Book Fire Protection Engineering Applications for Large Transportation Systems in China

Download or read book Fire Protection Engineering Applications for Large Transportation Systems in China written by Fang Li and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-11 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid development of China’s transportation system brings huge challenges to fire safety issues. Fire Protection Engineering Applications for Large Transportation Systems in Chinaanalyzes key fire issues for large transportation systems in rail, airport, tunnels, etc. and offers solutions and best practices for similar projects throughout the world. The first monograph to look at transportation hub fire issues in China looks at architecture features, occupancy and area classification, fire hazard and design difficulties based on local code design. The book then provides case studies to identity the common problems and introduces possible solutions in order to develop a best practice for future design and improvement. The authors worked directly on the case studies provided, which include the Hongqiao airport transportation hub, Beijing and Pudoing airport PBD study, subways in different cities and the high speed train system Cross China. They use their research and investigation to form the theoretical basis for the fire design of urban large transportation hubs and the establishment of corresponding fire codes. The cutting-edge technologies discussed include: Smoke control strategy in complicated multiple function space, assistant evacuation performance based study new technology on fire separation new fire products for smoke detection and intelligent guiding system for evacuation BIM and internet of things used to improve fire management

Book Research and Advanced Technology for Digital Libraries

Download or read book Research and Advanced Technology for Digital Libraries written by Traugott Koch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-02-26 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to ECDL 2003 and to these conference proceedings, featuring all the papers presented at the 7th European Conference on Research and Advanced Technology for Digital Libraries. Following Pisa (1997), Heraklion (1998), Paris (1999), Lisbon (2000), Da- stadt (2001) and Rome (2002), ECDL 2003 in Trondheim reaches some of the northernmost shores of the continent. Being the seventh in an annual series of conferences represents, for better and for worse, a considerable tradition in the fast changing world of digit- library-related research and development. It is still a di?cult and slow job to change traditional forms and formats of communication at – and related to – scienti?c conferences, and also to change participants’ expectations. Yet each new conference builds upon the topics and communities involved in previous events and inherits the commitment to quality established by its predecessors. Each year, ECDL has to live up to its role of being “the major European forum focusing on digital libraries and associated technical, practical, and social issues,”bringingdiversedisciplinesandapplicationcommunitiestogether. There arestillchallengesinthisrespectaheadofus, butthequalityandrangeofpapers and other contributions, combined with opportunities for debate, should ensure that ECDL 2003 sets high standards for the future.

Book Managing civil tax investigations

Download or read book Managing civil tax investigations written by Great Britain: National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010-12-17 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HMRC's civil investigations directorates, which examine serious cases of suspected tax evasion, have generated increasing returns from their work, while reducing resources. This report recognises this improvement in performance but underlines the scope for them to achieve more. Since 2007-08 the directorates have increased the additional tax generated ('yield') from their work by 49 per cent in real terms to £8.5 billion, while reducing their expenditure by 10 per cent in real terms, to £567 million. They have also delivered a range of other activities to prevent future tax losses and improve taxpayer compliance. Yield provides a firm measure of the value of investigation work. But used alone it does not capture the full impact of investigations, such as the effect on taxpayer behaviour; nor does it encourage preventative work to improve compliance. The Department is planning a broader range of metrics to assess the impact of its enforcement activities. While the Department is making progress in understanding its performance and managing its enforcement resources, it does not have all the management information necessary on the cost-effectiveness of its different types of enforcement activity and their wider impact. Among the NAO's recommendations are that the system for referring cases for investigation be improved; that the time taken to complete investigations be reduced; that a clearer picture be developed of the penalties imposed on those found to have evaded or defrauded tax; and that it be made easier to trace whether tax debts from completed investigations have been paid in full.
