Book Optimization of Multiclass Queueing Networks with Changeover Times Via the Achievable Region Method

Download or read book Optimization of Multiclass Queueing Networks with Changeover Times Via the Achievable Region Method written by Dimitris Bertsimas and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We address the problem of scheduling a multi-station multiclass queueing network (MQNET) with server changeover times to minimize steady-state mean job holding costs. We present new lower bounds on the best achievable cost that emerge as the values of mathematical programming problems (linear, semidefinite, and convex) over relaxed formulations of the system's achievable performance region. The constraints on achievable performance defining these formulations are obtained by formulating system's equilibrium relations. Our contributions include: (1) a flow conservation interpretation and closed formulae for the constraints previously derived by the potential function method; (2) new work decomposition laws for MQNETs; (3) new constraints (linear, convex, and semidefinite) on the performance region of first and second moments of queue lengths for MQNETs; (4) a fast bound for a MQNET with N customer classes computed in N steps; (5) two heuristic scheduling policies: a priority-index policy, and a policy extracted from the solution of a linear programming relaxation.

This book was released on 2002 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical communications networks are becoming increasingly important as there is demand for high capacity links. Dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) is widely deployed at the core networks to accommodate high capacity transport systems. Optical components such as optical amplifiers, tunable filters, transceivers, termination devices and add-drop multiplexers are becoming more reliable and affordable. Access and metropolitan area networks are increasingly built with optical technologies to overcome the electronic bottleneck at network edges. New components and subsystems for very high speed optical networks offer new design options. The proceedings of the First International Conference on Optical Communications and Networks present high quality recent research results in the areas of optical communications, network components, architectures, protocols, planning, design, management and operation.

Book excerpt: This handbook aims to highlight fundamental, methodological and computational aspects of networks of queues to provide insights and to unify results that can be applied in a more general manner. The handbook is organized into five parts: Part 1 considers exact analytical results such as of product form type. Topics include characterization of product forms by physical balance concepts and simple traffic flow equations, classes of service and queue disciplines that allow a product form, a unified description of product forms for discrete time queueing networks, insights for insensitivity, and aggregation and decomposition results that allow sub networks to be aggregated into single nodes to reduce computational burden. Part 2 looks at monotonicity and comparison results such as for computational simplification by either of two approaches: stochastic monotonicity and ordering results based on the ordering of the process generators, and comparison results and explicit error bounds based on an underlying Markov reward structure leading to ordering of expectations of performance measures. Part 3 presents diffusion and fluid results. It specifically looks at the fluid regime and the diffusion regime. Both of these are illustrated through fluid limits for the analysis of system stability, diffusion approximations for multi-server systems, and a system fed by Gaussian traffic. Part 4 illustrates computational and approximate results through the classical MVA (mean value analysis) and QNA (queueing network analyzer) for computing mean and variance of performance measures such as queue lengths and sojourn times; numerical approximation of response time distributions; and approximate decomposition results for large open queueing networks. spanPart 5 enlightens selected applications as spanloss networks originating from circuit switched telecommunications applications, capacity sharing originating from packet switching in data networks, and a hospital application that is of growing present day interest. spanThe book shows that spanthe intertwined progress of theory and practicespan will remain to be most intriguing and will continue to be the basis of further developments in queueing networks.

Book Rapid Modelling for Increasing Competitiveness

Download or read book Rapid Modelling for Increasing Competitiveness written by Gerald Reiner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-06-13 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Perspective on Two Decades of Rapid Modeling It is an honor for me to be asked to write a foreword to the Proceedings of the 1st Rapid Modeling Conference. In 1987, when I coined the term “Rapid Modeling” to denote queuing modeling of manufacturing systems, I never imagined that two decades later there would be an international conference devoted to this topic! I am delighted to see that there will be around 40 presentations at the conference by leading researchers from aroundthe world, and about half of these presentationsare represented by written papers published in this book. I congratulate the conference organizers and program committee on the success of their efforts to hold the ?rst ever conference on Rapid Modeling. Attendees at this conferencemight?nd it interesting to learn about the history of the term Rapid Modeling in the context it is used here. During the fall of 1986 I was invited to a meeting at the Headquarters of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) in Dearborn, Michigan. By that time I had successfully demonstrated s- eral industry applications of queuing network models at leading manufacturers in the USA. Although in principle the use of queuing networks to model manufact- ing systems was well known in the OR/MS community and many papers had been published, the actual use of suchmodelsby manufacturingprofessionalswas almost nonexistent.

Book NETWORKING 2002 Networking Technologies Services and Protocols Performance of Computer and Communication Networks Mobile and Wireless Communications

Download or read book NETWORKING 2002 Networking Technologies Services and Protocols Performance of Computer and Communication Networks Mobile and Wireless Communications written by Enrico Gregori and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-06-30 with total page 1281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Second IFIP-TC6 Netw- king Conference, Networking 2002. Networking 2002 was sponsored bythe IFIP Working Groups 6.2, 6.3, and 6.8. For this reason the conference was structured into three tracks: i) Networking Technologies, Services, and Protocols, ii) Perf- mance of Computer and Communication Networks, and iii) Mobile and Wireless Communications. This year the conference received 314 submissions coming from 42 countries from all ?ve continents Africa (4), Asia (84), America (63), Europe (158), and Oc- nia (5). This represents a 50% increase in submissions over the ?rst conference, thus indicating that Networking is becoming a reference conference for wor- wide researchers in the networking community. With so manypapers to choose from, the job of the Technical Program C- mittee, to provide a conference program of the highest technical excellence, was both challenging and time consuming. From the 314 submissions, we ?nallys- ected 82 full papers for presentation during the conference technical sessions. To give young researchers and researchers from emerging countries the oppor- nityto present their work and to receive useful feedback from participants, we decided to include two poster sessions during the technical program. Thirty-one short papers were selected for presentation during the poster sessions. The conference technical program was split into three days, and included, in addition to the 82 refereed contributions, 5 invited papers from top-level rese- chers in the networking community.
