Book Perceptions of Sexual Harassment Training Received in the Military

Download or read book Perceptions of Sexual Harassment Training Received in the Military written by Thaddeus J. Clark and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study is to evaluate U.S. Army Reserve component soldiers' attitudes and perceptions of sexual harassment training received in the military. Sexual harassment is an issue that plagues organizations from conducting their missions. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 first prohibited discrimination based on an individual's sex. Since the ruling, American organizations have developed policies defining sexual harassment, and outlined the consequences of engaging in such behavior. Sexual harassment training is a means to combat the issue of sexual harassment in organizations. The scope of this study is to gain insight from soldiers and contribute to the body of knowledge concerning sexual harassment training in the U.S. Army Reserve in order to propose recommendations to improve military sexual harassment training programs. By utilizing the qualitative methodology, through the use of individual, in-depth interviews, soldiers' attitudes and perceptions concerning their experiences with sexual harassment training in the military can be revealed. Working to improve military sexual harassment training programs will help to heighten soldier's awareness and enhance sexual harassment prevention measures to allow military units to focus on their mission rather than the distraction of sexual harassment. Overall, the sampled soldiers perceive sexual harassment training in the U.S. Army Reserve as being beneficial and completely necessary to control sexual harassment in this work environment. Based on the results of the data from the interviews, soldiers identified numerous ways to improve the effectiveness of current U.S. Army Reserve sexual harassment training programs. Incorporating creative teaching tools such as case studies, scenarios, role play, movie clips, and guest speakers into the programs' constructs, will work to increase solders' attentiveness and maximize the lasting impact of the training on soldiers' attitudes and perceptions of sexual harassment.

Book A Quantitative Study Exploring Military Training of Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment During Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom

Download or read book A Quantitative Study Exploring Military Training of Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment During Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom written by Cassie Sorcelli and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract A Quantitative Study Exploring Military Training of Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom By Cassie Sorcelli Master of Social Work This study provided data from a self-designed questionnaire which explored perceptions about the military's training on sexual assault, sexual harassment, and knowledge of military sexual trauma via past and present services members (N=44). Data suggested that although training is being held, there is still room for improvement. Most respondents (70.5%) received resources on how to obtain assistance if they experienced sexual harassment or sexual assault while serving; with more than three quarters (77.3%) reporting they were provided instructions on how to report sexual harassment and sexual assault. The lowest score was for comprehensiveness of sexual assault training, with the highest for effectiveness of sexual harassment training. Overall, averages were in the medium range, leaving room for improvement in comprehensiveness and effectiveness of training. It would benefit the military and service members to improve the training comprehension, provide effective services for survivors, maintain confidentiality, and improve preventive measures which would reduce sexual assault and sexual harassment.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In response to several high-profile incidents of sexual misconduct by military training instructors (MTIs) during Basic Military Training (BMT), in 2012 the U.S. Air Force's Air Education and Training Command (AETC) asked RAND Project AIR FORCE to develop an integrated survey system to help address abuse and misconduct towad trainees in the BMT environment. Based on an extensive review of relevant materials--including internal AETC investigations of these incidents, Air Force and Department of Defense policies, and the scientific literature--trainee experiences and related reporting behaviors for the following abuse and misconduct categories: trainee bullying, maltreatment and maltraining, unprofessional relationships, sexual harassment, and unwanted sexual experiences. The survey also measures individual perceptions of the squadron climate and BMT feedback and support systems. The MTI survey assesses the extent to which MTIs were aware of trainees experiencing abuse, as well of their perceptions of the related squadron climate and MTI reporting behaviors. The MTI survey also includes a section on MTI quality of life, including job attitudes, the work environment, and job stressors. The report concludes with recommendations about survey administration, reporting the results, and additional areas for improvement to better track and monitor actual instances of and the potential for abuse and misconduct"--Cover page 4.

