Book Recycled Materials and by Products in Highway Applications

Download or read book Recycled Materials and by Products in Highway Applications written by Mary Stroup-Gardiner and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2013 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recycled materials and industrial byproducts are being used in transportation applications with increasing frequency. There is a growing body of experience showing that these materials work well in highway applications. This study gathers the experiences of transportation agencies in determining the relevant properties of recycled materials and industrial byproducts and the beneficial use for highway applications. Information for this study was acquired through a literature review, and surveys and interviews with state department of transportation staff. The report will serve as a guide to states revising the provisions of their materials specifications to incorporate the use of recycled materials and industrial byproducts, and should, thereby, assist producers and users in leveling the playing field for a wide range of dissimilar materials.

Book Evaluating the Effects of Recycling Agents on Asphalt Mixtures with High RAS and RAP Binder Ratios

Download or read book Evaluating the Effects of Recycling Agents on Asphalt Mixtures with High RAS and RAP Binder Ratios written by Amy Epps Martin and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "More than 90 percent of highways and roads in the United States are built using hot-mix asphalt (HMA) or warm-mix asphalt (WMA) mixtures, and these mixtures now recycle more than 99 percent of some 76.2 million tons of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and about 1 million tons of recycled asphalt shingles (RAS) each year. Cost savings in 2017 totaled approximately $2.2 billion with these recycled materials replacing virgin materials. The TRB National Cooperative Highway Research Program's NCHRP Research Report 927: Evaluating the Effects of Recycling Agents on Asphalt Mixtures with High RAS and RAP Binder Ratios presents an evaluation of how commercially available recycling agents affect the performance of asphalt mixtures incorporating RAP and RAS at high recycled binder ratios."--

Book Feasibility of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement as Aggregate in Portland Cement Concrete

Download or read book Feasibility of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement as Aggregate in Portland Cement Concrete written by Michael Berry and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research effort was focused on evaluating the feasibility of using minimally processed reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) as aggregate replacement in concrete pavements. This research demonstrated that concretes with up to 50 percent of the fine aggregates and 100 percent of the coarse aggregates replaced with RAP were suitable for concrete pavement. A statistical experimental design procedure (response surface methodology - RSM) was used to investigate proportioning RAP concrete mixtures to achieve desired performance criteria. Based on the results of the RSM investigation, two concrete mixtures were selected for further evaluation: a high RAP mix with fine and coarse aggregate replacement rates of 50 and 100 percent respectively, and a "high" strength mix with one half of the RAP used in the high RAP mix. Both mixes met MDT concrete pavement specifications for slump (1.5 inches), air content (6 percent), and 28-day compressive and tensile strengths (3,000 psi and 500 psi, respectively). These two concrete mixtures were subjected to a suite of mechanical and durability tests to evaluate their potential use in Montana roadways. Mechanical properties tested were compressive and tensile strength, elastic modulus, shrinkage, and creep. Durability tests included alkali-silica reactivity, absorption, abrasion, chloride permeability, freeze-thaw resistance, and scaling. Overall, both mixes performed adequately in these mechanical and durability tests, although it is important to note that the inclusion of RAP had an obvious negative impact on nearly every property tested relative to those of control mixes made with 100 percent conventional aggregates.

Book Cold recycled Bituminous Concrete Using Bituminous Materials

Download or read book Cold recycled Bituminous Concrete Using Bituminous Materials written by Jon A. Epps and published by Transportation Research Board National Research. This book was released on 1990 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to pavement designers, construction engineers, and others interested in economical methods for reconstructing or rehabilitating bituminous pavements. Information is provided on the processes and procedures used by a number of states to recycle asphalt pavements in place without application of heat. Since 1975 a growing number of state highway agencies have reconstructed or rehabilitated asphalt pavements by recycling the old pavement in place. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the processes used for cold in-place recycling, including construction procedures, mix designs, mixture properties, performance, and specifications.

Book Recycling Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement

Download or read book Recycling Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement written by James H. Tanski and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After completing a study of milling and planning flexible pavement, the next logical step was to find a use for the surplus reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). Recycling RAP is a concept that has garnered significant interest periodically since about 1915, whenever petroleum shortages threatened. In the mid-1970s it again became timely. From 1976 through 1983, three recycling experiments were performed on rural state highways. They were 1) a 100-percent recycled, synthetically rejuvenated top course, 2) a top course recycled untreated as a shoulder base course, and 3) an asphalt-cement rejuvenated top-course material recycled as a 35/65 base course (35-percent recycled, 65-percent virgin material), a 35/65 top course, and a 50/50 top course. In the first two experiments on-site top courses were milled, stockpiled (short-term) and later recycled, and the third material from existing stockpiles was recycled after long-term shortage.
