Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Engineering - Computer Engineering, grade: 3.71, Cyprus International University, language: English, abstract: In this thesis, three Wireless Sensor Networks – Ad-hoc On-Demand Distance Vector, Dynamic Source routing protocol and Optimized Link State routing protocol have been simulated and compared in typical IoT scenarios. Their performance was evaluated using three performance metrics and then they were compared; the performance metrics are Routing Overhead, Average End to End Delay and Throughput. Different number of nodes with different percentages of mobile nodes were analyzed. Specifically, number of nodes analyzed were 20, 40, 60 and 70 with the number of mobile nodes 10, 15 and 20 using OPNET while with NS 3 20, 60 and 100 nodes were analyzed. For each of the number of nodes, all the number of mobile nodes were evaluated. The routing protocols were analyzed using the OPNET Simulation Software and NS-3and the environment size for the simulation was 1000m by 1000m. IoT has continue to grow bigger since from its inception. Many mobile devices are now available, the internet and its application have only grown bigger and better. As IoT is continually growing, so also is the complexity, as a result issues pertaining routing have also increased. Many researches have been made in attempt to proffer solutions that will either minimize or eliminate these routing issues. Different routing protocols have been designed with different specifications for different applications of the IoT. Also, attempts have been made to implement routing protocols of other types of networks in the IoT.

Book excerpt: The ability to sense and monitor a variety of environmental conditions using un-tethered sensors offers a significant change over traditional sensing systems that need to be strategically positioned and have topologies engineered. As such, recent research into wireless sensor networks has attracted great interest due to its diversity of applications, ranging in areas such as home, health, environmental and military applications. In this thesis, the evaluation of a routing protocol developed by Crossbow Technologies called XMesh, is presented. The main components of the routing protocol are described and the routing algorithm explained. Experiments were conducted to determine the connectivity ranges of motes in different transmission power settings. The relationship of mote transmission power and network connectivity is presented. An energy efficiency study looked at the means of extending the lifespan of the network. Although, packet losses during the period of a node failure were significant, the routing protocol showed that it was able to adapt and reorganize to provide reliable and stable routing in a network.

The networking capability enables these sensor nodes to incorporate, collaborates, and coordinates with among each other , and this is a fundamental shift in the field of networks which differentiates sensor network nodes form other networks such as IP-datagram, Ad-Hoc and so on. Currently, routing in the wireless sensor network faces multiple challenges, such as new scalability, coverage, packet loss, interference, real-time audio and video real time streaming, harsh weather environments, energy constraints and so forth. Network routing can be called an amalgamation of routing protocol and routing algorithm. The job of the routing protocols is to provide a cohesive view of network nodes topology while routing algorithm provides the intelligence in terms of optimal path calculation. We set out to conduct a detailed study of routing protocols in a IP-datagram, wireless ad-hoc and sensor network, and also accomplished routing protocols comparison against the chosen network performance factor dropped packet ratio. Routing protocols play an important role in modern wireless communication networks. Routing protocols’ performance can be measured by a number of factors such as packet dropped rate and so forth. Rumour and Optimal Spinal Routing algorithms are compared using ShoX simulation and the results and analysis are based upon the simulation experiments.

ScatterDHT exploits the P2P functionality features and applies them over the ScatterWeb sensor nodes. The first part of this book describes the ScatterDHT overlay routing and figures out the performance evaluation of the implemented prototype. The second part gives a detailed study of performance evaluation of two MANETs proactive routing protocols (B.A.T.M.A.N and OLSR) over the WSN. This work has been achieved to give a comprehensive performance evaluation on the characteristics of the chosen routing protocols. Results show that ScatterDHT outperforms the other protocols considering a few important metrics in the wireless sensor network. It has a higher delivery ratio than B.A.T.M.A.N and OLSR for all network sizes (5 Nodes, 10 Nodes, 50 Nodes, 100 Nodes, 200 Nodes). It also outperforms the other protocols regarding the metric Control Traffic Overhead. The most important metric where Scatter-DHT outperforms other ones, is the energy consumption. Since the control traffic overhead generated by ScatterDHT is less than others, it is obvious that it requires less energy consumption.

