Book excerpt: School district leaders who have been well-prepared can positively impact student achievement in their school districts. In the area of special education, however, some superintendents appear to be less well-prepared for their role. Perhaps as a result, studies investigating superintendents’ roles and responsibilities in special education have revealed a focus primarily on the areas of budgeting and legal compliance when working with special education directors. While the responsibilities of the superintendent may be established in the eyes of the superintendent (Chaffin, 2013; Cope, 2002; Porter, 1999; Volpe, 2006), what is not well known is what special education directors perceive as the role of the superintendent in regards to special education (Volpe, 2006; Thompson & O’Brian, 2007). This study focused on the perceptions of special education directors on the role of superintendents in special education and the relationship between special education directors and superintendents. The study serves as an explorative qualitative study using grounded theory (Corbin & Strauss, 2015). Data was collected through interviews of special education directors and a review of publicly accessible documents. Participants were selected from currently-practicing special education directors in public school districts who have served in that capacity for at least two years. Major findings of this study suggest that self-perception of the role of special education directors is broader than what is revealed in current literature. The findings also support a number of roles for the superintendent in special education beyond finance and legal compliance and that special education directors perceive their relationship with the superintendent as both indirect and informal.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative descriptive case study was to examine special education teachers' perceptions of special education leadership roles. The study examined factors that encourage and discourage special education teachers from pursuing a special education leadership position and explored the depth of knowledge special education teachers had regarding the roles and responsibilities of the special education leader. Data were collected and analyzed from special education teachers representing three levels including elementary special education teachers, middle school special education teachers, and high school special education teachers. The results of this study indicated that special education teachers believed they possessed knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of special education leadership. The majority of special education teachers were not interested in pursuing a special education leadership position. The specific factors special education teachers believed may encourage other special education teachers in their pursuit of special education leadership positions were notably few. The specific factors special education teachers believed may discourage special education teachers from their pursuit of special education leadership positions all had common negative themes. In general, special education teachers did not have a positive view toward special education leadership roles.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate leadership perceptions of 30 leaders of special education: 10 administrators of special education, 10 principals, and 10 assistant principals. A Q-sort methodology is used to obtain and analyze participant rankings of 50 leadership statements representing instructional, distributed, and collaborative leadership. Research questions that guide this study include: 1) How are the leadership style statements ranked in relationship to participant roles?; 2) To what extent did the highest ranked leadership style component statements differ from the lowest ranked leadership items?; 3) How did the participants describe the rankings of the overall most and least important leadership statements regarding the work of a leader of special education?; 4) Are there any similarities or differences among leadership statement rankings in relationship to the participant clusters?; and 5) Are there any similarities or differences among leadership statement rankings in relationship to the participant clusters? Results revealed two factor groups, each described by a leadership profile reflecting demographic information and ratings of leadership style items. This study demonstrates the importance of leader development of multi-actor leadership styles in order to meet contemporary education demands. Further, this study proposes a revision of leadership domains currently considered to be most important for leaders of special education. This research will contribute to expanding current understanding of instructional, distributed, and collaborative leadership styles within the field of special education. Future research should be devoted to understanding factors that influence the use of multi-actor leadership styles by leaders of special education, and factors that enable development and implementation of multi-actor leadership.
