Book Performance of Post Tensioned Clay Brick Masonry with Openings

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation aims to advance the understanding of unbonded post-tensioned masonry wall systems. Previous research has shown that unbonded post-tensioned masonry walls can adequately resist in-plane loading but their possible use in regions of high seismic activity has not been widely accepted. The research described in this dissertation focuses primarily on clay brick masonry. The first study is on the in-plane cyclic behavior of unbonded post-tensioned masonry walls with openings. Openings can interrupt the standard path of the compression strut. The compression strut is how unbonded post-tensioned masonry walls distribute the lateral load to the foundation, and without it the wall can become unstable. The results show that the size and location of the opening has a major effect of the overall response of the wall. As the opening size increases the compression strut becomes more unstable. Experimental studies involved the construction and testing of three walls. A parametric study was conducted to determine the effect of opening size and aspect ratio on the behavior of unbonded post-tensioned masonry walls with openings. Several tables are proposed for the initial design of these walls depending on the opening size and aspect ratio of the wall. The latter part of the dissertation focuses on the Direct Displacement-Based Design (DDBD) of unbonded post-tensioned clay brick masonry walls. A unique problem of the use of clay brick masonry walls arose and was studied. Because clay brick masonry and the concrete foundation's Young moduli are different, the interaction between the two surfaces was analyzed. It is shown that the foundation locally confines the clay brick masonry, thereby increasing its compressive strength. Without including this confinement, effect the lateral resisting strength is greatly underestimated. Previous methods are modified to predict the compressive strength of clay brick masonry at the wall/foundation interface. The method is verified a.

Book Behavior of Unbounded Post tensioned Masonry Walls

Download or read book Behavior of Unbounded Post tensioned Masonry Walls written by Reza Hassanli and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-07 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports on a comprehensive analytical, experimental and numerical study on the flexural response of post-tensioned masonry walls under in-plane loads. It explores an important mechanism in this new generation of structural walls, called “Self-centering”. This mechanism can reduce residual drifts and structural damage during earthquake ground motion, and is particularly favorable for structures which are designed for immediate occupancy performance levels. The book reports on the development and verification of a finite element model of post-tensioned masonry walls. It describes a detailed parametric study to predict the strength of post-tensioned masonry walls. New design methodologies and expressions are developed to predict the flexural strength and force-displacement response of post-tensioned masonry. Experimental study is carried out to better understand the behavior of post-tensioned masonry walls and also to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed design procedure and expressions. The book also includes an introduction to current research on unbounded post-tensioned masonry walls, together with an extensive analysis of previously published test results.

Book Post Tensioned Clay Brick Masonry Walls for Modular Housing in Seismic Regions

Download or read book Post Tensioned Clay Brick Masonry Walls for Modular Housing in Seismic Regions written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From past research post-tensioned concrete masonry walls have performed well due to in-plane loading, yet despite the advantage of being more aesthetically pleasing, post-tensioned clay brick masonry walls have not been investigated under this loading. Five half scale structural specimens using this system were constructed and tested, and the results from these tests plus a proposed force-displacement analysis procedure are included herein. The results show that post-tensioned clay brick masonry walls are well suited for seismic regions when the walls are grouted and unbonded, and the presence of confinement plates in the compression region greatly enhances the overall performance of the wall. In addition, the force-displacement analysis shows that in order to account for the overall behavior of the wall, cyclic degradation characteristics must be included.

Book Earthquake resistant Design Of Masonry Buildings

Download or read book Earthquake resistant Design Of Masonry Buildings written by Miha Tomazevic and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-07-05 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few decades, a considerable amount of experimental and analytical research on the seismic behaviour of masonry walls and buildings has been carried out. The investigations resulted in the development of methods for seismic analysis and design, as well as new technologies and construction systems. After many centuries of traditional use and decades of allowable stress design, clear concepts for limit state verification of masonry buildings under earthquake loading have recently been introduced in codes of practice.Although this book is not a review of the state-of-the-art of masonry structures in earthquake zones, an attempt has been made to balance the discussion on recent code requirements, state-of-the-art methods of earthquake-resistant design and the author's research work, in order to render the book useful for a broader application in design practice. An attempt has also been made to present, in a condensed but easy to understand way, all the information needed for earthquake-resistant design of masonry buildings constructed using traditional systems. The basic concepts of limit state verification are presented and equations for seismic resistance verification of masonry walls of all types of construction, (unreinforced, confined and reinforced) as well as masonry-infilled reinforced concrete frames, are addressed. A method for seismic resistance verification, compatible with recent code requirements, is also discussed. In all cases, experimental results are used to explain the proposed methods and equations. An important part of this book is dedicated to the discussion of the problems of repair, retrofit and rehabilitation of existing masonry buildings, including historical structures in urban centres. Methods of strengthening masonry walls as well as improving the structural integrity of existing buildings are described in detail. Wherever possible, experimental evidence regarding the effectiveness of the proposed strengthening methods is given.

Book Structural Masonry

Download or read book Structural Masonry written by Rots and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides a basis for a standardized approach to structural masonry, using an integration of experimental and computational techniques. Accurate displacement-controlled materials experiments have produced an extensive database of strength, stiffness and softening properties for tension, compression and shear, and this data has been transferred into numerical models for simulating the deformational behaviour of masonry structures. The models have been implemented into finite and distinct element codes and have subsequently been verified against shear wall experiments and analytical solutions for masonry parts.
