Book Development of High temperature Strain Gages

Download or read book Development of High temperature Strain Gages written by J. W. Pitts and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A summary is presented of a research program aimed at the improvement of high-temperature strain gages of the electrical resistance type. Potential ceramic and metal components were evaluated and a gage was devised that was based on these evaluations. This gage (NBS 5B) was flexible and easy to install; however, it lacked resistance stability at higher temperatures. In an attempt to minimize this deficiency, ceramic cements were developed that showed greater electrical resistivity than had been previously observed in the range 800 to 1800 degrees Fahrenheit; also, a technique was devised for increasing the resistance to ground by applying a fired-on ceramic coating to the grid of a specifically developed unbacked gage. A study was made of the cause of the erratic response of cemented gages that had not been preheated prior to use. There were strong indications that the erratic response was caused mostly by the rapid decrease in resistance that accompanied structural changes in the cement.

Book Strain gauge Balance Performance and Internal Temperature Gradients

Download or read book Strain gauge Balance Performance and Internal Temperature Gradients written by R. D. Law and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests are described in which strain gauged and a simple axisymmetric dummy balance were subjected to temperature gradients. An external body of revolution was fitted over each to provide shielding from gas flows of 16 m/s at temperatures between ambient and 90 K. Convection around the balances could be controlled, and by extending the body of revolution the direction of temperature gradients was changed. A simple beam analysis is used to demonstrate that thermally induced axial force readings from the balance can be predicted from temperatures measured at the flexure roots. An axial force calibration was carried out on the at ambient and cryogenic temperatures to quantify sensitivity changes. To measure changes in interactions at low temperatures pitching moment or normal force were also applied simultaneously with axial force. Cryogenic, Wind tunnels, ETW, Cryogenic balances.
