Book The Oxford Handbook of Political Communication

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Political Communication written by Kate Kenski and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-23 with total page 977 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its development shaped by the turmoil of the World Wars and suspicion of new technologies such as film and radio, political communication has become a hybrid field largely devoted to connecting the dots among political rhetoric, politicians and leaders, voters' opinions, and media exposure to better understand how any one aspect can affect the others. In The Oxford Handbook of Political Communication Kate Kenski and Kathleen Hall Jamieson bring together leading scholars, including founders of the field of political communication Elihu Katz, Jay Blumler, Doris Graber, Max McCombs, and Thomas Paterson,to review the major findings about subjects ranging from the effects of political advertising and debates and understandings and misunderstandings of agenda setting, framing, and cultivation to the changing contours of social media use in politics and the functions of the press in a democratic system. The essays in this volume reveal that political communication is a hybrid field with complex ancestry, permeable boundaries, and interests that overlap with those of related fields such as political sociology, public opinion, rhetoric, neuroscience, and the new hybrid on the quad, media psychology. This comprehensive review of the political communication literature is an indispensible reference for scholars and students interested in the study of how, why, when, and with what effect humans make sense of symbolic exchanges about sharing and shared power. The sixty-two chapters in The Oxford Handbook of Political Communication contain an overview of past scholarship while providing critical reflection of its relevance in a changing media landscape and offering agendas for future research and innovation.

Download or read book The Effects of Components of Source Credibility and Communication Content on Attitude Change written by Walter Weiss (psychologist.) and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major purpose of the study was to determine the separate and interactive effectiveness of source credibility on the acceptance of communication content that varied in attitudinal relevance. College students read one of two types of communications on the housing shortage in N.Y.C., under experimental conditions that factorially varied the communicator's perceived expertness and trustworthiness. The communications differed in whether or not policy recommendations were included in addition to factual assertions and a definition of the problems. The results are reported. (Author).

Book Involvement Credibility and the Use of Environmental Information Sources

Download or read book Involvement Credibility and the Use of Environmental Information Sources written by Sunae Jo and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mass communication scholars have always been concerned with the communication behavior of audience groups that undergird the effectiveness of communication efforts. The main assumption of this study is that the receiver's relationship to the content of a message will have an impact on the efficacy of a communication activity. Because audience perceptions of a source's credibility are crucial in efforts to change attitudes and behaviors, this study focuses on this important aspect. Perceptions of credibility in this research were treated not as an attribute of sources but as a relational concept, dependent upon a receiver's involvement with the message. That is, differences in receivers' involvement with a message or issue affect their perceptions of a source's credibility. This eventually leads to receivers' different preferences for information sources.

Book Attitudes and Opinions

Download or read book Attitudes and Opinions written by Stuart Oskamp and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2005-01-15 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Notable advances resulting from new research findings, measurement approaches, widespread uses of the Internet, and increasingly sophisticated approaches to sampling and polling, have stimulated a new generation of attitude scholars. This extensively revised edition captures this excitement, while remaining grounded in scholarly research. Attitudes and Opinions, 3/e maintains one of the main goals of the original edition--breadth of coverage. The book thoroughly reviews both implicit and explicit measures of attitudes, the structure and function of attitudes, the nature of public opinion and polling, attitude formation, communication of attitudes and opinions, and the relationship between attitudes and behaviors, as well as theories and research on attitude change. Over 2,000 references support the book's scientific integrity. The authors' second goal is to demonstrate the relevance of the topic to people's lives. Subsequently, the second part of the book examines many of the topics and research findings that are salient in the world today--political and international attitudes (including terrorism), voting behavior, racism and prejudice, sexism and gender roles, and environmental attitudes. This thoroughly revised new edition features: *an entirely new chapter on implicit measures attitudes; *a new chapter on environmental attitudes; *updated opinion poll data throughout the book; *additional material on time trends in attitudes about many issues; and *expanded, updated sections on international attitudes reflecting the events of 9/11 and the subsequent invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. Attitudes and Opinions' broad and interdisciplinary perspective makes this an ideal text in courses on attitudes, public opinion, survey research, or persuasion, taught in a variety of departments including psychology, communication, marketing, sociology, and political science.
