Book Performance Tests of Wire Strain Gages

Download or read book Performance Tests of Wire Strain Gages written by William R. Campbell and published by . This book was released on 1944 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of calibrations in axial tension over the strain range of 0 to 0.0024 are presented for 15 types of single element multistrand wire strain gages. The majority of gages showed significant differences between the calibration factors for strain increasing the strain decreasing. Zero shift and nonlinearity between gage output and strain were present in nearly all gages. Improvement in gage performance after preloading was apparent in most cases. The maximum difference between the calibration factors for the gages of a given type and the average factor for the type ranged from 1 percent or less for the gages of types B, F, I., M, N, and J to more than 7 percent for the gage of types G and H.

Book Performance Tests of Wire strain Gages

Download or read book Performance Tests of Wire strain Gages written by William R. Campbell and published by . This book was released on 1948 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Variations in calibration factor and gage resistance with temperature are given for 15 types of single-element, multistrand wire strain gage. For 13 types of gage the maximum difference between room temperature calibration factor and that between -73 and 93 degrees C did not exceed 4 percent. Measurements of unit change in gage resistance between -73 and 93 degrees C on gages attached to unstressed steel and aluminum-alloy bars indicated for 12 out of 14 types of gage a scatter in gage output for 10 gages of a given type which did not exceed 10 x 10−6 / degrees C.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of calibrations in axial tension over the strain range of 0 to 0.03 are presented for 15 types of single element, multistrand wire strain gages. The relation between change in resistance and strain showed deviations from linearity to a strain of about 0.01 which were of the same order as the deviations previously found in tensile calibrations at low strains. At higher strains the curve of change in resistance versus strain in many cases approached a straight line having lower slope than the initial slope. Gages failed by rupture of the wire strands in 58 percent of the calibrations. Measurements for decreasing strain after an applied strain of 0.03 indicated hysteresis in all cases. The strains computed from the measured changes in resistance of gages of types A, C-1, D, and F, using the average calibration factors for low tensile strains, differed less than 5 percent from the measured strains up to a strain of 0.03.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of tests to determine the combined effects of rigidity and thickness of wire strain gages on indicated bending strains in thin sheet metal are presented for 15 types of single-element multistrand wire strain gages. In most cases the indicated extreme-fiber bending strain was greater than the actual strain. It was concluded that the positive error caused by the finite thickness of the gage predominated over the negative error casued by the rigidity of the gage. The combined effect of thickness and rigidity was suhc as to increase the indicated strains of the different gages from 5 to 40 percent for a sheet thickness of 0.026 inch. Errors in indicated strain ranged from 0 to 9 percent for a sheet thickness of 0.125 inch.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper reports the effects of many thousands of pressure cycles on the performance characteristics of several types of strain gage pressure transducers. The results obtained indicate permanent changes in zero pressure output and sensitivity. Most of these changes tend to occur during the first few thousands of cycles. The equipment and procedures used to obtain the data are described.(Author).

Book The Bonded Electrical Resistance Strain Gage

Download or read book The Bonded Electrical Resistance Strain Gage written by William M. Murray and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1992-04-30 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental stress analysis is an important tool in the overall design and development of machinery and structures. While analytical techniques and computer solutions are available during the design stage, the results are still dependent on many assumptions that must be made in order to adapt them to the problems at hand. One popular method of finding structural and design weaknesses is through the use of the electrical resistance strain gage. These devices are relatively low in cost, easily applied by a reasonably skilled technician, and require little investment in instrumentation (for the general user), yet they yield a wealth of information in a relatively short time period. The information and its validity is, of course, dependent on the training and knowledge of the engineer who plans the tests and reduces the data. In addition to serving as a reference for engineers, this practical, instructive book has a high potential as a textbook for senior and first-year graduate students in engineering and related fields, such as engineering physics and geology. A solutions manual is available to instructors using the book as a text.
