Book The Complete Story of the Grail

Download or read book The Complete Story of the Grail written by Chrétien (de Troyes) and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2015 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mysterious and haunting Grail makes its first appearance in literature in Chrétien de Troyes' Perceval at the end of the twelfth century. But Chrétien never finished his poem, leaving an unresolved story and an incomplete picture of the Grail. It was, however, far too attractive an idea to leave. Not only did it inspire quite separate works; his own unfinished poem was continued and finally completed by no fewer than four other writers. The Complete Story of the Grail is the first ever translation of the whole of the rich and compelling body of tales contained in Chrétien's poem and its four Continuations, which are finally attracting the scholarly attention they deserve. Besides Chrétien's original text, there are the anonymous First Continuation (translated here in its fullest version), the Second Continuation attributed to Wauchier de Denain, and the intriguing Third and Fourth Continuations - probably written simultaneously, with no knowledge of each other's work - by Manessier and Gerbert de Montreuil. Two other poets were drawn to create preludes explaining the background to Chrétien's story, and translated here also are their works: The Elucidation Prologue and Bliocadran. Only in this, The Story of the Grail's complete form, can the reader appreciate the narrative skill and invention of the medieval poets and their surprising responses to Chrétien's theme - not least their crucial focus on the knight as a crusader. Equally, Chrétien's original poem was almost always copied in conjunction withone or more of the Continuations, so this translation represents how most medieval readers would have encountered it. Nigel Bryant's previous translations from Medieval French include Perlesvaus - the High Bookof the Grail, Robert de Boron's trilogy Merlin and the Grail, the Medieval Romance of Alexander, The True Chronicles of Jean le Bel and Perceforest.

Book excerpt: Taking the legends surrounding King Arthur and weaving in new psychological elements of personal desire and courtly manner, Chrétien de Troyes fashioned a new form of medieval Romance. The Knight of the Cart is the first telling of the adulterous relationship between Lancelot and Arthur's Queen Guinevere, and in The Knight with the Lion Yvain neglects his bride in his quest for greater glory. Erec and Enide explores a knight's conflict between love and honour, Cligés exalts the possibility of pure love outside marriage, while the haunting The Story of the Grail chronicles the legendary quest. Rich in symbolism, these evocative tales combine closely observed detail with fantastic adventure to create a compelling world that profoundly influenced Malory, and are the basis of the Arthurian legends we know today.

Download or read book Sir Perceval of Galles written by Reginald Harvey Griffith and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-04 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Griffith's treatise is a study of the sources of the Middle English metrical romance, Sir Perceval of Galles, edited in 1844 for the Camden Society by J. O. Halliwell as one of The Thornton Romances preserved in the unique MS. of the Lincoln Cathedral library. As is well known to students of the Arthurian romances, this particular romance, though it strongly resembles Chrétien's Perceval in other respects, contains nothing about the Holy Grail, and so in the present study there is nothing that bears directly on the much-vexed question of the origin of that legend. Any discussion, however, of the sources of Sir Perceval of Galles is bound to be also, to a considerable extent, a discussion of the sources of Chrétien's poem and the other Grail romances, so that the book will be of interest to all students who have occupied themselves with this group of romances. As appears from our author's Introduction, almost every conceivable shade of opinion has been expressed at one time or another concerning the relation of the Middle English poem to that of Chrétien and his continuators. Such expressions of opinion, however, have been mainly incidental to discussions of the problem of the origin of the Holy Grail legend. The few pages devoted to the subject in Steinbach's dissertation, Über den Einfluss des Crestien de Troies auf die altenglische Literatur (Leipzig, 1885), still remained the fullest discussion of the question up to the publication of the present work. Under these circumstances it was manifestly desirable that someone should take up the sources of Sir Perceval as the subject of an especial monograph. It is possible, of course, to mar such a study by making it so overwhelmingly minute as to weary the reader (as especially in Chapters III and V), or by drawing into the comparison material which offers no real analogy to the story under discussion. In the opinion of the present writer Professor Griffith is chargeable with both of these errors to a very serious degree, yet the detailed comparison of the main texts is bound to further our understanding of the problem, even though we may not agree with either the conclusions of the author or his methods of investigation. Professor Griffith's general conclusion is that the English poem is not only wholly independent of Chrétien but is indeed merely "an English singer's versification of a folk-tale that was known in his district of Northwest England" (p. 131). But how can we accept such a result as this? In the first place it conflicts with the French nomenclature of the poem, e. g., "Syr Percevelle the Galayse" (I. 1643), an evident adaptation from the French "Perceval le galois" (older form "galeis"), "Acheflour" (ll. 20 ff.), the name of the hero's mother, which, whatever its etymology, is also obviously French, "Ewayne fytz Asoure" (l. 261), etc. In the next place - and this is an even more serious matter - it leaves unexplained the virtually complete agreement between the French and the English poems in the order of the long series of incidents which they have in common. Chrétien lived in France, and it would surely be strange if any source accessible to him should have shown this close correspondence with a folk-tale current in Northwest England in respect to the very order of the numerous elements which are found in both poems. Let us glance rapidly, however, at Professor Griffith's discussion of the successive episodes that make up Sir Perceval of Galles. As all readers of Chrétien's Perceval will recollect, the poet begins his narrative with the meeting of his youthful hero and the knights in the forest where he has been reared in seclusion by his widowed mother. Only somewhat later on (ll. 415 ff.) do we learn from this lady of the circumstances under which she and her husband came to take refuge in this spot and of the cause of the latter's death....

Book English Gothic Literature

Download or read book English Gothic Literature written by Derek Brewer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1983-03-01 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The centuries between 1100 and 1500 were the crucible in which English language and literature, after the blow of the Norman Conquest, were reformed with results that affected all later times. The national language and literary culture were reconstructed influences. The medieval centuries present a fascinating success story of recovery, inventiveness and major achievement in all aspects of national life. In literature, lyric verse, narrative poetry, drama and discursive prose were all established in characteristic modes. In the present book many works are discussed, while such masterpieces as the works of Chaucer, Langland's Piers Plowman, the poems of the Gawain-poet and Malory's Morte Darthur are shown as the secular equivalent in words of the great medieval Gothic cathedrals. The forms of this varied body of literature had as characteristic a period style as contemporary Gothic art and architecture themselves. English literature may equally be described as Gothic, with assumptions and achievements which both lead to and contrast with later Neoclassical styles. Black and white photographic illustrations further the comparison and suggest some background. English Gothic literature derives from many interrelated social context - court, town, monastery and countryside. It was recorded in manuscripts that blend the qualities of popular speech and folktale with some of the more impersonal regular qualities of printing, that last of fundamental medieval inventions. In this new concept of the history of medieval literature, Derek Brewer illuminates the major literary works with detailed exposition to make them available to the reader coming fresh to them. At the same time he places them in the context of developing literacy and individualism, secular realism, romantic love, personal religion, etc., setting forth a coherent framework of cultural history which will challenge the interest of those who already know the period.
