Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Perils of Wealth and Poverty In February 1913 the Nineteenth Century and After published an article by Canon Barnett in which he dwelt on the stunted lives of the poor, and urged the duty of cheerfully meeting the financial responsibilities which would be involved in remedying the conditions under which they lived. From various readers came the request that my husband would expand the ideas contained into a small book. Though he was much out of health the call to serve the poor met with the usual response, and he had been at work about six weeks on the book when he became too ill ever to finish it. Usually he and I worked at our publications together, but circumstances prevented me from doing my share then, and now it has come to me to do it alone. Download or read book Riches and Poverty Classic Reprint written by L. G. Chiozza Money and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Riches and Poverty His book makes no pretence to be a complete examina tion of the important subject of the distribution of wealth. Indeed, as its contents will show, the material does not exist to enable a writer, however industrious, to present a picture of Riches and Poverty in the United Kingdom in more than broad outlines. Nevertheless, within the limits of a margin of error not large enough seriously to affect the truth of its conclusions, the following examination of the contents of our collective purse gives a general survey of the subject which, it is hoped, will be found of some value to sociologists and not less interesting to the reader than it has proved to the author. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1915 edition. Excerpt: ... CONCERNING PURPOSE AND METHOD The best remedy and the only permanent remedy for any evil is the removal of its cause. That is God's way of dealing with sin in the individual life. He cleanses the heart, out of which wicked purposes and desires have been springing. It is His way of correcting the wrongs of human society. He awakens the national conscience and organized forces of evil are routed. Slavery is abolished, the liquor traffic is prohibited, child labor is forbidden and endless suffering and social injustice are prevented by the removal of their causes from the social fabric of the State. Slowly, but surely, men and women are learning to understand and to imitate God's method. They are being admitted more and more into fellowship with Him, as co-workers in the achievement of His high purposes for the regeneration and the perfecting of the individual and of the human race. But many wrongs remain to be righted. The social organism is still suffering from diseases, the secret of the remedy for which lies in a better understanding and a gradual elimination of those conditions out of which they spring. Among such lingering evils are the hatreds and enmities, the arrogance and the suffering, the dissipation and the privation, the temptation and the sin, resulting from the unequal distribution of the fruits of human toil and skill and the consequent extremes of wealth and poverty, as they are found side by side in awful contrast in modern society. What have the Christian Church and the individual Christian disciple to do with these conditions? What measure of responsibility for their correction falls on them? How may this responsibility be forced upon the conscience of the individual disciple? And what and where is the remedy to be...

Download or read book Progress and Poverty Vol 1 written by Henry George and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progress and Poverty, Vol. 1: An Inquiry Into the Cause of Industrial Depressions and of Increase of Want With Increase of Wealth; The Remedy The views herein set forth were in the main briefly stated in a pamphlet entitled Our Land and Land Policy, published in San Francisco in 1871. I then intended, as soon as I could, to present them more fully, but the opportunity did not for a long time occur. In the meanwhile I became even more firmly convinced of their truth, and saw more completely and clearly their relations; and I also saw how many false ideas and erroneous habits of thought stood in the way of their recognition, and how necessary it was to go over the whole ground. This I have here tried to do, as thoroughly as space would permit. It has been necessary for me to clear away before I could build up, and to write at once for those who have made no previous study of such subjects, and for those who are familiar with economic reason ings; and, so great is the scope of the argument that it has been impossible to treat with the fullness they deserve many of the ques tions raised. What I have most endeavored to do is to establish general principles, trusting to my readers to carry further their applications where this is needed. In certain respects this book will be best appreciated by those who have some knowledge of economic literature; but no previous read ing is necessary to the understanding of the argument or the passing of judgment upon its conclusions. The facts upon which I have relied are not facts which can be verified only by a search through libraries. They are facts of common observation and common knowledge, which every reader can verify for himself, just as he can decide whether the reasoning from them is or is not valid. Book The Crime of Poverty Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Crime of Poverty Classic Reprint written by Henry George and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Crime of Poverty Adies and gentlemen: I propose to talk