Book Performance and Corporate Governance in Microfinance Institutions

Download or read book Performance and Corporate Governance in Microfinance Institutions written by Roy Mersland and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We trace the relationship between firm performance and corporate governance in microfinance institutions (MFI) utilising a self constructed global data set on MFIs, collected from third-party rating agencies. We study the effect of board characteristics, ownership type, competition and regulation on the MFI's outreach to poor clients and its financial performance. The results show that split roles of CEO and chairman, a female CEO, and competition are important explanations. Larger board size decreases the average loan size while individual guaranteed loan increases it. No difference between nonprofit organisations and shareholder firms in financial performance and outreach is found.

Book The Handbook of Microfinance

Download or read book The Handbook of Microfinance written by Beatriz Armendariz and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Microfinance addresses the gap between clients who are benefiting from access to financial services via MFIs, and the potential market, which remains underserved or untapped. This gap can be attributed to a "mismatch" between what consumers, or potential clients, demand and what MFIs offer in terms of financial products. The scope of the book is wide. It includes successes and failures, main challenges and debates, methodologies for impact evaluation via random trials, leading trends in Asia versus Latin America, main efforts in Africa, the importance of value chains in Central America, ethical and gender issues, savings, microinsurance, governance, commercialization trends and the potential advantages and disadvantages of it. Lastly it features main lessons from informal finance and 19th-century credit cooperatives addressing the above-mentioned mismatch.

Book Financial Performance Corporate Governance and Microfinance Institutions Sustainability in Nigeria

Download or read book Financial Performance Corporate Governance and Microfinance Institutions Sustainability in Nigeria written by Collins Alobari and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship between financial performance and Microfinance sustainability, with interest on the impact of corporate governance in improving or otherwise of financial performance of microfinance banks in Nigeria. This interest was provoked by the fact that notwithstanding the introduction of corporate governance in Nigeria, there are still cases of the folding up of many microfinance institutions. Therefore, the study sought answers to: what is the relationship between financial performance and microfinance sustainability? What is the impact of board size and composition on financial performance? And what is the impact of the composition of board committees on financial performance? Using quantitative empirical method on selected microfinance banks in the South East Nigeria, the study employed the Ordinary Least Square (OLS) analysis on secondary data collected from financial reports of the selected banks for a period of thirteen (13) years (2005-2017). The study used the board of directors as the proxy for corporate governance, with Board size and composition as independent variables and Profit after Tax as dependent variables. The result shows that the link between board size and profitability does not imply board size to increase profitability as number of shareholders has negative relationship with profit before tax. Rather, the result found a positive relationship between equity of MFIs and profit after tax, which means that the higher the equity of MFIs, the higher their profitability. Therefore, the study recommends that the MFIs should concentrate more on raising share capital as well as constituting efficient boards and committees for effective corporate governance that will result in the sustainability of the MFIs.

Book Does Corporate Governance Impact the Financial Performance of Microfinance Institutions MFIs A Case Study in Sri Lanka

Download or read book Does Corporate Governance Impact the Financial Performance of Microfinance Institutions MFIs A Case Study in Sri Lanka written by Sujani Thrikawala and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the relationship between corporate governance and financial performance of Sri Lankan Microfinance Institutions (MFIs). The OLS regression, fixed effect and random effect models are used to analysis an unbalanced panel data comprising 300 firm-year observations over the period 2007 to 2012. We fine that financial performance of Sri Lankan MFIs improves when MFIs have female CEO, female chair, CEO/chairman duality, independent directors and client representation on the board rather than donor directors on the board. The financial performance may reduce with the higher number of female director representation. We also find no significant relation between international directors on the board, internal audit and firm performance of MFIs in Sri Lanka. This research provides insight for the policy-makers regarding corporate governance in Sri Lankan MFIs.

No effect of CEO-Board Chairman dual role and audit committees was found on the MFI profitability.

