may feel some dismay when confronted with the confusing array of cross-disciplinary concepts and principles it encompasses today. One of the aims of this work is to introduce what the editors believe is a logical thread of continuity into a field that may be regarded by some as a welter of disordered information.

Book excerpt: The "Development of Attachment and Affiliative Systems" was selected as the topic for a three-day workshop held at Estes Park, Colorado, in May, 1980. The papers which resulted from this effort not only reflect a recent intensity of research in this area, but also highlight a mounting need for ask ing questions across disciplines and for integrating theories. The sponsor of the workshop was the Developmental Psychobiology Research Group (DPRG) of the Department of Psychiatry, University of Colorado Medical School, a group which itself is interdisciplinary and which has met regularly since 1969 to criticize research, ask questions, and discuss findings. In 1974, the Group was awarded an endowment fund by the Grant Foundation after a request for a proposal initiated by Philip Sapir and Douglas Bond. The aims of this fund are to facilitate the research of young investigators, to encourage new research, and to provide seed money for collaborative ventures. Much of what is reported here results from that support. Thus, happily, not only are the contributions timely by virtue of converging on an important topic, but they also commemorate more than five years of Grant Foundation support. Once the topic was chosen, a small number of guests were invited to participate. The papers of Timiras, Sackett, Konner, and Lamb represent dif fering perspectives from neurobiology, primatology, cultural anthropology, and social psychology.
