Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Regeneration of the Morgan Horse Of the three types of light horses which American breeders have developed during a century and a quarter, none stands higher in history, judged from the interest and affection which have been devoted to it, none has had a more direct and lasting influence on other types, none, in fact, has been more uniform in type, more prepotent in breeding, or more nearly a fixed breed than the Morgan horse. With an ancestry which must have been Of the highest merit, reared on the limestone and granite hills of New England, imbued with remarkable endurance and stamina by a rigorous but invigor ating climate, these little horses seventy-five years ago yielded to none in popularity and held first place in the actual money value placed on individuals and on the service fees of sires. Fifty years ago Morgan stallions were received in the Show rings of Kentucky with enthusiasm. Yet during the last twenty years the name of Morgan has been anathema among the horse breeders of Kentucky, the breed has been rarely seen in the show ring at state and national fairs, and the live-stock press and many horsemen of authority have declared the Morgan to be an extinct race. Book Through the Stable and Saddle Room

Download or read book Through the Stable and Saddle Room written by Arthur Thomas Fisher and published by Theclassics.Us. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1896 edition. Excerpt: ... stride of arab horses 321 body approaches the ground, by reason of the greater extension. It is marvellous what an amount of ground a horse can cover in his stride, and I have read in a very authentic work on Arab horses that, considering the size of such horses, their stride is well-nigh incredible. They appear to possess the power of throwing their hind-legs forward in advance of their fore-legs to a very peculiar extent. The writer made many experiments with horses of high caste and well-known speed. It is an old saying that 'a horse which is a good walker is equally good in all his paces, ' and such may be the case; but a sharp, quick walker is by no means always an equally fast galloper--indeed, I may go further, and assert that he is generally not so. Thoroughbred horses, especially those which have been raced, are proverbially slow walkers. It would not do, therefore, to discard a horse required for hunting purposes because he may happen to be a slow walker. If, however, he can gallop and walk well, so much the better, for it is an unspeakable advantage when a good hunter can walk well. The galloping action of horses which are rapid walkers is very frequently over-high. I do not, however, wish the reader to infer that I am an advocate for a slow, slovenly walker. A really well-made horse will move well at every pace, whether it be a walk, trot, or gallop. Since horses are required for various purposes, such as hunting, ordinary riding, and driving, it will be advisable to enlarge somewhat on those points which are of primary importance for the efficient performance of those several duties. We may very reasonably assume that, since greater power and activity are demanded in the hunting-field than on the road, the selection of a..