Book Corporate Governance Performance Relationship in Microfinance Institutions MFIs

Download or read book Corporate Governance Performance Relationship in Microfinance Institutions MFIs written by Sujani Thrikawala and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between governance and the performance of Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) is discussed in this paper. MFI performance encompasses both financial performance and outreach. Good governance in terms of strengthening stewardship, achievement of MFIs' primary objectives and promoting further development of the industry have been asserted as key elements of the literature pertaining to MFI performance. Similarly, several cases concerning poor governance have been analysed. Good corporate governance has been noted as even more important due to the demand for transparency and accountability of funds utilised in the microfinance activities. Further, MFIs need to have a solid governance framework to minimise the possibilities of management failures which may jeopardise the efficacious application of received funds from governments and donors. In prior studies, the nature of corporate governance practised by MFIs is less understood and no substantive work using multiple MFI outcomes over a number of years has been undertaken. The concerns raised in reviews of individual MFIs and normative discussions of what should constitute best practice do point to the need for better understanding of the nature of corporate governance practised by the MFIs and also, to understand the nature of the relationship that exists between institutional success and corporate governance especially for developing countries. This study therefore identifies and provides a framework for undertaking corporate governance research relating to MFIs.

Book Financial Performance and Outreach

Download or read book Financial Performance and Outreach written by Robert J. Cull and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microfinance contracts have proven able to secure high rates of loan repayment in the face of limited liability and information asymmetries, but high repayment rates have not translated easily into profits for most microbanks. Profitability, though, is at the heart of the promise that microfinance can deliver poverty reduction while not relying on ongoing subsidy. The authors examine why this promise remains unmet for most institutions. Using a data set with unusually high quality financial information on 124 institutions in 49 countries, they explore the patterns of profitability, loan repayment, and cost reduction. The authors find that institutional design and orientation matter substantially. Lenders that do not use group-based methods to overcome incentive problems experience weaker portfolio quality and lower profit rates when interest rates are raised substantially. For these individual-based lenders, one key to achieving profitability is investing more heavily in staff costs-a finding consistent with the economics of information but contrary to the conventional wisdom that profitability is largely a function of minimizing cost.

Book Transforming Microfinance Institutions

Download or read book Transforming Microfinance Institutions written by Joanna Ledgerwood and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006-08-30 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to a clear need by low-income people to gain access to the full range of financial services including savings, a growing number of microfinance NGOs are seeking guidelines to transform from credit-focused microfinance organizations to regulated deposit-taking financial intermediaries. In response to this trend, this book presents a practical 'how-to' manual for MFIs to develop the capacity to become licensed and regulated to mobilize deposits from the public. 'Transforming Microfinance Institutions' provides guidelines for regulators to license and regulate microfinance providers, and for transforming MFIs to meet the demands of two major new stakeholders regulators and shareholders. As such, it focuses on developing the capacity of NGO MFIs to mobilize and intermediate voluntary savings. Drawing from worldwide experience, it outlines how to manage the transformation process and address major strategic and operational issues inherent in transformation including competitive positioning, business planning, accessing capital and shareholders, and how to 'transform' the MFI's human resources, financial management, MIS, internal controls, and branch operations. Case studies then provide examples of developing a new regulatory tier for microfinance, and how a Ugandan NGO transformed to become a licensed financial intermediary. This book will be invaluable to regulators and microfinance NGOs contemplating institutional transformation and will be of tremendous use to donors and technical support agencies supporting MFIs in their transformation.

Book The Governance of Non Profit Micro Finance Institutions

Download or read book The Governance of Non Profit Micro Finance Institutions written by Roy Mersland and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microfinance is high on the public agenda, and better corporate governance has been identified as a key factor for enhancing the viability of the industry. However, recent literature on the subject struggles to identify the corporate governance mechanisms that influence the performance of the Micro Finance Institutions (MFIs). Guided by stakeholder and agency theories, this paper uses a historical parallel found in savings banks to present corporate governance lessons for not-for-profit MFIs today. The findings indicate that monitoring by bank associations, depositors, donors, and local communities was important in securing the survival of savings banks. In addition, a willingness to expand their mission to serve wealthier customers alongside the poor helped the banks become financially viable. These findings could prompt a rethinking of microfinance governance, which stresses regulation, for-profit ownership, and traditional vertical board control. The paper argues that a broader and more stakeholder-based understanding of corporate governance is necessary. Moreover, the paper demonstrates that historical studies can provide governance lessons for today.
