Book excerpt: "1 Clinical history, clinical correlations with placental pathology and prematurity The initial steps in the process of perinatal nervous system evaluation, namely the planning of the optimal approach and choice of samples to be obtained, are driven by the clinical context. Of key importance are the following data: a. Gestational age at time of demise (if stillborn); or gestational age and postnatal age (if liveborn), for comparison with normative standards of development (see Appendix); b. State of maternal health (age, parity, pre-existing medical conditions or ones appearing during gestation or around the time of delivery, exposure to medications/toxins/infections), and of health of siblings or other family members: - Concerns for inherited (i.e., genetic) conditions, metabolic disorders, congenital infections, etc., may indicate the need for special testing; c. Details of prenatal course, including any imaging, amniocentesis, or monitoring: - Prenatal imaging modalities most commonly consist of transabdominal ultrasonography, generally done at the time of the first prenatal visit (to confirm pregnancy) or more usually in the mid-second-trimester for detection of fetal or placental anomalies"--

Book Fetal and Neonatal Pathology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jean W. Keeling
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-03-09
  • ISBN : 1447138023
  • Pages : 1188 pages

Download or read book Fetal and Neonatal Pathology written by Jean W. Keeling and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 1188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic in the field! The first edition of this highly readable and practical text quickly established a reputation as the best single source of information on common pathological findings in the perinatal setting. Morbid anatomists and histopathologists the world over turn to Dr. Keeling's book to help them find appropriate methods of investigation for discovering fetal abnormality in the second and third trimester and in neonatal death. Expanded and up-to-date! The second edition has been considerably expanded and revised to reflect recent modifications in clinical practice, yet it still provides complete and unique coverage in only one volume. Clearly organized to give both clinical background and system-by-system coverage! Following the format of the first edition, the first half of the book discusses problems encountered in fetal/perinatal pathology with some essential clinical background; the second half illustrates pathological conditions system by system. The differences between second and third trimester conditions are explicitly shown. Cross-referenced for easy access! Related conditions and pathological details are cross-referenced between the sections by chapter and page number so that complete access to all the information is guaranteed. From the many excellent reviews of the first edition:"Not the least of its winning points is its readability throughout. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who has anything at all to do with fetuses and neonates professionally." #Pathology#1 "The book contains an enormous quantity of information on aspects of the subject not available elsewhere and well-chosen, up-to-date references throughout. It should certainly be available for reference in all departments concerned with perinatal medicine..." #The Lancet#2 "It succeeds splendidly in providing the general histopathologist with a clear outline of perinatal pathology, and destroys any residual reasons for regarding this branch of pathology as being on the one hand, uninformative or, on the other hand, enveloped in a mystique of its own. ... It should be in the hands of, or at least available to, all general pathologists called upon to perform perinatal autopsies; many non-pathologists concerned with fetal development and disorders will also find this text of considerable interest." #Placenta#3 "If one were allowed a single reference book on fetal and neonatal pathology this would be the one to have!" #Pathology#4

Book Physiology and Pathology in the Perinatal Period

Download or read book Physiology and Pathology in the Perinatal Period written by R.H. Gevers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The course of history is never one of smooth progression. Periods of relative quietness are interrupted by periods of wars and revolution. This pattern resembles that of a river which, before flowing into the delta, has to pass countless rapids. The same holds for the development of the science of medicine. In obstetrics some of these 'revolutions' or 'rapids' consist of the introduction of conservative obstetrical treatment by Lucas Johann Boer at the beginning of the nineteenth century, the discovery of the cause of puerperal sepsis by Oliver Wendell Holmes and Semmelweiss between 1843 and 1847, the introduction of the principle of asepsis by Pasteur in 1874, the introduction of prenatal care at the end of the nine teenth and the beginning of the twentieth century (Mijnlieff, Treub, De Snoo), the improvement of surgical techniques, the possibility to treat shock by bloodtransfusion, and, finally, the acquisition of new means for the effective therapy of infection. All these developments have led to a sharp reduction of maternal and perinatal mortality. In this connection it must be pointed out that such a reduction could never have been accomplished without the favourable social changes as a result of which medical and prenatal care could be made universally available. In recent years there has been another revolutionary develop ment in obstetrics. Two factors have been responsible for this: the ap plication of basic sciences in obstetrics, and the dissolution of the isolation with respect to other clinical disciplines.