This book was released on 2018-09-01 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last few decades, research, activity, and funding has been devoted to improving the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine. In recent years the diversity of those participating in these fields, particularly the participation of women, has improved and there are significantly more women entering careers and studying science, engineering, and medicine than ever before. However, as women increasingly enter these fields they face biases and barriers and it is not surprising that sexual harassment is one of these barriers. Over thirty years the incidence of sexual harassment in different industries has held steady, yet now more women are in the workforce and in academia, and in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine (as students and faculty) and so more women are experiencing sexual harassment as they work and learn. Over the last several years, revelations of the sexual harassment experienced by women in the workplace and in academic settings have raised urgent questions about the specific impact of this discriminatory behavior on women and the extent to which it is limiting their careers. Sexual Harassment of Women explores the influence of sexual harassment in academia on the career advancement of women in the scientific, technical, and medical workforce. This report reviews the research on the extent to which women in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine are victimized by sexual harassment and examines the existing information on the extent to which sexual harassment in academia negatively impacts the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women pursuing scientific, engineering, technical, and medical careers. It also identifies and analyzes the policies, strategies and practices that have been the most successful in preventing and addressing sexual harassment in these settings.

Book Retention in the Military

Download or read book Retention in the Military written by Macie D. McKensey and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent introduction of women into the special forces of the United States military has reignited the debate on how women will integrate into these previously all male roles. Drawing on the Job-Demand-Control-Support (JDCS) model and focusing on the support aspect of this model, this study examines the role of sex discrimination and sexual harassment, two commonly experienced actions by members of a gender-homogeneous team, on voluntary retention. The author tests five hypotheses and three gender-related sub-hypothesis concerning the effects of sex discrimination and sexual harassment on retention via perceived organizational support and workplace satisfaction. Multilevel structural equation models were produced using data from the public use version of the 2012 Workplace and Gender Relations Survey of Active Members. Finding show there is no significant gender differences in the direct effects of sex discrimination and sexual harassment on retention. However, there is a gender difference in the indirect paths of sex via perceived organizational support and workplace satisfaction. This study informs the JDCS model by suggesting that perceived organizational support is constructed and influences job-related outcome differently for males and females.

Book Sexual Harassment Policies and Programs in the Militaries of TTCP Countries

Download or read book Sexual Harassment Policies and Programs in the Militaries of TTCP Countries written by Darlene R. Bennett and published by . This book was released on 1997-06-01 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis examines the policies, programs, and scope of sexual harassment in the United States Navy and the military forces in The Technical Cooperation Program (TTCP) countries, (United States, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and United Kingdom). It highlights the most effective approaches to eliminate sexual harassment and makes recommendations for improvement. Research was conducted on the information provided from all participating countries. This thesis assesses the background surrounding sexual harassment, including initial recognition, associated watershed events, and the role of women; reviews each country's national and military sexual harassment policies; describes sexual harassment training and associated programs, assessment groups, measurement instruments, and scope of sexual harassment; analyzes the common themes that emerge and the international highlights of the most effective programs; and provides recommendations. Several critical elements are highlighted in this study. These include the general approach taken by New Zealand and Canada; the Canadian Defence Force's training program and cultural change efforts; the U.S. Navy's prevention and command assessment program; and the Australian, Canadian, and New Zealand emphasis on a well-conducted investigation. The leading recommendation stresses the need for TTCP militaries to take the steps required to evoke a cultural change to affect the attitudes and perceptions of personnel.

Book Perceptions of Sexual Harassment and Sexual Assault

Download or read book Perceptions of Sexual Harassment and Sexual Assault written by Patricia L. Bouldin and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines gender differences among U.S. Navy officers in their perceptions of what constitutes sexual harassment and sexual assault. Additionally, the study explores possible reasons for these observed differences. The primary source of data is a survey administered to active-duty Navy officers at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in December 2009. Other sources include the Department of Defense survey of "Service Academy Gender Relations" (2008) and previous research on related topics. NPS survey results confirm that perceptions of sexual assault and sexual harassment differ by gender; further, these differences are amplified by other demographic factors. Male respondents tend to believe that sexual harassment and sexual assault are not a problem in the Navy largely because they have neither experienced nor witnessed such events. Although most female respondents believe that gender relations are better now than in the past, they view sexual harassment and sexual assault as a continuing problem. A majority of men and women agree that the Navy's current approach toward preventing sexual harassment and sexual assault can be improved. A number of respondents to the NPS survey suggest ways to redesign training, including use of testimony by victims. Several recommendations for further research are offered.
