Book Multiwavelength Optical LANs

Download or read book Multiwavelength Optical LANs written by Georgios I. Papadimitriou and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2005-08-19 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last thirty years or so it has been widely recognised in the research community that the key transmission medium seeming capable of serving both the ever-growing demand for bandwidth and the unceasing need for new services, is optical fibre. In this context, Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) is the most popular technique for introducing concurrency among multiple user transmissions into the network and, thus, exploiting the huge amount of fibre bandwidth available under the severe limitations imposed by electronics speed on the maximum network access rate. This book extensively covers an important research area in optical networking, enabling readers to fully understand the concepts of optical LANs and learn details of architecture issues and control protocols. Through its careful focus on the local area, the book, covers the major architectural, topological and protocol issues regarding optical Local Area Networks (LANs) today. Considering that constant advances on optical component technology make all-optical WDM LANs all the more feasible for a wide commercial deployment, the book investigates thoroughly the crucial latter topic, i.e. the Media-Access Control (MAC) protocols that should be used. Besides introducing a noteworthy part of the vast literature on such protocols and providing some helpful distinguishing key protocol characteristics, the book is also innovative in focusing on a recent significant class of promising protocols whose operation is based on network feedback information. In this way, these adaptive protocols for optical LANs achieve an overall higher performance in comparison with many other non-adaptive schemes. Multiwavelength Optical LANs: Enables readers to understand the concepts of optical LANs and learn details of architecture issues and control protocols Focuses on the major architectural, topological and protocol issues regarding optical local area networks Presents the important class of adaptive protocols for optical LANs No Optical systems/network developers, or engineers and scientists working in optical networking should be without this book. The well considered approach also makes this recommended reading for undergraduate and graduate computer science, computer, electrical and telecommunications engineering students.

Book Towards an Optical Internet

Download or read book Towards an Optical Internet written by Admela Jukan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-10-31 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these exciting times of quotidianly progressing developments in communication techniques, where more than ever in the history of a technological progress, society's reliance on communication networks for medicine, education, data transfer, commerce, and many other endeavours dominates the human's everyday life, the optical networks are certainly one of the most promising and challenging networking options. Since their commercial arrival in the nineties, they have fundamentally changed the way of dealing with traffic engineering by removing bandwidth bottlenecks and eliminating delays. Today, after the revolutionary bandwidth expansion, the networking functionality migrates more and more to the optical layer, and the need to establish fast wavelength circuits and capacity-on-demand for the higher-layer networks, in particular data networks based on Internet Protocol (IP), has become one of the central networking issues for the new century. The unifying trends toward configurable all-optical network infrastructure open up a wide range of new network engineering and design choices dealing with networks' interoperability and common platforms for control and management. The Fifth Working Conference on Optical Network Design and Modelling, held in the Austrian capital Vienna, February 5-7, 2001, aims at presenting the most recent progress in optical communication techniques, new technologies, standardisation process, emerging markets and carriers. A short look at the Table of Contents of this book tells us, in fact, that this year's conference program reflects the current state of the art precisely.

Book Multichannel Optical Networks

Download or read book Multichannel Optical Networks written by Peng-Jun Wan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The huge bandwidth of optical fiber was recognized back in the 1970s during the early development of fiber optic technology. For the last two decades, the capacity of experimental and deployed systems has been increasing at a rate of 100-fold each decade-a rate exceeding the increase of integrated circuit speeds. Today, optical communication in the public communication networks has developed from the status of a curiosity into being the dominant technology. Various great challenges arising from the deployment of the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) have attracted a lot of efforts from many researchers. Indeed, the optical networking has been a fertile ground for both theoretical researches and experimental studies. This monograph presents the contribution from my past and ongoing research in the optical networking area. The works presented in this book focus more on graph-theoretical and algorithmic aspects of optical networks. Although this book is limited to the works by myself and my coauthors, there are many outstanding achievements made by other individuals, which will be cited in many places in this book. Without the inspiration from their efforts, this book would have never been possible. This monograph is divided into four parts: • Multichannel Optical Networking Architectures, • Broadcast-and-Select Passive Optical Networks, • Wavelength-Switched Optical Networks, • SONET/WDM Optical Networks. The first part consists of the first three chapters. Chapter 1 pro vides a brief survey on the networking architectures of optical trans- XVll xvm MULTICHANNEL OPTICAL NETWORKS port networks, optical access networks and optical premise networks.

Book Ultra wideband Coherent Optical LANs

Download or read book Ultra wideband Coherent Optical LANs written by S. Forcesi and published by Springer. This book was released on 1993-08-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The content of this book is the result of the work and the experiences of an interdisciplinary and strictly European group of researchers who have attempted to give birth to a new fibre communication network concept by exploiting the potential benefits of optical coherent transmission. The run towards this ambitious goal started in 1985 on the basis of the ESPRIT program incentives by an "ad hoc" consortium of industrial partners and research institutions. The first three years were dedicated to a feasibility study carried out by a reduced number of "pioneers". In 1989 the team was extended to eleven partners. There was already clear evidence of the increasing interest in Europe in exploring the actual limits of optical fibre coherent systems; the project had innovative and very advanced features that were gradually refined by incorporating the latest technological developments to which it has directly contributed. The main objective of the project targeted the development of the necessary building blocks to show experimentally the performance and the flexibility built into the proposed concept of multi-channel ultra-wideband network. The system concept developed within this project associates optical frequency division multiplexing with a suitable network architecture and management techniques to allow very high flexibility and efficiency in handling simultaneous transmission over the network (on each optical frequency) of multiple virtual channels each operating with a wide range of information rates ranging from a fraction of a Mb/s up to a maximum value in excess of 160 Mb/s.
