Book Heaven in Disorder

    Book Details:
  • Author : Slavoj Zizek
  • Publisher : OR Books
  • Release : 2022-04-05
  • ISBN : 9781682192818
  • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book Heaven in Disorder written by Slavoj Zizek and published by OR Books. This book was released on 2022-04-05 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we emerge (though perhaps only temporarily) from the pandemic, other crises move center stage: outrageous inequality, climate disaster, desperate refugees, mounting tensions of a new cold war. The abiding motif of our time is relentless chaos. Acknowledging the possibilities for new beginnings at such moments, Mao Zedong famously proclaimed "There is great disorder under heaven; the situation is excellent." The contemporary relevance of Mao's observation depends on whether today's catastrophes can be a catalyst for progress or have passed over into something terrible and irretrievable. Perhaps the disorder is no longer under, but in heaven itself. Characteristically rich in paradoxes and reversals that entertain as well as illuminate, Slavoj Žižek's new book treats with equal analytical depth the lessons of Rammstein and Corbyn, Morales and Orwell, Lenin and Christ. It excavates universal truths from local political sites across Palestine and Chile, France and Kurdistan, and beyond. Heaven In Disorder looks with fervid dispassion at the fracturing of the Left, the empty promises of liberal democracy, and the tepid compromises offered by the powerful. From the ashes of these failures, Žižek asserts the need for international solidarity, economic transformation, and--above all--an urgent, "wartime" communism.

Book The Real Proof of Heaven

Download or read book The Real Proof of Heaven written by Sam Oputa and published by Sam Oputa. This book was released on 2021-05-07 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is indeed a Heaven. Heaven, it is said, is the quintessential place for only clean souls that had earlier experienced the earth. Though the general assumption is that only dead people can have access to this “Gorgeous place,” humans have been inside it, and the Bible says so. Heaven, however, is not what the Church has made it out to be. For the Church, Heaven is a tool. The Bible tells us what Heaven is, but the Church interprets Heaven to be what they want it to be. In The Real Proof of Heaven: What & Where Is It? we take you on a profound journey into the heart of ancient mind-set and practices, revealing a breathtaking, hidden reality that will transform your life forever and in many ways. We will literarily take you to Heaven. We are able to take you to the real Heaven because the Ages are exposing the hidden secrets to Mankind. You will see and understand what Heaven is. Far from offering simple interpretations, platitudes, and general principles, The Real Proof of Heaven: What & Where Is It drags you out of the surprisingly archaic thinking that gave us the biblical Heaven in the world of the ancients through various ages while using modern knowledge as a guide. Yes, you will literarily see Heaven as it is because Heaven is as real in the Bible as it is real today. It is physical. It is out there floating in space as one of the biggest spaceships unlimited and uninhibited by space. Heaven is in this universe, in this dimension and with time, someday, humans will start to interact with it. While presenting you with all the incredible evidence to support this, you will discover for yourself that modernity has not put a dent in how or what the ancients thought, believed, and worshipped compared to religious practices of modern people. They were/are the same concepts as people older than us have inferred in their ancient testimonies. The perspectives between the old and new are still the same even while modern peoples spin the same old practices as if it has been koshered. It will be disheartening that many people will have to go to their graves believing what they believe—a lie. The biggest lies of them all—a Heaven and a Hell. Religious texts must be radically and truthfully interpreted as the Ages open up its hidden knowledge to Mankind. Misinterpretation is one reason the pages seem lost on theistic ears already dejected, listening to the words coming out of the mouth of a preacher who is struggling to make a story line out of the texts written thousands of years ago. Millions of people have believed in teachings that were intended for disinformation. They believed because, in the eyes of the innocent, the teachings appear to be convincing and true. If you don’t believe their teachings, they convince you that there is a thing called faith. When that fails, they describe your culture and practices as paganism and Satanism. They make you feel less of a human and even threaten your well-being and life. They are succeeding, especially with the promise of Heaven or Hell in an afterlife as your only two choices. Any attempt and indeed all the attempts to convince you and me, one way or the other, about a proof of a Heaven, is disingenuous and will remain disingenuous. There is no way as a material being that you could interpret the immaterial. It is near impossible. It is even crazy to try and think of it. Whether they say it is by Near Death Experience (NDE), don’t cut it. It does not work that way. Near death experiences is not death. A near miss after shooting a game is not same as a kill. Near death experiences are not the real transformation to another dimension. If a bird dodged my catapult shot, the bird was not near death. The bird might not even know that it has been shot at. Death is death, not near death. Near death experiences are like experiences between dreams and lives: you don’t know what dimension you were in in both experiences until you wake up.

Book Heaven No Hell

Download or read book Heaven No Hell written by Michael DeForge and published by Drawn and Quarterly. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One of the most inventive and prolific cartoonists working today."—Vulture In the past ten years, Michael DeForge has released eleven books. While his style and approach have evolved, he has never wavered from taut character studies and incisive social commentary with a focus on humor. He has deeply probed subjects like identity, gentrification, fame, and sexual desire. In “No Hell,” an angel’s tour of the five tiers of heaven reveals her obsession with a haunting infidelity. In “Raising,” a couple uses an app to see what their unborn child would look like. Of course, what begins as a simple face-melding experiment becomes a nightmare of too-much-information where the young couple is forced to confront their terrible choices. “Recommended for You” is an anxious retelling of our narrator’s favorite TV show—a Purge-like societal collapse drama—as a reflection of our desire for meaning in pop culture. Each of these stories shows the inner turmoil of an ordinary person coming to grips with a world vastly different than their initial perception of it. The humor is searing and the emotional weight lingers long after the story ends. Heaven No Hell collects DeForge’s best work yet. His ability to dig into a subject and break it down with beautiful drawings and sharp writing makes him one of the finest short story writers of the past decade, in comics or beyond. Heaven No Hell is always funny, sometimes sad, and continuously innovative in its deconstruction of society.