Book excerpt: Nowadays, Opportunistic Routing (OR) is widely considered to be the most important paradigm for Multi-hop wireless networks (MWNs). It exploits the broadcast nature of wireless medium to propagate information from one point to another within the network. In OR scheme, when a node has new information to share, it rst needs to set its forwarding list which include the IDs and/or any relevant information to its best suited neighboring nodes. This operation is supported by the use of appropriate metrics. Then, it executes a coordination algorithm allowing transmission reliability and high throughput among the next-hop forwarders. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive guide to understand the characteristics and challenges faced in the area of opportunistic routing protocols in MWNs. Moreover, since the planet we live on is largely covered by water, OR protocols have gained much attention during the last decade in real-time aquatic applications, such as oil/chemical spill monitoring, ocean resource management, anti-submarine missions and so on. One of the major problems in Underwater Wireless Sensor Network (UWSNs) is determining an e cient and reliable routing methodology between the source node and the destination node. Therefore, designing e cient and robust routing protocols for UWSNs became an attractive topic for researchers. This paper seeks to address in detail the key factors of underwater sensor network. Furthermore, it calls into question 5 state-of-the-art routing protocols proposed for UWSN: The Depth-Based Routing protocol (DBR), the Energy-E cient Depth-Based Routing protocol (EEDBR), the Hydraulic-pressure-based anycast routing protocol (Hydrocast), the Geographic and opportunistic routing protocol with Depth Adjustment for mobile underwater sensor networks (GEDAR), and the Void- Aware Pressure Routing for underwater sensor networks (VAPR). Finally, it covers the performance of those protocol through the use of the R programming language.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, we propose a suite of Evolutionary Algorithms (EA)-based protocols to solve the problems of clustering and routing in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). At the beginning, the problem of the Cluster Heads (CHs) selection in WSNs is formulated as a single-objective optimization problem. A centralized weighted-sum multi-objective optimization protocol is proposed to find the optimal set of CHs. The proposed protocol finds a predetermined number of CHs in such way that they form one-hop clusters. The goal of the proposed protocol is to enhance the network's energy efficiency, data delivery reliability and the protocol's scalability. The formulated problem has been solved using three evolutionary approaches: Genetic Algorithms (GA), Differential Evolution (DE) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and we assessed each of their performance. Then, a PSO-based hierarchical clustering protocol that forms two-hop clusters is proposed to investigate the effect of the number of CHs on network's energy efficiency. This protocol enhances the WSN's energy efficiency by setting an upper bound on the number of CHs and trying to minimize the number of CHs compared to that upper bound. It also maximizes the protocol's scalability by using two-hop communication between the sensor nodes and their respective CHs. Then, a centralized weighted-sum PSO-based protocol is proposed for finding the optimal inter-cluster routing tree that connects the CHs to the Base Station (BS). This protocol is appropriate when the CHs are predetermined in advance. The proposed protocol uses a particle encoding scheme and defines an objective function to find the optimal routing tree. The objective function is used to build the trade-off between the energy-efficiency and data delivery reliability of the constructed tree. Finally, a centralized multi-objective Pareto-optimization approach is adapted to find the optimal network configuration that includes both the optimal set of CHs and the optimal routing tree. A new individual encoding scheme that represents a joint solution for both the clustering and routing problems in WSNs is proposed. The proposed protocol uses a variable number of CHs, and its objective is to assign each network node to its respective CH and each CH to its respective next hop. The joint problem of clustering and routing in WSNs is formulated as a multi-objective minimization problem with a variable number of CHs, aiming at determining an energy efficient, reliable (in terms of data delivery) and scalable clustering and routing scheme. The formulated problem has been solved using two state-of-the-art Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms (MOEA), and their performance has been compared. The proposed protocols were developed under realistic network settings. No assumptions were made about the nodes' location awareness or transmission range capabilities. The proposed protocols were tested using a realistic energy consumption model that is based on the characteristics of the Chipcon CC2420 radio transceiver data sheet. Extensive simulations on 50 homogeneous and heterogeneous WSN models were evaluated and compared against well-known cluster-based sensor network protocols.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is a promising technology that has a large spectrum of applications such as, battlefield reconnaissance, border protection and security surveillance, preparing forecasts, severe environment detection, volcano monitoring, disaster management. WSNs operate unattended in harsh environments with limited energy supplies that can’t be practically changed or recharged. Thus energy efficiency is a critical design issue which must be addressed. Clustering plays an effective role in judicious use of dwindling energy resources of the deployed sensor nodes. Nodes are grouped into clusters and a specific designated node, called the cluster head is responsible for collecting data from the nodes in its cluster, aggregating them and sending to the BS, where data can be retrieved later. Besides energy efficiency, clustering has many other advantages like reduced routing overhead, conservation of communication bandwidth, stabilized network topology, network stability etc In this research, we study the energy efficiency of two clustering algorithms, S-Web and LEACH and compare them for network lifetime. Simulation results show that the S-Web clustering mechanism achieves a noticeable improvement in the network lifetime.
