Book excerpt: An error probability analysis is performed for a conventional noncoherent M-ary orthogonal frequency-shift keying (MFSK) receiver employing fast frequency-hopped (FFH) spread spectrum waveforms transmitted over a frequency-nonselective, slowly fading Ricean channel with partial-band noise interference. Each diversity reception is assumed to fade independently. The partial-band interference is modeled as a Gaussian process. The effects of wideband thermal noise are also included. The energy per hop is held constant; thus, as diversity increases, energy per symbol increases. Previous analyses considered only constant energy per symbol systems, however, practical military systems are likely to employ fixed hop rates. There is some performance enhancement to be obtained from implementing diversity in a conventional FFH/MFSK system with fixed hop rates, but partial band interference still results in significant degradation. Additionally, the performance of this FFH receiver is investigated over the same channel in the presence of partial-band tone jamming without diversity for the case of binary frequency-shift keying (BFSK) when both the signal and the jammer can fade independently. Performance when only a single jamming tone per hop slot is allowed is compared to that obtained when two jamming tones per hop slot are possible. When the jamming signal experiences Rayleigh fading there is very little degradation of the jammer's effectiveness as compared to when the jamming signal is not affected by fading.

Book excerpt: An error probability analysis is performed for a fast frequency- hopped, frequency-shift keyed noncoherent receiver with ratio-statistic combining for a Rician channel with partial-band interference. Results are obtained for binary and M-ary FSK receivers where M is 4, 8, or 16. Both envelope and square-law detectors were analyzed. The probability of bit error is examined for different levels of diversity, thermal noise, severity of fading, fractions of bandwidth jammed, and varying jamming power. Comparisons for the different parameters are done to determine when diversity should be used. For the special case when there is no diversity, an analytic expression for receiver performance is obtained, and the performance of a receiver using envelope detection is found to be identical to that of a receiver using square-law detection for this special case. The results show that, for diversities of three and four, the envelope detector performs better than the square-law detector. It is shown that, for low signal-to-jammer ratios, diversity is generally a disadvantage, and for high signal-to-jammer ratios, diversity is generally an advantage. A procedure referred to as noise-normalization combining is employed by the system receiver to minimize partial-band interference effects. Each hop is assumed to fade independently. The partial- band interference is modeled as a Gaussian process. Both the signal and the partial-band interference are assumed to be affected by the fading channel which is modeled as Rician. The effect of fading of the partial-band interference on worst-case receiver performance is relatively minor. When there is no signal fading or when the signal fading is Rician, then the counter-intuitive result of poorer receiver performance when the partial-band interference experiences fading is obtained. This effect is most pronounced when the signal does not fade and the partial-band interference experiences Rayleigh fading. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 39 (thesis year 1994) a total of 13,953 thesis titles from 21 Canadian and 159 United States universities. The system uses fast frequency hopping to provide diversity and assumes independent channels for each hop when the signal is recombined. The effects of fading channels are investigated for both Rayleigh and Rician fading channel descriptions. Probability of bit error for the uncoded performance is plotted for various signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) and different levels of diversity versus worst-case partial-band jamming. Analysis for Forward Error Correction coding is included for rate 1/2 and 1/3 convolutional codes and (n, k) Reed-Solomon Block codes. Probability of bit error is plotted for each code with various signal-to-noise ratios and diversity levels 1 to 4 versus worst-case partial-band jamming.

Since finding closed form expressions for the most general case of Ricean fading proved difficult, performance was evaluated for special cases of fading. The analysis assumed fixed jamming power and considered two general jamming strategies: jamming a fixed number of frequency-hop slots, and jamming a variable number depending on signal energy per hop. It was found that the degree of fading of the jamming tones had little effect on system performance. It was also found that the most effective jamming strategy depended on the degree of fading of the information signal and on the signal-to-thermal noise power ratio per hop. In general, two- fold diversity yields improved performance with respect to no diversity. When the information signal is Rayleigh faded and the signal power is greater than about 1% of total jamming power, higher diversities perform better than lower diversities. When the signal is Ricean faded, the effect of higher diversities depends on the signal power per hop-to-thermal noise power ratio, the degree of signal fading and on the ratio of signal power-to-total jamming power.

Book excerpt: This thesis investigates the performance degradation resulting from multitone interference of orthogonal, noncoherent, frequency-hopped, M-ary frequency-shift keyed receivers (FH/MFSK) where the effect of thermal and other wideband noise is not neglected. The multiple, equal power jamming tones are assumed to correspond to some or all of the possible FH M-ary orthogonal signaling tones. Furthermore, the channel is modeled as a Ricean fading channel, a possibility precluded when thermal noise is neglected. Both the signaling tones and the multiple interference tones are assumed to be affected by channel fading. Both band and independent band multitone interference are considered. Performance is evaluated by obtaining a union bound on the probability of bit error, and receiver performance is compared with exact results for band multitone interference of a noncoherent FH/MFSK receiver under comparable circumstances. Except for the case of Rayleigh fading of the signal, the union bound is very tight for those cases that can be compared with exact results. The advantages of the union bound approach are twofold. First, the union bound approach yields a solution that is far less computationally intensive than that obtained with the exact approach. Second, the union bound approach allows numerical results to be obtained for interference conditions that are not amenable to exact analysis, such as independent multitone interference of FH/ MFSK.