to you tonight of the Crime of Poverty. I cannot, in a short time, hope to convince you of much; but the thing of things I should like to show you is that poverty is a crime. I do not mean that it is a crime to be poor. Murder is a crime; but it is not a crime to be murdered; and a man who is in poverty I look upon not as a criminal in himself so much as the victim of a crime for which others, as well, perhaps, as himself, are responsible. That poverty is a curse, the bitterest of curses, we all know. Carlyle was right when he said that the hell of which Englishmen were most afraid was the hell of poverty; and this is true, not of Englishmen alone, but of people all over the civilized world, no matter what their nationality. It is to escape this hell that we strive and strain and struggle; and work on oftentimes in blind habit long after the necessity for work is gone. The curse born of poverty is not confined to the poor alone; it runs through all classes, even to the very rich. They, too, suffer; they must suffer; for there cannot be suffering in a community from which any class can totally escape. The vice, the crime, the ignorance, the meanness, born of poverty, poison, so to speak, the very air which rich and poor alike must breathe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progress and Poverty, Vol. 2: An Inquiry Into the Cause of Industrial Depressions and of Increase of Want With Increase of Wealth, the Remedy And, so, if one individual work more hours than the average, he will increase his wages; but the wages of all cannot be increased in this way. It is notorious that in occupations where working hours are long, wages are not higher than where working hours are shorter; generally the reverse, for the longer the working day, the more helpless does the laborer become - the less time has he to look around him and develop other powers than those called forth by his work; the less becomes his ability to change his occupation or to take advantage of circum stances. And, so, the individual workman who gets his wife and children to assist him may thus increase his ih come; but in occupations where it has become habitual for the wife and children of the laborer to supplement his work, it is notorious that the wages earned by the whole family do not on the average exceed those of the head of the family in occupations where it is usual for him only to work. Swiss family labor in watch making competes in cheapness with American machinery. The Bohemian cigar makers of New York, who work, men, women, and children, in their tenement-house rooms, have reduced the prices of cigar making to less than the Chinese in San Francisco were getting. Book Capital in the Twenty First Century

Download or read book Capital in the Twenty First Century written by Thomas Piketty and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-14 with total page 817 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the grand dynamics that drive the accumulation and distribution of capital? Questions about the long-term evolution of inequality, the concentration of wealth, and the prospects for economic growth lie at the heart of political economy. But satisfactory answers have been hard to find for lack of adequate data and clear guiding theories. In this work the author analyzes a unique collection of data from twenty countries, ranging as far back as the eighteenth century, to uncover key economic and social patterns. His findings transform debate and set the agenda for the next generation of thought about wealth and inequality. He shows that modern economic growth and the diffusion of knowledge have allowed us to avoid inequalities on the apocalyptic scale predicted by Karl Marx. But we have not modified the deep structures of capital and inequality as much as we thought in the optimistic decades following World War II. The main driver of inequality--the tendency of returns on capital to exceed the rate of economic growth--today threatens to generate extreme inequalities that stir discontent and undermine democratic values if political action is not taken. But economic trends are not acts of God. Political action has curbed dangerous inequalities in the past, the author says, and may do so again. This original work reorients our understanding of economic history and confronts us with sobering lessons for today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Menace of Privilege: A Study of the Dangers to the Republic From the Existence of a Favored Class What is the cause of the grave changes that are coming over the American Republic the extraordinary in equality in the distribution of wealth manifested on every hand; the rise of class feeling; the growth of the aristo cratic idea; the lapse from morals in business and private relations among the very rich; the growth of elements of physical, mental and moral deterioration among the work ing masses; the appearance of militant trade-unionism; the perversion of the injunction principle and the use of soldiers in strikes; the corruption of Federal, State and municipal politics; the deterring of press, university and pulpit from an open expression; the centralization of government; the advances in foreign aggression? Such things did not exist at the foundation of the Repub lic. Why should they now appear when we have grown so wonderfully in population and wealth? Why should this age contrast so unfavorably with that when the nation numbered less than our chief city now contains? The answer is that something is rampant now that existed only in rudimentary form then. That something is Privilege.
