Book Innovative Bridge Structures Based on Ultra High Performance Concrete UHPC

Download or read book Innovative Bridge Structures Based on Ultra High Performance Concrete UHPC written by Xudong Shao and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2024-01-18 with total page 976 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Innovative Bridge Structures Based on Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC): Theory, Experiments and Applications introduces more than a dozen innovative bridge structures and engineering applications developed by the author's team based on UHPC. As the new bridge structure developed by UHPC can make outstanding contributions to the realization of the "carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals" and "sustainable development," and since recent studies have shown that the application of UHPC is expected to greatly reduce the amount of materials and carbon emissions and prolong the life of the structure, this book is an ideal update on the topic. For example, after calculation, when UHPC is applied to the arch bridge with compression as the main stress characteristic, compared with the steel arch bridge, the dead weight of the UHPC arch bridge is basically the same, and the cost and carbon emission are only 34% and 20% of the latter. Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) as a new generation of civil structural materials has the characteristics of high strength, high toughness and high durability. Through the collaborative innovation of new materials and new structures, the application of UHPC in bridge engineering is expected to achieve the goal of economical, environmentally-friendly, durable and high performance of the main structure. Teachers readers about the new structures and technologies in bridge engineering developed by the author's team based on UHPC Provides relevant experimental studies and the mechanical properties of different UHPC structures Helps users understand the design method and calculation theory of UHPC bridge structures Covers the characteristics and advantages of new UHPC structures and technologies applied to engineering

Book Behavior Design and Construction of Horizontally Curved Composite Steel Box Girder Bridges microform

Download or read book Behavior Design and Construction of Horizontally Curved Composite Steel Box Girder Bridges microform written by Muayad Whyib Aldoori and published by Library and Archives Canada = Bibliothèque et Archives Canada. This book was released on 2004 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horizontally curved girder bridges have been used considerably in recent years in highly congested urban areas. However, although significant research on physical testing and advanced analysis has been underway for the past decade, the practical employment of many recommendations has not been achieved by the engineering community nor have standards reflecting this work been brought into practice. The design process of curved composite bridges involves tracking the stresses and the potential failure change in the girders during erection, construction and service loading stages. For structural safety and serviceability, the designer estimates the stresses induced within the bridge and assure that they do not exceed the applicable specified limit state as required in bridge design standards. However, the designer may be concerned about the level of approximation that is used in his estimate or even the applicability of the underlying theory. To answer this question and provide the designer with more insight into the behavior of the curved bridges, the field testing during construction and service loading of a curved bridge located near Baltimore, Maryland is re-examined here using linear elastic three-dimensional finite element modeling. Comparisons are made between the finite element results and the measured results. Finally, to facilitate the finite element modeling effort for use by a designer, ANSYS Parametric Design Language (APDL) capabilities are used here to develop an analysis/design tool for "Bath-Tub" style curved steel girder bridges. This tool is then used to evaluate the effects of several important design variables on the response and behavior of the girders during the construction phase. This study demonstrates the ability of finite element modeling to assess the stiffness, serviceability performance, buckling behavior and ultimate strength of curved bridges during construction and it is a major step towards a performance based approach to design for stability. The level of safety or reliability that would be available during the erection and the construction processes of horizontally curved girder bridges represents another major concern for the designer. A three span continuous curved box girder bridge in Houston, Texas is used in this study as an example reflecting current detailing and fabricating practice and it is chosen for a detailed evaluation of the structural safety/reliability during the erection and construction process. This task involves simulating the girder erection and concrete slab placement sequence of the bridge using comprehensive nonlinear three dimensional finite element modeling.

Book Precast Segmental Box Girders

Download or read book Precast Segmental Box Girders written by Fadzli Mohamed Nazri and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-09 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the fundamentals of the elastic behaviour of erected precast segmental box girders (SBG) when subjected to static load, as well as the construction process (casting and erection work) involved. It analyzes and compares the experimental results with those obtained using the finite element method and theoretical calculations. A short-term deflection analysis for different loads is obtained by determining the maximum deflection, stress and strain value of single span precast SBG under a variety of transversal slope. The outcome of this work provides a better understanding of the behaviour of precast SBG in terms of structural responses as well as defects, so that maintenance work can then be focused on the critical section at mid span area specifically for the bridge project longitudinally and transversely. The book is of interest to industry professionals involved in conducting static load tests on bridges, and all researchers, designers, and engineers seeking to validate experimental work with numerical and analytical approaches.

Book Composite Action During Construction of Steel Trapezoidal Box Girder Bridges

Download or read book Composite Action During Construction of Steel Trapezoidal Box Girder Bridges written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In steel trapezoidal box girder bridge systems, the U-shaped steel girder is designed to act compositely with the concrete deck to form a closed box for live loading. During the construction stage, however, the behavior is not well understood. The usual practice of assuming the system to be non-composite during construction requires substantial top flange bracing to form a quasi-closed box section. Composite box girders with live loading, and girders during construction, have to be evaluated during the design of curved steel trapezoidal box girder bridges. Considering both cases, the design for construction loading is the least understood and is the most important. Stresses due to construction loading can reach up to 60-70 percent of the total design stress for a given cross section. A three-phase study was undertaken to investigate the behavior of curved trapezoidal box girders during construction.

Book Load Distribution Factors of Straight and Curved Steel Concrete Composite Box and I Girder Bridges

Download or read book Load Distribution Factors of Straight and Curved Steel Concrete Composite Box and I Girder Bridges written by Seyed Jalaleddin Fatemi and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the present research, load distribution factors of steel-concrete composite bridges subjected to loads recommended by Australian Bridge Design Code are determined. The bridges can have straight or curved (in plan) alignments with box girder or I girder sectional configurations. The load distribution factors are quite useful in bridge design practice specifically at their preliminary design stage. These factors help a designer to quickly calculate the stress resultants (shear force or bending moment) acting on different girders of a bridge from those acting on the entire bridge section which can be estimated easily in the case of a statically determinant structure such as simply supported straight bridge treated as a beam. Unfortunately, the horizontally curved bridges are statically indeterminate even if they are idealized as a curved beam. In order to address this issue, a closed form analytical solution without having any major simplification is developed which can be conveniently used by a designer for calculating the stress resultants acting on the entire section of a curved bridge. The unit load method, a method extracted from Castigliano's second theorem, is used to derive the analytical solution. As bridge loads consist of a number of wheel loads, the use of influence line diagrams is quite common as they help to calculate the maximum values of any parameter such as bending moment conveniently. For this purpose, the analytical solution is used to obtain the influence line diagram of shear force, bending moment and torsion of curved bridges. A detailed finite element modelling of these bridge structures is used to calculate the load distribution factors. In order to have a reliable finite element model of these structural system, different types of element such as solid element, shell element and beam element are used in different combinations to find out the most suitable option that can accurately simulate the components of these bridge systems with reasonable computational efficiency. The performance of these finite element models is assessed using experimental results available in literature. These bridges can be characterized with different parameters and these parameters can vary in a wide range in real scenario. Thus there is a need for development of design formulae or charts for load distribution factors in terms of these parameters that can be readily used for designing any bridge. For this purpose, a large number of configurations of these bridges are generated by varying their different parameters and these bridges are analysed using the abovementioned finite element model. A large number of results obtained from these analyses are used to develop the design guidelines in the form of empirical expressions using multivariate regression analysis.
