Book excerpt: Ultra-Wideband (UWB) is an upcoming technology for short-range high data rate applications like Wireless Personal Area Networks or medium/long-range low data rate applications like sensor networks. UWB has many captivating characteristics such as very short duration pulses (order of nanoseconds), multipath channel, large instantaneous bandwidth and time hopping pulse trains resulting in coexistence with the existing narrow band users. The Ultra Wideband communication systems employ the technique of Impulse radio of transmitting short duration pulses which result in extremely wide bandwidth and many performance benefits. Since UWB systems operate in dense multipath environments, RAKE receiver is the optimum choice for the receiver. Considering the evolving nature and the wide applications of this technology, it is important to analyze the system performance for different scenarios including the multi-user environment. My thesis mainly targets the analysis of the bit error rate (BER) performance of the time hopping pulse position modulation (TH-PPM) UWB system with the use of Ideal Rake Receiver and the performance degradation when the Selective and Partial Rake receivers are employed. I have also analyzed the effect of changing the repletion code length on the performance. The performance analysis is carried out for varying the modulation index M by employing 4-PPM instead of Binary PPM and simulation results show that 4-PPM offers a worse performance to the binary PPM case. Furthermore, I have evaluated the performance in the presence of Multiuser Interference using the Standard Gaussian Approximation. Finally, the performance of employing M-ary PPM in the multi-user scenario is also evaluated. The simulations are performed under the assumption of perfect channel knowledge. The IEEE UWB indoor channel model is used for Non Line of Sight (NLOS) Case C which is for 4 to 10 m distance between the transmitter and the receiver.

Book excerpt: The growing demand for high speed wireless applications and the scarcity of the spectral resources has necessitated the development of new concepts that enable more efficient utilization of the frequency spectrum. Ultra-wideband (UWB) is an emerging technology that is capable of utilizing the spectral resources more effectively by sharing the spectrum with other applications. This spectrum sharing however can potentially result in harmful interference from UWB systems to devices co-existing in the same frequency band. Therefore, in order to guarantee peaceful co-existence, the effects of UWB interference on co-existing systems have to be carefully analyzed. Towards this goal, in this thesis, we first study the effects of multi-band (MB) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) UWB interference on a generic uncoded narrowband (NB) system. For this purpose, we develop analytical expressions for the amplitude probability distribution (APD) and the bit error rate (BER) performance of the NB system in the presence of MB-OFDM interference. We use the obtained results to assess the accuracy of the Gaussian approximation (GA) for MB-OFDM UWB interference. We show that for most channel models and signal bandwidths the GA is unable to accurately predict the NB system performance and the exact BER analysis has to be used to obtain meaningful results. We also analyze the effects of UWB interference in a more general framework that allows us to study the impact of general types of non-Gaussian noise and interference on generic uncoded victim systems. Specifically, we present a unified asymptotic symbol error rate (SER) analysis of linearly modulated systems impaired by fading and generic non- Gaussian noise and interference. Our analysis also encompasses diversity reception with equal gain and selection combining and is extended to binary orthogonal modulation. The obtained asymptotic results show that for high signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) the SER of the victim system.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled "Interference Cancellation in Impulse Radio" Submitted by Xufang Wang for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in January 2005 Ultra wideband (UWB) technology has recently received much attention as a potential candidate for low-cost short-range ultra high-speed wireless communications. One of the enabling techniques for ultra wideband (UWB) communications is impulse radio. Impulse radio employs short-duration pulses, producing a signal with an ultra wide (several GHz) bandwidth. This radio system has to co-exist with many existing communication systems transmitting on the same frequency band, for example, IEEE 802.11a WLANs operating around 5GHz, so interference poses problems for its use. In this thesis, two schemes are proposed for interference cancellation in impulse radio. In the first scheme, a preprocessor for ultra wideband (UWB) communications using impulse radio is proposed. The received UWB signal is divided into subband signals, which can be individually processed and recombined before demodulation of the signal. Perfect reconstruction of the pulses via analog subband processing is achieved. The division of subbands is flexible and the number depends on the number of frequency bands that require processing. Only the subbands that require processing need to be digitized, so the sampling rate requirement is greatly reduced. The proposed preprocessor can be applied to signal processing in impulse radio. The application of the preprocessor to narrowband or wideband interference cancellation is demonstrated, and found to be effective and robust. In the second scheme, the effect of interference on the performance of the UWB system is analyzed and interference cancellation by template design is proposed. Simulation results show that the scheme can effectively suppress interference and improve system performance. The scheme is applicable to both wideband and narrowband interference cancellation. For high speed ultra wideband communications using impulse radio, intersymbol interference (ISI) is unavoidable. The traditional method of combating ISI is to employ an equalizer. Due to the low duty cycle of UWB pulses and extremely short UWB pulse width, however, the number of the equalizer taps has to be impractically large and equalization is only achievable at an exceptionally high pulse rate. A novel ISI cancellation scheme based on wavelet transformation is also proposed. Knowledge of the channel is not required. The desired signal pulse can be distinguished from the interference pulse and precisely located. Instead of using the traditional received pulse, wavelet transformation is applied to generate a new spike signal for demodulation. A detailed theoretical analysis is presented and close-form expressions are derived.
