Book excerpt: Over the last few decades, research, activity, and funding has been devoted to improving the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine. In recent years the diversity of those participating in these fields, particularly the participation of women, has improved and there are significantly more women entering careers and studying science, engineering, and medicine than ever before. However, as women increasingly enter these fields they face biases and barriers and it is not surprising that sexual harassment is one of these barriers. Over thirty years the incidence of sexual harassment in different industries has held steady, yet now more women are in the workforce and in academia, and in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine (as students and faculty) and so more women are experiencing sexual harassment as they work and learn. Over the last several years, revelations of the sexual harassment experienced by women in the workplace and in academic settings have raised urgent questions about the specific impact of this discriminatory behavior on women and the extent to which it is limiting their careers. Sexual Harassment of Women explores the influence of sexual harassment in academia on the career advancement of women in the scientific, technical, and medical workforce. This report reviews the research on the extent to which women in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine are victimized by sexual harassment and examines the existing information on the extent to which sexual harassment in academia negatively impacts the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women pursuing scientific, engineering, technical, and medical careers. It also identifies and analyzes the policies, strategies and practices that have been the most successful in preventing and addressing sexual harassment in these settings.

Book excerpt: Sexual violence, especially violence toward women of color, is pervasive within the United States and can result in many long-term health and psychological consequences. Drawing from theories of intersectionality, dehumanization, and prototypicality, the current research explores how people who share a marginalized group status on a single dimension with Black women (i.e., White women, Black men) judge interactions involving sexually harassing behavior. Consistent with predictions, Study 1 shows that White men and White women were less likely to identify sexual harassment against Black women (vs. White women) as harmful, especially when there was another salient identity (i.e., occupation) that blame can be attributed to. Further, perceptions of harm predicted target credibility, likelihood of sexual harassment, support for perpetrator punishment, and victim blaming. Study 2 showed that White men and Black men perceived less harm when women were strippers than servers, which predicted greater victim blaming. However, this effect was not moderated by target race. The practical and theoretical implications of these findings are discussed.

This briefs is designed for researchers, practitioners, and students concerned about violence prevention and who are interesting in bystander intervention as a promising prevention strategy. Connections between research and practice are the foundation of this briefs. The briefs addresses the following questions: What is the promise of a bystander approach to violence prevention? Where does it fit within the spectrum of sexual and relationship violence prevention? How do we expand theoretical models of helping behavior to the unique context of interpersonal violence? How can we bring in research from other areas of health behavior change and developmental research on violence to inform a broader bystander action model? It provides a new synthesis and model of bystander interaction. It outlines a strategic plan for new research and next steps in prevention practices.

Although commonly experienced, there is a large discrepancy between the number of actual cases of sexual harassment and the number of cases reported. Previous research has focused either on differing levels of authority, gender of the perpetrator and victim, or participant gender in perceptions of sexual harassment. This experiment investigated the impact of all three variables. Student participants were given a definition of sexual harassment, read a short scenario describing potentially harassing behavior perpetrated by a man or woman of differing authority levels (high or low) and rated the responsibility of both the "harasser" and "victim" for the behavior. Participants also completed a sexual harassment attitude scale. A 2x2x2 between-subjects MANCOVA (with sexual harassment attitudes and previous experience with sexual harassment entered as covariates) failed to find significant results. A 2x2x2x2 mixed ANCOVA (with "harassment status" (harasser vs. victim) as the within-subjects variable) found that harassers were blamed more regardless of harasser gender, harasser status, and gender of the participants. In addition, male harassers resulted in more blame overall. Implications, limitations, and potential research are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the use of bystander intervention training to address campus sexual violence has risen rapidly. More research is critically needed to guide the ongoing development and implementation of prevention efforts by campuses utilizing this relatively new approach. This investigation examined associations between college students' bystander intervention behavior and three key factors: (1) perceived peer norms supportive of sexual violence; (2) perceived campus administrative response to sexual violence; and (3) sense of campus community. Data from a sample of 2370 college students was analyzed using hierarchical linear regression to test both direct and moderated effects. Findings revealed that both peer norms supportive of sexual violence and perceptions of campus administrative response to sexual violence were significantly associated with bystander intervention. No significant direct or moderating effects related to sense of campus community were uncovered in this sample. Implications of this study include contributing to the current knowledge base about factors associated with bystander intervention behavior, and informing campus efforts to make bystander training programs more effective.

Book excerpt: Utilizing secondary data from the study, Rape Prevention through Bystander Education at a Northeastern State University, 2002-2004, the present study examined if rape myth acceptance is a predictor of perceived necessity for bystander intervention controlling for race, religious affiliation, sex, year in school, and income level. Other independent variables examined are previous sexual assault/rape or sexual harassment training and knowing a sexual assault victim. Using RW Connell's interpretations of the theory of hegemonic masculinity, paired with Foucault's theory of the Panopticon, this study examines the sociological effects of rape culture and rape myth acceptance on feelings towards victims and perceived necessity for intervention. This study further analyzes the deeper social psychological effects of the internalization of rape culture using Identity theory and Social structure and personality theories. Results indicated that having a higher level of rape myth acceptance led to significantly lower perceived necessity for intervention. Results also indicated that being male predicted lower perceived necessity for bystander intervention.

There is an implication that individuals who are bullied must have "asked for" this type of treatment, or deserved it. Sometimes, even the child who is bullied begins to internalize this idea. For many years, there has been a general acceptance and collective shrug when it comes to a child or adolescent with greater social capital or power pushing around a child perceived as subordinate. But bullying is not developmentally appropriate; it should not be considered a normal part of the typical social grouping that occurs throughout a child's life. Although bullying behavior endures through generations, the milieu is changing. Historically, bulling has occurred at school, the physical setting in which most of childhood is centered and the primary source for peer group formation. In recent years, however, the physical setting is not the only place bullying is occurring. Technology allows for an entirely new type of digital electronic aggression, cyberbullying, which takes place through chat rooms, instant messaging, social media, and other forms of digital electronic communication. Composition of peer groups, shifting demographics, changing societal norms, and modern technology are contextual factors that must be considered to understand and effectively react to bullying in the United States. Youth are embedded in multiple contexts and each of these contexts interacts with individual characteristics of youth in ways that either exacerbate or attenuate the association between these individual characteristics and bullying perpetration or victimization. Recognizing that bullying behavior is a major public health problem that demands the concerted and coordinated time and attention of parents, educators and school administrators, health care providers, policy makers, families, and others concerned with the care of children, this report evaluates the state of the science on biological and psychosocial consequences of peer victimization and the risk and protective factors that either increase or decrease peer victimization behavior and consequences.