Book excerpt: An all-new epic tale of terror and redemption set in the hinterlands of midcentury New Mexico from the acclaimed author of The Troop—which Stephen King raved “scared the hell out of me and I couldn’t put it down...old-school horror at its best.” From electrifying horror author Nick Cutter comes a haunting new novel, reminiscent of Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian and Stephen King’s It, in which a trio of mismatched mercenaries is hired by a young woman for a deceptively simple task: check in on her nephew, who may have been taken against his will to a remote New Mexico backwoods settlement called Little Heaven. Shortly after they arrive, things begin to turn ominous. Stirrings in the woods and over the treetops—the brooding shape of a monolith known as the Black Rock casts its terrible pall. Paranoia and distrust grips the settlement. The escape routes are gradually cut off as events spiral towards madness. Hell—or the closest thing to it—invades Little Heaven. The remaining occupants are forced to take a stand and fight back, but whatever has cast its dark eye on Little Heaven is now marshaling its powers...and it wants them all.

Book After Lives

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Casey
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2009-11-04
  • ISBN : 0199754861
  • Pages : 482 pages

Download or read book After Lives written by John Casey and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-11-04 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most profound, deeply affecting questions we face as human beings is the matter of our mortality--and its connection to immortality. Ancient animist ghost cultures, Egyptian mummification, late Jewish hopes of resurrection, Christian eternal salvation, Muslim belief in hell and paradise all spring from a remarkably consistent impulse to tether a triumph over death to our conduct in life. In After Lives, British scholar John Casey provides a rich historical and philosophical exploration of the world beyond, from the ancient Egyptians to St. Thomas Aquinas, from Martin Luther to modern Mormons. In a lively, wide-ranging discussion, he examines such topics as predestination, purgatory, Spiritualism, the Rapture, Armageddon and current Muslim apocalyptics, as well as the impact of such influences as the New Testament, St. Augustine, Dante, and the Second Vatican Council. Ideas of heaven and hell, Casey argues, illuminate how we understand the ultimate nature of sin, justice, punishment, and our moral sense itself. The concepts of eternal bliss and eternal punishment express--and test--our ideas of good and evil. For example, the ancient Egyptians saw the afterlife as flowing from ma'at, a sense of being in harmony with life, a concept that includes truth, order, justice, and the fundamental law of the universe. "It is an optimistic view of life," he writes. "It is an ethic that connects wisdom with moral goodness." Perhaps just as revealing, Casey finds, are modern secular interpretations of heaven and hell, as he probes the place of goodness, virtue, and happiness in the age of psychology and scientific investigation. With elegant prose, a magisterial grasp of a vast literary and religious history, and moments of humor and irony, After Lives sheds new light on the question of life, death, and morality in human culture.

Book Eternal Life and Human Happiness in Heaven

Download or read book Eternal Life and Human Happiness in Heaven written by Christopher M. Brown and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2021-08-22 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eternal Life and Human Happiness in Heaven treats four apparent problems concerning eternal life in order to clarify our thinking about perfect human happiness in heaven. The teachings of St. Thomas Aquinas provide the basis for solutions to these four problems about eternal life insofar as his teachings call into question common contemporary theological or philosophical presuppositions about God, human persons, and the nature of heaven itself. Indeed, these Thomistic solutions often require us to think very differently from our contemporaries. But thinking differently with St. Thomas is worth it: for the Thomistic solutions to these apparent problems are more satisfying, on both theological and philosophical grounds, than a number of contemporary theological and philosophical approaches. Christopher Brown deploys his argument in four sections. The first section lays out, in three chapters, four apparent problems concerning eternal life—Is heaven a mystical or social reality? Is heaven other-worldly or this-worldly? Is heaven static or dynamic? Won’t human persons eventually get bored in heaven? Brown then explains how and why some important contemporary Christian theologians and philosophers resolve these problems, and notes serious problems with each of these contemporary solutions. The second section explains, in five chapters, St. Thomas’ significant distinction between the essential reward of the saints in heaven and the accidental reward, and treats in detail his account of that in which the essential reward consists, namely, the beatific vision and the proper accidents of the vision (delight, joy, and charity). The third section treats, in five chapters, St. Thomas’ views on the multifaceted accidental reward in heaven, where the accidental reward includes, among other things, glorified human embodiment, participation in the communion of the saints, and the joy experienced by the saints in sensing God’s “new heavens and new earth.” Finally, section four argues, in four chapters, that St. Thomas’ views allow for powerful solutions to the four apparent problems about eternal life examined in the first section. These solutions are powerful because, not only are they consistent with authoritative, Catholic Christian Tradition, but they do not raise any of the significant theological or philosophical problems that attend the contemporary theological and philosophical solutions examined in the first section.

This second collection brings together more than seventy columns created from little glimpses and reflections from all corners of the country, the musings of a poet's mind, and the corners and alleyways of our literary heritage. Malcolm's lucid, perceptive and imaginative columns follow a similar pattern to the sonnets for which he is so renowned, with a sense of development, of a turn or volta part way through, and a sense that the end revisits and re-reads the opening.
