Book excerpt: Cross-layer design and optimization is a new technique which can be used to design and improve the performance in both wireless and wire line networks. The central idea of cross-layer design is to optimize the control and exchange of information over two or more layers to achieve significant performance improvements by exploiting the interactions between various protocol layers. In this thesis, a cross-layer design and optimization framework was proposed and the concept of using the optimization agent to provide the exchange and control of information between the protocol layers was also introduced. The approach for this thesis is to investigate the effects of the wireless channel and the performance of a small scale wireless sensor network (WSN) to develop insights that can be used in the design and development of the optimization agent in the proposed cross-layer framework. A tap delay line (TDL) model was developed and simulated in MATLAB to investigate the effects of the wireless channel impairments due to mobility and multipath fading. Performance measurements were also conducted to study the effects of interference and transmission range for a group of networked wireless sensors.

Book excerpt: Information flow in a telecommunication network is accomplished through the interaction of mechanisms at various design layers with the end goal of supporting the information exchange needs of the applications. In wireless networks in particular, the different layers interact in a nontrivial manner in order to support information transfer. In this text we will present abstract models that capture the cross-layer interaction from the physical to transport layer in wireless network architectures including cellular, ad-hoc and sensor networks as well as hybrid wireless-wireline. The model allows for arbitrary network topologies as well as traffic forwarding modes, including datagrams and virtual circuits. Furthermore the time varying nature of a wireless network, due either to fading channels or to changing connectivity due to mobility, is adequately captured in our model to allow for state dependent network control policies. Quantitative performance measures that capture the quality of service requirements in these systems depending on the supported applications are discussed, including throughput maximization, energy consumption minimization, rate utility function maximization as well as general performance functionals. Cross-layer control algorithms with optimal or suboptimal performance with respect to the above measures are presented and analyzed. A detailed exposition of the related analysis and design techniques is provided.

We propose a cross-layer, reliable wireless sensor protocol design. The protocol benefits from the body of research in the two areas of wireless sensors reliability research and wireless sensors energy conservation research. The protocol introduces a new energy saving technique that considers reliability as a design parameter and constraint. The protocol also introduces a new back-off algorithm that dynamically adjusts to the data messages reliability needs. Other cross-layer techniques that the protocol introduces are dynamic MAC retry limit and dynamic transmission power setting that is also based on the messages reliability requirements. Cross layer design is defined as the interaction between the different stack layers with the goal of improving performance. It has been used in ad hoc wireless systems to improve throughput, latency, and quality of service (QoS). The improvements gained in performance come at a price. This includes decreased architecture modularity and designs may be hard to debug, maintain or upgrade. Cross-layer design is valuable for wireless sensor networks due to the severe resource constraints. The proposed protocol uses cross-layer design as a performance and energy optimization technique. Nevertheless, the protocol avoids introducing layer interdependencies by preserving the stack architecture and optimizes the overall system energy and reliability performance by information sharing. The information is embedded as flags in the data and control messages that are moving through the stack. Each layer reads these flags and adjusts its performance and handling of the message accordingly. The performance of the proposed protocol is evaluated using simulation modeling. The reference protocol used for evaluation is APTEEN. We developed simulation programs for the proposed protocol and for APTEEN protocol using the JiST/SWANS simulation tool. The performance evaluation results show that the proposed protocol achieves better energy performance than the reference protocol. Several scalability experiments show that the proposed protocol scales well and has better performance for large networks. Also, exhaustive bandwidth utilization experiments show that for heavily-utilized or congested networks, the proposed protocol has high reliability in delivering messages classified as important.

Our approach combines medium access organization with routing. in a cross-layer simulation platform, the state-of-the- art layered and cross-layer protocols have been implemented along with XLP for performance evaluations. XLP significantly improves the communication performance and outperforms the traditional layered protocol architectures in terms of both network performance and implementation complexity.

This dissertation will focus on the cross-layer issues and approaches. It will also discuss the latency-aware and energy efficiency tradeoffs and the packets transmission in the rear part of the dissertation. Firstly, we will analyze the cross-layer design for wireless sensor networks based on the virtual MIMO techniques. We will coordinate the physical layer, the MAC layer and the network layer for cross-layer evaluation. Performance analysis and simulation results show that throughput and packet loss ratio will have different performances compared with only considering the MIMO scheme in the physical layer as the increase of the number of transmitters. Secondly, we will discuss the bottom-up optimization for cross-layer design. We used the fuzzy logic system (FLS) to coordinate the physical layer, the data-link layer and the application layer for cross-layer design. Simulation results show that the cross-layer design can reduce the average delay, increase the throughput and extend the network lifetime. The network performance parameters could also keep stability after the cross-layer optimization. Thirdly, we extended the FLS application in cross-layer design from Type-1 to Type-2. We demonstrated that type-2 fuzzy membership function (MF), i.e., the Gaussian MFs with uncertain variance is most appropriate to model BER and MAC layer service time. We used the forecasted transmission delay to adjust the transmission power, and it showed that the interval type-2 FLS performed much better than a type-1 FLS, and FLSs performed better than back-prop NN in terms of energy consumption, average delay and throughput. Also, we obtained the performance bound based on the actual transmission delay. Finally, we applied a image as the real service in WSNs. We considered cross-layer design for image transmission in WSNs. We combined the application layer, the MAC layer and the physical layer together. According to analysis and simulation, there were tradeoffs between QoS and energy consumption for both high priority service and low priority service. Application level QoS was applied to evaluate the cross-layer design for WSNs. Two other works were discussed in this dissertation. One is the latency-aware and energy efficiency tradeoffs for wireless sensor networks. Latency and energy efficiency are two important parameters to evaluate the WSNs. The FLS is applied to the nodes selection. In contrast with the cases that only consider one descriptor, the FLS application can manage the delay/energy tradeoffs to meet the network performance requirements. Another work discussed is "Packets Transmission in wireless sensor networks: interference, energy and delay-aware approach". In the WSN, the interference will affect the packets transmission. We proposed FLS in the optimization of SIR threshold selection. Average delay and distance of a node to the source node are selected as antecedents for the FLS. The output of FLS provided adjusting factors for the SIR threshold. Simulation results showed the fuzzy optimization could achieve a better network efficiency, reduce the average delay and extend the network lifetime.

Demanding the need for content based routing techniques and development of low cost network modules, built to operate in large numbers in a networked fashion with limited resources and capabilities. The unique characteristics of wireless sensor network's have questioned the applicability and effectiveness of conventional algorithms defined for wireless ad-hoc networks, leading to the design and development of protocols specific to wireless sensor network. Many network layer protocols have been proposed for wireless sensor networks, identifying and addressing factors influencing network layer design, this thesis defines a cross layer routing protocol (XLRP) for wireless sensor networks. The submitted work is suggestive of a network layer design with knowledge of application layer information and efficient utilization of physical layer capabilities onboard the sensor modules. Network layer decisions are made based on the quantity of information (size of the data) that needs to be routed and accordingly transmitter power levels are switched as an energy efficient routing strategy. The proposed routing protocol switches radio states based on the received signal strength (RSSI) acquiring only relevant information and piggybacks information in data packets for reduced controlled information exchange. The proposed algorithm has been implemented in Network Simulator (NS2) and the effectiveness of the protocol has been proved in comparison with diffusion paradigm.
