Book Performance Analysis of Multiple Input Multiple Output Free Space Optical Communication Systems

Download or read book Performance Analysis of Multiple Input Multiple Output Free Space Optical Communication Systems written by Xiaoyan Wang and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Free Space Optical (FSO) communication i.e. optical communication without fibers is slowly becoming quite popular as fiber and its installation cost as well as difficulties involved becomes zero. The FSO communication is already making its impact in deep space communication and is expected to replace the existing optical fiber communication systems in the near future. In order to further speed up the optical communication, the Multiple Input/Multiple Output (MIMO) technology from microwave MIMO systems is being investigated. The characteristics of the Multiple Input/Multiple Output Free Space Optical communication systems using APD receivers have been discussed. The APD-based receivers for MIMO FSO systems under normal working conditions are designed and the characteristics of the components, such as InGaAs APDs, GaAs MESFET transimpedance amplifiers, a matched filter and an equalizer, etc., are considered. The probabilistic analysis of a FSO channel, APDs and noise in the FSO systems has been carried out. The main contributions in this dissertation are: obtaining the detailed closed-form expressions for the upper bounds of the error probabilities, analyzing the impacts of different parameters in MIMO FSO systems, and thorough analysis of a more complex model of the MIMO FSO system involving Webb distribution for APD-based optical receiver, the probabilistic analysis of the detection for pulse position modulation signaling and the transmitted symbol matrix for MIMO FSO equal gain combining systems. Using this detailed analysis the average symbol error probability, average bit error probability and average pairwise probability are also obtained. The equations have been derived by using the Fourier series analysis method. The modified Gauss-Chebyshev method for error probability calculation is also proposed. Results for average SEP and average BEP under different parameters are obtained and the impact of these parameters on MIMO FSO systems is also discussed.

Book Optical Wireless Communications

Download or read book Optical Wireless Communications written by Murat Uysal and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-25 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on optical wireless communications (OWC), an emerging technology with huge potential for the provision of pervasive and reliable next-generation communications networks. It shows how the development of novel and efficient wireless technologies can contribute to a range of transmission links essential for the heterogeneous networks of the future to support various communications services and traffic patterns with ever-increasing demands for higher data-transfer rates. The book starts with a chapter reviewing the OWC field, which explains different sub-technologies (visible-light, ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) communications) and introduces the spectrum of application areas (indoor, vehicular, terrestrial, underwater, intersatellite, deep space, etc.). This provides readers with the necessary background information to understand the specialist material in the main body of the book, which is in four parts. The first of these deals with propagation modelling and channel characterization of OWC channels at different spectral bands and with different applications. The second starts by providing a unified information-theoretic treatment of OWC and then discusses advanced physical-layer methodologies (including, but not limited to: advanced coding, modulation diversity, cooperation and multi-carrier techniques) and the ultimate limitations imposed by practical constraints. On top of the physical layer come the upper-layer protocols and cross-layer designs that are the subject of the third part of the book. The last part of the book features a chapter-by-chapter assessment of selected OWC applications. Optical Wireless Communications is a valuable reference guide for academic researchers and practitioners concerned with the future development of the world’s communication networks. It succinctly but comprehensively presents the latest advances in the field.

Book Design and Performance Investigation of Optical Wireless Communication Systems in Indoor and Outdoor Scenarios

Download or read book Design and Performance Investigation of Optical Wireless Communication Systems in Indoor and Outdoor Scenarios written by Pranav Sharda and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2024-07-15 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2023 in the subject Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, language: English, abstract: Over the recent few years, optical wireless communication (OWC) has attracted significant attention in both academia and the research community. Contrary to radio frequency (RF) systems, the spatial confinement of the optical beams makes the OWC system a potential system offering higher data rates and secured communication. OWC systems and applications in several areas, such as terrestrial outdoor (free-space optical (FSO) communication), indoor and outdoor visible light communication (VLC), etc. For the terrestrial outdoor FSO systems, spatial diversity techniques are employed over FSO links to enhance the diversity and overall performance. To this end, the spatial diversity techniques corresponding to the state-of-the-art are repetition coding (RC), transmit laser selection (TLS), and orthogonal space-time block codes. Note that, TLS is the optimal transmission scheme in the FSO systems. In this dissertation, we name the conventional TLS scheme as a single TLS (STLS) scheme. However, the performance of the conventional STLS scheme is highly dependent on the feedback errors. On the other side, the outdoor VLC finds applications in vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications, infrastructure-to-vehicle (I2V) communications, etc. Emphasizing the state-of-the-art corresponding to the outdoor V2V-VLC systems, there is a lack of comprehensive modeling and performance investigation under the adverse challenges of the outdoor VLC environment. Moreover, to address the challenges of the next-generation-based outdoor intelligent transportation systems (ITSs), an indoor testbed design for an outdoor I2V-VLC system is still missing. In order to enhance the diversity and overall performance of the terrestrial outdoor FSO systems, the study begins by proposing two novel TLS schemes. We call the proposed schemes as two TLS (TTLS) and modified error-tolerant weighting scheme (METWS). Note that, the conventional STLS scheme gives optimal performance under a perfect feedback scenario. However, its performance degrades significantly under an imperfect feedback scenario. To this end, the two proposed schemes overcome the practical limitations of the conventional STLS scheme. Moreover, we analyze the performance of the two proposed schemes for both perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI)-based communication scenarios. Further, different performance metrics, such as bit error rate (BER), diversity gain, etc., are thoroughly analyzed. Furthermore, to gain more insight

Book Phase Modulated Optical Communication Systems

Download or read book Phase Modulated Optical Communication Systems written by Keang-Po Ho and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-06 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiber-optic communication systems have revolutionized our telecommunication infrastructures – currently, almost all telephone land-line, cellular, and internet communications must travel via some form of optical fibers. In these transmission systems, neither the phase nor frequency of the optical signal carries information – only the intensity of the signal is used. To transmit more information in a single optical carrier, the phase of the optical carrier must be explored. As a result, there is renewed interest in phase-modulated optical communications, mainly in direct-detection DPSK signals for long-haul optical communication systems. When optical amplifiers are used to maintain certain signal level among the fiber link, the system is limited by amplifier noises and fiber nonlinearities. Phase-Modulated Optical Communication Systems surveys this newly popular area, covering the following topics: - The transmitter and receiver for phase-modulated coherent lightwave systems - Method for performance analysis of phase-modulated optical signals - Direct-detection DPSK signal with fiber nonlinearities, degraded by nonlinear phase noise and intrachannel effects - Wavelength-division-multiplexed direct-detection DPSK signals - Multi-level phase-modulated optical signals, such as the four-phase DQPSK signal. Graduate students, professional engineers, and researchers will all benefit from this updated treatment of an important topic in the optical communications field.

Book Diversity Techniques in Free space Optical Communications

Download or read book Diversity Techniques in Free space Optical Communications written by Sahar Molla Aghajanzadeh and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Free-space optical (FSO) communication offers significant technical and operational advantages such as higher bandwidth capacity, robustness to electromagnetic interference, a high degree of spatial confinement (bringing virtually unlimited reuse and inherent security), low power requirements, and unregulated spectrum. FSO communication can be deployed as an efficient solution for a wide range of applications such as last-mile access, fiber backup, back-haul for wireless cellular networks, and disaster recovery among others. Although FSO system have many appealing features, they have rather disappointing performance for long links due to the degrading effects of atmospheric turbulence-induced fading. In this dissertation, we investigate different diversity techniques to boost the performance of FSO systems in the presence of the atmospheric turbulence-induced fading.
