Book Performance Analysis of Mobility Support in IPv4 IPv6 Mixed Networks

Download or read book Performance Analysis of Mobility Support in IPv4 IPv6 Mixed Networks written by Uday M. Narayanan and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The popularity of Internet has increased exponentially over the last decade because of which the address depletion problem in the current version of Internet Protocol (IP), IPv4, has become of serious concern. This depletion has given rise to a newer version of the Internet protocol, Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6). IPv6 provides sufficient address space to meet the predicted increase of the Internet. Since IPv4 has been widely deployed, it is required that the existing IPv4 and the newly added IPv6 can co-exist and interoperate. Various mechanisms have been proposed for supporting the interoperability between IPv4 and IPv6. However, they are mostly designed for a static environment. Mobility introduces a new dimension to the problem of IPv4/IPv6 transition and interoperability. The mobility support of mobile terminals in a mixed IPv4/IPv6 environment remains largely unexplored. In this thesis, various handoff scenarios for a dual stack mobile node with a predominant IPv6 home address roaming in a mixed IPv4/IPv6 environment are analyzed. How handoffs can be supported is investigated and the handoff procedures for all scenarios are derived. An analytical model for the handoff signaling cost analysis is designed. The handoff delay and handoff failure probability are calculated. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate the signaling cost, handoff delay, and handoff failure probability of various handoff scenarios. Conclusions from this study can give great insights in designing new mobility-support mechanisms for IPv4/IPv6 transition and interoperability.

Book Information Processing and Management

Download or read book Information Processing and Management written by Vinu V Das and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 693 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is my pleasure to write the preface for Information Processing and Management. This book aims to bring together innovative results and new research trends in inf- mation processing, computer science and management engineering. If an information processing system is able to perform useful actions for an obj- tive in a given domain, it is because the system knows something about that domain. The more knowledge it has, the more useful it can be to its users. Without that kno- edge, the system itself is useless. In the information systems field, there is conceptual modeling for the activity that elicits and describes the general knowledge a particular information system needs to know. The main objective of conceptual modeling is to obtain that description, which is called a conceptual schema. Conceptual schemas are written in languages called conceptual modeling languages. Conceptual modeling is an important part of requi- ments engineering, the first and most important phase in the development of an inf- mation system.

Book Performance Analysis of Mobile IPv4 with and Without Route Optimization

Download or read book Performance Analysis of Mobile IPv4 with and Without Route Optimization written by Serap Altay and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The support of mobility in the modern communications network is becoming essential and important with the development of mobile devices. Mobile Internet Protocol is built on IPv4. Mobile IP has been proposed by IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) to support portable IP addresses on Internet. In the basic Mobile IP protocol, datagrams destined for the mobile node are sent from wired or wireless hosts. These datagrams have to travel through the home agent when mobile node is away from home. On the other hand, the datagrams sent from mobile hosts to wired host can be sent directly. This asymmetric routing, called "Triangle Routing". On the other hand, when the destination node is very close to mobile host, this creates a problem. Solving of the problem "Triangle Routing" is one appealing topic in mobile IP. IETF proposed extension part of the basic mobile IP, called "Route Optimization" to address this problem. IPv4 has already been widely deployed. Moreover, it will most probably dominate the Internet for a long time. Therefore, in thisthesis implemented mobile IPv4 with and without route optimization in OMNeT++. simulations have already been done to justify the modification.

Book Toward All IP Networks

Download or read book Toward All IP Networks written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT In this thesis the state of the art for IP networks and the two most predominant wireless access networks, UMTS and Wireless LANs, has been reviewed with respect to the enhancements required toward the objective of supporting services across different network technologies in a seamless manner. Three main areas of research were identified as key in the path toward All-IP networks: i) IP-based mobility management, ii) IP-based UMTS Radio Access Networks and iii) QoS for Wireless LANs. Future All-IP networks require of an IP-based mobility management protocol to support mobility across heterogeneous networks. Several protocols are being proposed in the IETF for this purpose with Mobile IPv6, Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 and Fast Handovers for Mobile IPv6 being the ones with a higher acceptance. Our contribution in this area has been the thorough study of the performance enhancements provided by each protocol and their associated costs in realistic scenarios to support the design process of Mobile IPv6-based networks where the suitability of the different options has to be evaluated. In addition, we proposed a combination of Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 and Fast Handovers for Mobile IPv6, based on the description provided in the Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 draft, that aims to outperform both proposals by adding the advantages of each of them. During the evaluation of the IP-based mobility management protocols, the mobility model influence over the performance results led to an additional line of study where the main characteristics of the Random Waypoint mobility model were analyzed. The random waypoint model is a commonly used mobility model for simulations of wireless communication networks. We gave a formal description of this model in terms of a discrete time stochastic process which provides a deep understanding on the characteristics of the mobility created by its usage. The results of our work are of practical value for performance analysis of communication network.

Book Performance Management an Analysis of an IPv6 Sensor on the Move Using Commercial Network Management Software

Download or read book Performance Management an Analysis of an IPv6 Sensor on the Move Using Commercial Network Management Software written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) has been the internet standard since specified nearly 27 years ago. Although IPv4 has served us well the ever-growing demand for additional IP addresses has lead to the introduction of a new IP version, IPv6. Supported by Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) for more than 10 years, IPv6 is recognized as a critical enabling technology throughout the federal government. IPv6 is also necessary in order to support the continuing growth of global communication requirements within Special Operations Forces (SOF); and ensure that the global Internet can continue to support a growing international user base and the increasing number of IP-enabled devices. Although numerous network management studies have been conducted few have concentrated on tactical or edge network management. Furthermore, few studies identify potential management tools supporting usability within the GIG. In coordinated effort with our primary sponsor, U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM), the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) has developed the Tactical Network Topology (TNT) field experimentation program aimed at providing solutions for today's battle space. TNT facilitates the examination of network management through the functional area of performance management and will serve to identify the tool that best supports network management of IPv6 tactical networks with IPv4 components.
