However, future applications in the area of high-performance computing will not only use individual parallel systems but a large set of networked resources. This scenario of computational and data Grids is attracting a great deal of attention from both computer and computational scientists. In addition to the inherent complexity of parallel machines, the sharing and transparency of the available resources introduces new challenges on performance analysis, techniques, and systems. In order to meet those challenges, a multi-disciplinary approach to the multi-faceted problems of performance is required. New degrees of freedom will come into play with a direct impact on the performance of Grid computing, including wide-area network performance, quality-of-service (QoS), heterogeneity, and middleware systems, to mention only a few.

It continued a tradition of successful conferences with friendly and pleasant atmospheres. The earlier organizations of OPODIS were held in Luzarches (1997), Amiens (1998), Hanoi (1999), Paris (2000), Mexico (2001) and Reims (2002). OPODIS is an open forum for the exchange of state-of-the-art knowledge on distributed computing and systems among researchers from around the world. Book excerpt: The authors seek fundamental insight into the role synchronization plays in distributed computer programs. Therefore, they study the execution behavior of two cyclic processes synchronizing once per cycle. This occurs when two processes unilaterally share a resource. They assumed the execution time of each process in isolation is known and deterministic. Through a Diophantine equation (whose coefficients and unknowns are integers), the authors obtain the time one process waits to use the resource as a function of how long the other process uses the resource. This function is found to be piece-wise constant. A complex expression for the location of discontinuities is found. Implications of the results on writing distributed programs are discussed.
