Book Perceptions of the Leadership Capacity of School Counselors Related to School Climate Measures

Download or read book Perceptions of the Leadership Capacity of School Counselors Related to School Climate Measures written by Kandace K. DaCosta and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of the leadership capacity of school counselors related to school climate measures. Leadership capacity is defined as broad-based, skillful participation in the work of leadership involving other people within the school system (Lambert, 2000). In addition, the research examined the roles and responsibilities of school counselors and identified ways in which school counselors are currently contributing to school climate. Participants included K-12 school counselors and building level administrators employed by five districts in south central Pennsylvania. Thirty-two school counselors and 18 building level administrators participated in a researcher-designed online survey. Five school counselors and six building level administrators answered researcher designed interview questions. Both school counselors and building level administrators acknowledged the school counselor's role in contributing to a positive school climate by providing a safe and welcoming environment for students, fostering student/school counselor relationships, and collaborating with school staff and community. School counselors and building level administrators concurred that leadership opportunities exist for school counselors; however, the research indicated that there is a lack of articulation of the leadership opportunities, as well as a lack of relevant professional development opportunities to prepare school counselors for leadership roles. Building level administrators' perceptions largely aligned with the school counselors'; however, some discrepancies were identified regarding leadership roles and opportunities, as well as the lack of contributions outside of the contracted school day.

Book School Leaders Perceptions of School Counselors as Leaders as Part of the District Leadership Team and Impact on the District Wide Change Process

Download or read book School Leaders Perceptions of School Counselors as Leaders as Part of the District Leadership Team and Impact on the District Wide Change Process written by James S. Davis (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exploration focuses on school leaders' perceptions of school counselors as leaders and their involvement with district wide change. This study explores school counselorleadership, school counselors' role in district level change, and barriers to school counselor leadership. This is a qualitative study utilizing grounded theory design. Eighteen participants were interviewed that included schoolleaders and school counselors in urban, suburban, and rural school districts located in Upstate and Central New York. This study found that all school leaders in this study perceived school counselors as leaders. This study also found that school counselors are primarily involved in building level change and consulted with administration regarding district wide change as needed. Barriers to school counselors becoming leaders include internal, external, and organizational barriers. Barriers to school counselors serving on the district leadership team include membership in the teacher's union, little or no support from administration, and lack of flexibility due to amount of counselor job duties. This study concludes that school counselors would benefit from having more time in their schedules and flexibility in their role to function in a leadership capacity. School counselor leadership is determined more by the size of the school district than if the school is an urban, suburban, or rural school district. Finally, this study concludes that school counselors need to educate themselves and others on school counselor leadership. district level change, and barriers to leadership.

Book The Influence of Leadership on School Climate

Download or read book The Influence of Leadership on School Climate written by Raina Kor and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship between leadership characteristics and school climate. Through the online administration of two instruments, The Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) and The School-Level Environment Questionnaire (SLEQ), teacher and principal perceptions of leadership characteristics in five categories and school climate in eight categories, were collected and analyzed. The SLEQ included two forms, actual environment and preferred environment. Leadership skills, characteristics, and styles define the leader in a school building. The role of the school leader has become more complex, and expectations for leaders to create environments that support students, provide continuous learning for teachers, foster innovation, and meet achievement goals has become standard practice. School climate encompasses all of these expectations. Although the research on leadership and its characteristics is extensive, this study examined the research in the context of the needs of schools' today, identified how leadership influences school climate, and predicted the discrete leadership characteristics that support the growth of positive school climate.

Book The Psychology of School Climate

Download or read book The Psychology of School Climate written by Garry Wade McGiboney and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-06-22 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people have become impatient with school reform and school improvement efforts that fail to include school climate. The importance of a positive school climate is emerging in current research, not only as an essential component of school reform and school improvement, but also as a necessary framework for maintaining excellent schools and providing healthy and safe schools for all students. Research strongly suggests that educators and policy makers have a lot to learn about the importance of school climate for school safety and academic success. With the growing body of research regarding school climate, it is important to study the research and understand how the psychology of school climate and how the elements of school climate can be viewed from a population-based perspective, as well as understanding the impact of school climate on individual students. This review of school climate research includes hundreds of articles and research papers of different perspectives from around the world in numerous cultures. School climate is becoming a science of education and psychology that must be studied further in order to understand the dynamic nature of learning environments, to identify elements that support or threaten the learning environment, and to learn how to improve the conditions for learning in all schools.

