Book excerpt: Excerpt from Perch Lake Mounds: With Notes on Other New York Mounds, and Some Accounts of Indian Trails He said there was no accumulation of burned stones in the mounds, probably meaning the small ones used in heating water. From this and the lack of pottery he concluded that no cooking, or but little, was done in them. Most of the many stones found show the action Of fire, but they are usually of some size. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Dan Josselyn Memorial Publication The first comprehensive and systematic investigation of a Woodland period ceremonial center. Kolomoki, one of the most impressive archaeological sites in the southeastern United States, includes at least nine large earthen mounds in the lower Chattahoochee River valley of southwest Georgia. The largest, Mound A, rises approximately 20 meters above the terrace that borders it. From its flat-topped summit, a visitor can survey the string of smaller mounds that form an arc to the south and west. Archaeological research had previously placed Kolomoki within the Mississippian period (ca. A.D. 1000-1500) primarily because of the size and form of the mounds. But this book presents data for the main period of occupation and mound construction that confirm an earlier date, in the Woodland period (ca. A.D. 350-750). Even though the long-standing confusion over Kolomoki’s dating has now been settled, questions remain regarding the lifeways of its inhabitants. Thomas Pluckhahn's research has recovered evidence concerning the level of site occupation and the house styles and daily lives of its dwellers. He presents here a new, revised history of Kolomoki from its founding to its eventual abandonment, with particular attention to the economy and ceremony at the settlement. This study makes an important contribution to the understanding of middle range societies, particularly the manner in which ceremony could both level and accentuate status differentiation within them. It provides a readable overview of one of the most important but historically least understood prehistoric Native American sites in the United States.

Book Ogimaag

Download or read book Ogimaag written by Cary Miller and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cary Miller's Ogimaag: Anishinaabeg Leadership, 17601845 reexamines Ojibwe leadership practices and processes in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. At the end of the nineteenth century, anthropologists who had studied Ojibwe leadership practices developed theories about human societies and cultures derived from the perceived Ojibwe model. Scholars believed that the Ojibwes typified an anthropological "type" of Native society, one characterized by weak social structures and political institutions. Miller counters those assumptions by looking at the historical record and examining how leadership was distributed and enacted long before scholars arrived on the scene. Miller uses research produced by Ojibwes themselves, American and British officials, and individuals who dealt with the Ojibwes, both in official and unofficial capacities. By examining the hereditary position of leaders who served as civil authorities over land and resources and handled relations with outsiders, the warriors, and the respected religious leaders of the Midewiwin society, Miller provides an important new perspective on Ojibwe history.

Book A Sketch of the Life of Okah Tubbee

Download or read book A Sketch of the Life of Okah Tubbee written by Laah Ceil Manatoi Elaah Tubbee and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Sketch of the Life of Okah Tubbee, published in 1852, begins with testimonials regarding Okah Tubbee's flute-playing abilities and with a lightly edited version of Lewis Allen's "Essay Upon the Indian Character" from the earlier edition of Tubbee's narrative, as well as the so-called Indian Covenant "between the Six Nations and the Choctaws." Tubbee's narrative begins with brief recollections of his father and Tubbee's childhood with his "unnatural mother." Tubbee's visit to Choctaw Indians in Alexandria is described before his apprenticeship to the cruel blacksmith Mr. Russell, and his subsequent apprenticeship to Dr. A.P. Merrill, leading to his desire to become an "Indian Doctor." Tubbee's details his travels and voyages by steamboat, first as a musician with the Louisiana Volunteers and later on his own. Towards the end of his narrative, Tubbee expresses a desire to let his wife, Laah Ceil, speak for herself. In this final, additional section, Laah Ceil describes her birth, her education, her Christian convictions, and the manner in which she met and married Tubbee. She also recounts their travels together and their advocacy "in behalf of the Indians" and against forced relocation. The Sketch concludes with an original poem by Laah Ceil and a collection of letters, documents, and vouchers attesting to Okah Tubbee's identity and his medical skill. A DOCSOUTH BOOK. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The remarkable story of a North Carolina Cherokee community who avoided forced removal on the Trail of Tears During the 1838 forced Cherokee removal by the US government, a number of close-knit Cherokee communities in the Southern Appalachian Mountains refused to relinquish their homelands, towns, and way of life. Using a variety of tactics, hundreds of Cherokees avoided the encroaching US Army and remained in the region. In his book Their Determination to Remain: A Cherokee Community's Resistance to the Trail of Tears in North Carolina, Lance Greene explores the lives of wealthy plantation owners Betty and John Welch who lived on the southwestern edge of the Cherokee Nation. John was Cherokee and Betty was White. Although few Cherokees in the region participated in slavery, the Welches held nine African Americans in bondage. During removal, the Welches assisted roughly 100 Cherokees hiding in the steep mountains. Afterward, they provided land for these Cherokees to rebuild a new community, Welch's Town. Betty became a wealthy and powerful plantation mistress because her husband could no longer own land. Members of Welch's Town experienced a transitional period in which they had no formal tribal government or clear citizenship yet felt secure enough to reestablish a townhouse, stickball fields, and dance grounds. Greene's innovative study uses an interdisciplinary approach, incorporating historical narrative and archaeological data, to examine how and why the Welches and members of Welch's Town avoided expulsion and reestablished their ways of life in the midst of a growing White population who resented a continued Cherokee presence. The Welch strategy included Betty's leadership in demonstrating outwardly their participation in modern Western lifestyles, including enslavement, as John maintained a hidden space--within the boundaries of their land--for the continuation of traditional Cherokee cultural practices. Their Determination to Remain explores the complexities of race and gender in this region of the antebellum South and the real impacts of racism on the community.
