Book Photomontage Second World of Art

Download or read book Photomontage Second World of Art written by Dawn Ades and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2021-10-05 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fully updated new edition of this classic in-depth study of the pioneering art form of photomontage by renowned art historian Dawn Ades. Manipulation of the photograph is as old as photography itself. It has embodied and enlivened political propaganda, satire, and commercial art and helped visualize the “brave new world” of the future through surreal and fantastic images. Photomontage has been embraced by artists from the late nineteenth century to today, including the Dadaists, John Heartfield, El Lissitzky, Hannah Höch, and Alexander Rodchenko. In this updated classic, art historian Dawn Ades addresses the aesthetic, social, and historical implications of the varied manifestations and uses of manipulated photographs. Revered by artists, critics, and readers alike, this new edition is brought up-to-date to reflect technological developments and changes in visual culture, discussing the work of contemporary artists Kathy Bruce, Linder, Cold War Steve, and others. Photomontage also includes refreshed image reproductions as well as new full-color illustrations.

Book Percy Rainford

Download or read book Percy Rainford written by Michael R. Taylor and published by Verlag Far Moderne Kunst. This book was released on 2018-11-05 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to focus on the work of the Jamaican-born American photographer, Percy Rainford.Rainford began his career in the early 1930s as a photographer of fine art for catalogues and other publications, working for major museums in New York, including the Whitney Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as artists, who often needed high quality reproductions of their paintings and sculpture when applying for fellowships. After meeting artist/architect, Frederick Kiesler and artist, Marcel Duchamp, Rainford's work began to transcend its documentary impulse and the photographs he made in the 1940s and 1950s reflect his newfound interest in modernist experimentation.Although virtually unknown today, Rainford was a highly respected artist during this period and this book, which is drawn from extensive archival research and interviews with the artist's family, is intended to showcase the work of this remarkable avant-garde photographer, while also shedding new light on his collaborations with Duchamp and Kiesler.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the Jungian term of the complex the present volume inquires about the making of the artistic persona in twentieth-century photography. The articles examine photographic (self-)portraits, the dynamics between self-statements of artists and photographers, the interrelations of photography, of painting and of performance art and investigate their origins in the history of ideas. The volume traces a portrait of photography as a metascience; as preparatory work, a source of inspiration and an alternate medium in which artists could explore different subjects. With essays by Ulrike Blumenthal, Till Cremer, Victoria Fleury, Jadwiga Kamola, Weronika Kobylińska-Bunsch, Nadja Köffler, Constance Krüger, Wilma Scheschonk, Gerd Zillner.

Book excerpt: Montage, today, is a widespread procedure that doesn’t concern just artistic production, but also our daily lives and the use everyone makes of that huge visual archive that contemporary media place at our disposal. In a technologically advanced society, where the notion of postproduction regulates our relationship with images and objects, it is therefore necessary to thoroughly investigate the role, possibilities, and, most of all, anthropological and political connotations of montage; and to ask ourselves whether – in comparison to the heroic years of the avant-garde movements – montage has become a faded and standardized practice or if it is a more and more effective means to understand and reprogramme the world, especially in relation to the technical possibilities offered by new media and remix practices.

Book excerpt: This book is about Edward Ted Ray who was born in the village of Gorey, on the east coast of the island of Jersey near Grouville, which was the nursery of many famous golfers, including the legendary Harry Vardon. Ted was one of the biggest stars in professional golf, considered a mighty driver of the golf ball and a prince of putters. He won the Open Championship in 1912, the US Open in 1920, and many other prestigious tournaments in Great Britain and mainland Europe. He played for Great Britain against the USA in 1921 at Gleneagles and in 1926 at Wentworth. He was the player captain of the Great Britain team in the first ever Ryder Cup match of 1927. Ted would also represent England against Scotland on nine occasions in their annual team matches, as well as Englands nonplaying captain in the 1930s. Ted Ray toured the USA, along with Harry Vardon, in 1913 and 1920 to promote and popularize golf in the Americas. He, like many of the greats of the game, is one of the forgotten men of golf. The book endeavors to spotlight a golfer who is now a distant memory and one that has inexplicably never been inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Book excerpt: aka Marcel Duchamp is an anthology of recent essays by leading scholars on Marcel Duchamp, arguably the most influential artist of the twentieth century. With scholarship addressing the full range of Duchamp's career, these papers examine how Duchamp's influence grew and impressed itself upon his contemporaries and subsequent generations of artists. Duchamp provides an illuminating model of the dynamics of play in construction of artistic identity and legacy, which includes both personal volition and contributions made by fellow artists, critics, and historians. This volume is not only important for its contributions to Duchamp studies and the light it sheds on the larger impact of Duchamp's art and career on modern and contemporary art, but also for what it reveals about how the history of art itself is shaped over time by shifting agendas, evolving methodologies, and new discoveries.

Book Marcel Duchamp Second World of Art

Download or read book Marcel Duchamp Second World of Art written by Dawn Ades and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revised and expanded edition of one of the most original books ever written on the enigmatic artist Marcel Duchamp. Genius, anti-artist, charlatan, guru, impostor? Since he arrived on the scene in 1914, Marcel Duchamp has been called all of these. Almost no other artist of the twentieth century has inspired more passion and controversy, nor exerted a greater influence on art. At the same time, Duchamp continually challenged the very nature of art and strove to redefine it as conceptual rather than as product by questioning why the medium was mostly a "retinal" experience. Always the provocateur, Duchamp never ceased to be engaged, openly or secretly, in activities and works that transformed traditional artmaking. Through his works like Fountain; Bicycle Wheel; L.H.O.O.Q.; and Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2, Duchamp played with the idea of what art can be, opening new possibilities for future generations. This revised entry in the World of Art series, written by three leading experts on twentieth-century art, and published with support of Duchamp’s widow, is one of the most original books written on this enigmatic artist. Featuring a new chapter and preface, as well as updates throughout from specialist scholars who are active in their fields, this is the definitive introduction to Duchamp. Thoroughly illustrated, this volume combines thirty years of research by the authors and challenges history’s presumptions, misunderstandings, and pieces of misinformation about Marcel Duchamp and his legacy.