Book Perceptions of Enlightened Leadership Related to School Climate

Download or read book Perceptions of Enlightened Leadership Related to School Climate written by Kathleen Lambe and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study identified school leaders who were perceived as having qualities of Enlightened Leadership based on principles found in A Spiritual Dimension of Leadership by Houston and Sokolow (2006). The climate of schools led by these individuals was also examined. The Enlightened Leadership Index (ELI) survey assessed both the perceptions of the principal as an enlightened leader and school climate. A comparison was then made to determine if a relationship existed. The Enlightened Leadership Index Interview (ELII) provided selected survey participants with an opportunity to support the ELI data. Surveys and interviews gathered data from five elementary schools and one intermediate school. Responses from 49 teacher participants were tabulated and analyzed. According to this study, it does not appear that perceptions of a principal as an enlightened leader necessarily have an effect on perceptions of school climate. Of the six principals studied, all had one or more weak enlightened qualities of leadership as per ELI data. However, interview data implied that one principal involved in the study exhibited all six qualities of Enlightened Leadership. Most schools had fairly positive climates, however, the interviewee from School D pointed to poor climate in the past. Though some connections may be cautiously made between areas of Enlightened Leadership to very specific climate statements, there does not appear to be any pattern in the data overall.

Book Leadership Style and School Climate

Download or read book Leadership Style and School Climate written by Adel Tajasom and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-08 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faced with criticisms of failing to adequately educate students, much research on educational reform in the school systems alludes to the role of principals in the educational process. Specifically, the principals have been identified as the most accountable key individuals responsible for creating conducive school climate. This book, therefore, highlights the relationship between high school teachers' perception of principal leadership style (Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire MLQ) and school climate (School Level Environment Questionnaire SLEQ) based on the theoretical framework derived from Theory of Leadership Style. Studying the perceptions of high school teachers in 17 urban secondary schools in Penang, Malaysia, the authors found that principals who are transformational leaders have an effect on school climate whereas transactional leaders only have an effect on one of the six dimensions of school climate. The in-depth analysis offers school boards and superintendents some insight into the style of principal leadership that may best fit the specific school climate needs in their respective school districts.

Book The Impact of Stephen Covey s The Leader in Me on School Climate in Grades K 6

Download or read book The Impact of Stephen Covey s The Leader in Me on School Climate in Grades K 6 written by Christopher E. Jahnke and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this mixed methodology study was to investigate the implementation of Stephen Covey's "The Leader in Me" as a character education program and its impact on school climate as it relates to student attendance, discipline, and promotion/retention rates in two suburban elementary schools in Pennsylvania. Data were then compared to teachers' and counselors' perceptions of the impact in these same areas of school climate. Thirty-three teachers and counselors participated in the study. Individual interviews with 12 participants provided additional insight of their personal perceptions. Results of the study indicated that teachers and counselors from both schools perceived a positive impact on implementing "The Leader in Me," especially as it relates to student discipline. The end of the year discipline data reported by each school to the state supported the teachers' and counselors' perceptions. The teachers' and counselors' perceptions of the impact on attendance and promotion/retention rates were not as conclusive and the data reported to the state for each of these categories indicated there were minimal improvements in each of these areas.

