In cellular wireless systems the transmission at higher data rates is the beginning of the third generation wireless systems (3G), where this technology will provide múltiple type of services, such as video conferencing, Internet access, and multimedia communication. With respect to the Internet service, exist a system that have had a great impact, and it is the Wireless Local Área Networks (WLAN's) system, which work with the standard IEEE 802.11, and provides access to the Internet by the wireless médium. Therefore, with the coming of third generation wireless systems, the necessity arises to provide Internet access to the WLAN's from a third generation base station, and to do this, is necessary to know the performance of both systems. In this work, we investígate the performance of the WLAN's in terms of the through-put and delay that the frames experiment within the WLAN, under traffic conditions, by considering the two different access mechanism of the standard that are based on the CSMA/CA protocol and are: Basic CSMA/CA mechanism that uses an acknowledgment message at the end of each transmitted packet, and the RTS/CTS CSMA/CA mechanism that uses a RTS/CTS message exchange before transmitting a packet. In addition, are shown the techniques used to interconnect a WLAN to a base station of 3G, and we investígate the performance of this techniques (multicode and multicarrier) in terms of the delay that the frames suffer to arrive to the 3G base station.

A network administrator is faced with a plethora of wireless services, complex radio issues, and products for wireless data. There are brand new protocols and products that could become obsolete a day after installation! Over 40% of all deployed WLANs do not even have minimum security activated, exposing the company's network and records to easy outsider access.The WLAN industry is characterized by rapidly changing, incomplete or proprietary standards, which can impact interoperability goals. There are complicated ownership costs, performance limitations, and security configurations that exist for WLANs which many network administrators may not understand or know how to compare. This dissertation presents a decision support system (DSS) that enables a novice network administrator to compare WLAN protocol capabilities, rank security configurations, rate IT cost efforts and use an extensive feature list. An in-depth discussion, concerning WLAN protocols, virtual private networks (VPNs), various encryption algorithms, 802.1X authentication mechanisms, and compilation of network selection criteria provides the foundation to construct a small DSS to aid WLAN network administrators. The DSS uses a set of rules to evaluate a series of potential requirements and provides pertinent WLAN decision-making information. The DSS environment allows a number of specific what-if scenarios to be reviewed and compared; multiple solutions can be tried without having to deal with the consequences. Alternative technologies are listed by the DSS to educate the decision maker about other options.

While providing these functionalities, Wireless LAN (WLAN)'s have some security vulnerabilities that should be addressed. Failing to examine the security risks of WLAN technology and to take the necessary countermeasures may result in unauthorized entry into the legacy local area networks and other attacks. A secure connection to an intranet, which holds critical data and applications, must be the utmost consideration in the effort to protect critical resources. This thesis builds an open-source test-bed for evaluating WLAN security protocols. Moreover, it investigates the suitability of the IEEE 802.1X standard to provide the required security framework to WLANs. This research determines that the IEEE 802.1X could enhance the security level in authentication and privacy by enabling the rekeying process but would not prevent Denial of Service attacks via unauthenticated management frames.

An experimental IEEE 802.11b wireless network testbed is developed and deployed within a metropolitan area (1-40 kilometers) for the quantitative analysis of link quality for various realistic types of network traffic. Additionally, the functional limitations of individual system components are identified for consideration in the planning of future experiments.
