Book Error Detecting Codes

Download or read book Error Detecting Codes written by Torleiv Kløve and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Error detecting codes are very popular for error control in practical systems for two reasons. First, such codes can be used to provide any desired reliability of communication over any noisy channel. Second, implementation is usually much simpler than for a system using error correcting codes. To consider a particular code for use in such a system, it is very important to be able to calculate or estimate the probability of undetected error. For the binary symmetric channel, the probability of undetected error can be expressed in terms of the weight distribution of the code. The first part of the book gives a detailed description of all known methods to calculate or estimate the probability of undetected error, for the binary symmetric channel in particular, but a number of other channel models are also considered. The second part of the book describes a number of protocols for feedback communication systems (ARQ systems), with methods for optimal choice of error detecting codes for the protocols. Results have been collected from many sources and given a unified presentation. The results are presented in a form which make them accessible to the telecommunication system designer as well as the coding theory researcher and student. The system designer may find the presentation of CRC codes as well as the system performance analysis techniques particularly useful. The coding theorist will find a detailed account of a part of coding theory which is usually just mentioned in most text books and which contains a number of interesting and useful results as well as many challenging open problems. Audience: Essential for students, practitioners and researchers working in communications and coding theory. An excellent text for an advanced course on the subject.

Book Modulations and Error Correction Codes for Wireless Sensor Networks

Download or read book Modulations and Error Correction Codes for Wireless Sensor Networks written by Himanshu Shama and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the design and analysis of Error Control Codes (ECC) and modulation techniques for energy efficient wireless sensor networks. It examines the advantages of choosing right ECC -Modulation pair to optimise the energy saving during the operation of a wireless sensor node. In this book, a system-level methodology is presented for exploring various ECCs with different modulation schemes while taking into account the transmit signal energy, the circuit energy, the encoder energy, as well as the decoder energy of a wireless sensor network node. Based on the energy tradeoffs between radio and computation functions, we find an energy-optimal ECC that reduces node energy consumption and hence increases the wireless sensor node battery life. In this book, a methodology for exploring various ECCs based on their energy consumption for sensor nodes have been proposed. For this exploration, an integrated framework that computes the radio energy, as well as the computation energy, has been built. Various configurations of Hamming codes, RS codes, and CCs have been explored.

Book Coding for Wireless Ad hoc and Sensor Networks

Download or read book Coding for Wireless Ad hoc and Sensor Networks written by Nazanin Rahnavard and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis investigates both theoretical and practical aspects of the design and analysis of modern error-control coding schemes, namely low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes and rateless codes for unequal error protection (UEP). It also studies the application of modern error-control codes in efficient data dissemination in wireless ad-hoc and sensor networks. Two methodologies for the design and analysis of UEP-LDPC codes are proposed. For these proposed ensembles, density evolution formulas over the binary erasure channel are derived and used to optimize the degree distribution of the codes. Furthermore, for the first time, rateless codes that can provide UEP are developed. In addition to providing UEP, the proposed codes can be used in applications for which unequal recovery time is desirable, i.e., when more important parts of data are required to be recovered faster than less important parts. Asymptotic behavior of the UEP-rateless codes under the iterative decoding is investigated. In addition, the performance of the proposed codes is examined under the maximum-likelihood decoding, when the codes have short to moderate lengths. Results show that UEP-rateless codes are able to provide very low error rates for more important bits with only a subtle loss in the performance of less important bits. Moreover, it is shown that given a target bit error rate, different parts of the information symbols can be decoded after receiving different numbers of encoded symbols. This implies that information can be recovered in a progressive manner, which is of interest in many practical applications such as media-on-demand systems. This work also explores fundamental research problems related to applying error-control coding such as rateless coding to the problem of reliable and energy-efficient broadcasting in multihop wireless ad-hoc sensor networks. The proposed research touches on the four very large fields of wireless networking, coding theory, graph theory, and percolation theory. Based on the level of information that each node has about the network topology, several reliable and energy-efficient schemes are proposed, all of which are distributed and have low complexity of implementation. The first protocol does not require any information about the network topology. Another protocol, which is more energy efficient, assumes each node has local information about the network topology. In addition, this work proposes a distributed scheme for finding low-cost broadcast trees in wireless networks. This scheme takes into account various parameters such as distances between nodes and link losses. This protocol is then extended to find low-cost multicast trees. Several schemes are extensively simulated and are compared.

Book Error Correction Codes for Non Volatile Memories

Download or read book Error Correction Codes for Non Volatile Memories written by Rino Micheloni and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-06-03 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowadays it is hard to find an electronic device which does not use codes: for example, we listen to music via heavily encoded audio CD's and we watch movies via encoded DVD's. There is at least one area where the use of encoding/decoding is not so developed, yet: Flash non-volatile memories. Flash memory high-density, low power, cost effectiveness, and scalable design make it an ideal choice to fuel the explosion of multimedia products, like USB keys, MP3 players, digital cameras and solid-state disk. In ECC for Non-Volatile Memories the authors expose the basics of coding theory needed to understand the application to memories, as well as the relevant design topics, with reference to both NOR and NAND Flash architectures. A collection of software routines is also included for better understanding. The authors form a research group (now at Qimonda) which is the typical example of a fruitful collaboration between mathematicians and engineers.

Book Codes For Error Detection

Download or read book Codes For Error Detection written by Torleiv Klove and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2007-04-25 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two basic methods of error control for communication, both involving coding of the messages. With forward error correction, the codes are used to detect and correct errors. In a repeat request system, the codes are used to detect errors and, if there are errors, request a retransmission. Error detection is usually much simpler to implement than error correction and is widely used. However, it is given a very cursory treatment in almost all textbooks on coding theory. Only a few older books are devoted to error detecting codes. This book begins with a short introduction to the theory of block codes with emphasis on the parts important for error detection. The weight distribution is particularly important for this application and is treated in more detail than in most books on error correction. A detailed account of the known results on the probability of undetected error on the q-ary symmetric channel is also given.