Book The Relationship Between School Climate and Reciprocal Trust in High Schools

Download or read book The Relationship Between School Climate and Reciprocal Trust in High Schools written by Robin Hayden Young and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research was designed to examine the relationship between reciprocal trust in schools and school climate. Trust in schools was measured as the trust perceptions of teachers, principals, and parents. School climate with its four dimensions-collegial leadership, teacher professionalism, academic press, and community engagement-was measured through the perceptions of teachers. By incorporating parent and principal perceptions, this study was intended to supplement they body of research linking trust and school climate. Surveys were used to collect the perceptions of teachers, principals and parents from a non-random sample of 11 high schools in the state of New York. A total of 11 principals (100%), 139 teachers (63%), and 150 parents (23%) returned usable surveys. All data were aggregated to the school level using the means from completed survey items. The levels of reciprocal trust and the school climate data were then statistically analyzed using the non-parametric Spearman's rho test. The major findings of this study indicated that of the three types of reciprocal trust examined, only two were significantly related to either school climate or one of its four dimensions. Reciprocal parent-teacher trust was signficantly related to community engagement, and reciprocal teacher-principal trust was significantly related to collegial leadership. Results indicated that none of the schools in the study had a high level of reciprocal trust regardless of the role groups considered. Both the findings of this study and those of previous research indicate that the more collegial the leadership practices of the principal, the more the principal and teachers trust one another, and the more open a school is to working collaboratively with parents and the community, the more parents and teachers trust one another. Based on these findings, it is recommended that school system leaders take into consideration the importance of not only community support, but also of the level of trust that exists between the school and the community.

Book Transformational Leadership and Its Relationship to School Climate and Student Achievement

Download or read book Transformational Leadership and Its Relationship to School Climate and Student Achievement written by Nancy J. Allen and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern school improvement processes have become collaborative efforts, encouraging administrators and teachers to examine the strengths and weaknesses of a campus in order to develop a plan for building on the strengths and improving the weaknesses. Three factors that are tied together in this process are campus leadership, school climate, and student achievement. As a result, this study examined the relationship between an elementary principal's transformational leadership qualities, the school climate, and the student achievement levels of the campus, based on information regarding the campus' STAAR scores. Survey data was collected from a purposeful sample of elementary school principals and a convenience sample of his or her respective teachers located in a small suburban school district in southeast Texas. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ-5X) was used to measure the degree to which a principal displays the factors of a transformational leader based on teacher perceptions and was used by the principals surveyed to self-assess. The School Climate Inventory-Revised (SCI-R) was used to measure teacher perceptions of school climate. Findings indicate a statistically significant positive relationship exists between the factors of transformational leadership and the dimensions of school climate; however, there was not a statistically significant positive relationship between the factors of transformational leadership and student achievement in mathematics. The only transformational leadership characteristic that had a statistically significant relationship on reading achievement was inspirational motivation. Additionally, there was no evidence of a statistically significant relationship between the dimensions of school climate and student achievement in mathematics. However, there was a statistically significant relationship between the school climate dimensions of order and involvement and reading achievement. When determining whether a relationship existed between the principal's perceptions of their own transformational leadership qualities and the teacher's perceptions of those same factors, only two out of the 25 correlations were found to be statistically significant.

Book School Counselors Systematic Perceptions of Change Agency Through Primal Leadership and Empowerment

Download or read book School Counselors Systematic Perceptions of Change Agency Through Primal Leadership and Empowerment written by Miriam Soler Fay and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this examination, 194 K-12 school counselors completed the Self-Perceptions of Effectiveness as Educational Change Agent (SPECA) survey. Analyses uncovered that Primal Leadership and personal power or empowerment both play a significant role in counselors' potential effectiveness to effect change regardless of gender or building level. Personal power or empowerment proved to make the greatest contribution towards change agency effectiveness. Results showed that counselors perceive having high indicators of emotionally intelligent Primal Leadership and adequate levels of empowerment with some important limitations pertaining to involvement in program policy. The study revealed counselors' priorities pertaining to factors of unobtrusive leadership and empowerment. Scores further specified that female counselors tend to exhibit higher self-confidence than male counselors to undertake change. However, male scores yielded stronger correlations and coefficients of determination, signifying that males may merge ability and strategy more often than females do. Additionally, results corroborated that females may be inclined to build effectiveness to lead change on relationship management, while males may value self-management and personal power combined. Analyses of variance showed that, with minor exceptions, counselors' perceptions do not differ significantly by building level. The study concluded emphasizing training as a primary change medium. A Model of Competence for Change Agency Effectiveness was proposed and recommended, compatible with the National Model for School Guidance Counseling Programs, with implications for training and evaluation.
