I tradizionali manuali di storia della pedagogia, da questo punto di vista, segnano il passo, poiché concepiscono la storia educativa sostanzialmente come storia delle idee e del pensiero dei grandi Autori e Ideologi del passato, non tanto come storia di fatti ed eventi educativo-formativi che hanno segnato realmente i passaggi epocali della trasmissione dei saperi, delle pratiche, dell’identità stessa. Ma la ricerca contemporanea nasce ancora da quella storica, dove lo studio delle esperienze socio-educative fondamentali dell'uomo o la storia della mentalità formativa sono inevitabilmente fonte di esperienza per costruire o ricostruire le azioni formative del presente. A partire dalla modernità, gli orientamenti formativi ratificano un’esigenza percepita diffusamente, di responsabilità (umanesimo metodologico: Barocco, Scienza Nuova, Illuminismo) e di intenzionalità formative (umanesimo storico e dialettico: Romanticismo e movimenti dell’Ottocento e Primo Novecento), di valorizzazione delle potenzialità del singolo, che rifiuta le forme di omologazione e standardizzazione di pensiero e atteggiamenti che frammentano e impoveriscono la condizione esistenziale degli individui. Lanciando uno sguardo al futuro sulla base del passato la ricerca storico-educativa si conclude con la proposta di un framework dinamico dell’eco-identità inteso come contributo per elaborare un nuovo progetto di uomo per la formazione contemporanea.

The mythological figures that dot the landscape of Roman poetry entail their own predetermined plotlines and received characteristics: the idea of a gentle, maternal Medea is as absurd as a spineless and weak Achilles. For Roman poets, the problem is even more acute since they follow on late in a highly developed literary tradition. The fictional characters that populate Roman literature, such as Aeneas and Oedipus, link text and reader in a form of communication that is strikingly different from a first person narrator to an addressee. With Exemplary Traits, Mira Seo addresses this often overlooked question. Her study offers an examination of how Roman poets used models dynamically to create character, and how their referential approach to character reveals them mobilizing the literary tradition. Close readings of Virgil, Lucan, Seneca, and Statius offer a more nuanced discussion of the expectations of both authors and audiences in the Roman world than those currently available in scholarly debate. By tracing the philosophical and rhetorical concepts that underlie the function of characterization, Exemplary Traits allows for a timely reconsideration of it as a fruitful literary technique.

It charts how shows on fascism have evolved since the postwar period in Italy, explores representations of Italian fascism in exhibitions across the world, and highlights blindspots in art and cultural history, as well as in exhibition practices. Featuring contributions from an international group of art, architectural, design, and cultural historians, as well as journalists and curators, this book treats fascism as both a historical moment and as a major paradigm through which critics, curators, and the public at large have defined the present moment since World War II. It interweaves historical perspectives, critical theory, and direct accounts of exhibitions from the people who conceived them or responded to them most significantly in order to examine the main curatorial strategies, cultural relevance, and political responsibility of art exhibitions focusing on the Fascist period. Through close analysis, the chapter authors unpack the multifaceted specificity of art shows, including architecture and exhibition design; curatorial choices and institutional history; cultural diplomacy and political history; theories of viewership; and constructed collective memory, to evaluate current curatorial practice. In offering fresh new perspectives on the historiography, collective memory, and understanding of fascist art and culture from a contemporary standpoint, Curating Fascism sheds light on the complex exhibition history of Italian fascism not just within Italy but in such countries as the USA, the UK, Germany, and Brazil. It also presents an innovative approach to the growing field of exhibition theory by bringing contributions from curators and exhibition historians, who critically reflect upon curatorial strategies with respect to the delicate subject of fascism and fascist art, into dialogue with scholars of Italian studies and art historians.
