Book School Advisory Programs Impact on the Student teacher Relationship

Download or read book School Advisory Programs Impact on the Student teacher Relationship written by Robert R. Ruch and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative study was designed to discover teacher and student perceptions related to the effectiveness of planned activities and instruction as well as to determine the impact that advisory programs have on improving the effectiveness of the student-teacher relationship. The participants were middle school students as well as teachers of grades 6, 7, and 8 in a large, suburban middle school in a school district in southeastern Pennsylvania. This research examined the results based upon the responses of 75 middle school teachers who completed the online survey and 82 seventh and eighth grade students who completed the online survey. The researcher also interviewed 13 teachers and eight students and completed focus groups with a total of 32 students to further assess the teacher and student feelings related to the advisory period. Results of the study indicated over 80% of both groups, teachers and students, believed the advisory period is helpful in strengthening the student-teacher relationship. The advisory teachers viewed themselves and were viewed by students as adults who advisees can count on in the school. There was some differentiation between the perspectives of the students and the teachers in what made advisory effective. There was a large difference between the perspectives of the seventh grade students and the eighth grade students. The majority of eighth graders primarily viewed the advisory time as a time to get work done while most seventh graders viewed this allotted as a time to make connections with each other and the advisory teacher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advisory groups have played an essential role in improving the school climate and conditions for young adolescents in schools. How middle school decision makers go about the process of designing or re-designing an advisory program needs to be considered. A discussion is presented of the background information that helps define advisories. It describes some essential elements in the design of an advisory program, proposes strategies for planners to use in facilitating decision making, and explores possible future directions and alternative strategies for achieving the goals of advisory programs. Chapter 1 looks at the impetus and chronology of advisory programs. Chapter 2 presents a nomenclature to facilitate a discussion about advisory programs. The decision-making process described in Chapter 3 presents a card-sorting activity that allows the planner to articulate their preconceived notions about potential goals, activities, and outcomes of an advisory program. Chapter 4 suggests that students' need for personal and social guidance may be addressed in ways other than what has traditionally been called advisor/advisee. Considering alternative ways can enhance the processes of planning, collaborative decision making, and creative construction that can be the key to success for a program. (Contains 103 references.) Book Eighth Grade Transition to High School

Download or read book Eighth Grade Transition to High School written by Kristen Campbell-Wilder and published by ProQuest. This book was released on 2009 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the perceptions of eighth grade students and eighth and ninth grade teachers regarding academic, procedural, and social transition issues from middle school to high school. The research design was a multi-site, mixed methods case study of two suburban districts with single 6-8th grade middle schools feeding a single high school. Academic issues explored student concern about harder classes, homework, grades, more teachers, preparation for college, and preparation for life. Procedural issues included concerns about the size of the school, getting lost, getting to class on time, school rules, and expectations. Social issues covered included safety, sense of belonging, fitting in, bullying and freedom. The conceptual framework for this study was based on a study of elementary to middle school transition by Akos and Galassi (2004) which grouped transition issues into three components: academic, procedural and social. This study examined how these same issues are related to the transition at a secondary school level.

Book Middle School Advisory Programs

Download or read book Middle School Advisory Programs written by Susan Cvengros Mortensen and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive investigation on middle school advising was chiefly concerned with assessing and improving an advising program at a Seattle independent school. For the purose of gathering background information, the directors of six advising programs in the region were interviewed. Of primary interest was the history of each program's evolution, the prevailing program priorities, and the common expectations of advisors. Following these interviews, a detailed review of the focal advisory program was conducted. Meetings were held with the advisors of each grade level at a fifth through eighth grade middle school. These meetings were designed to ascertain developmental trends, isolate student needs, and determine advisory program priorities. The grade level workshops were followed by eight advisory group observations, eight interviews with advisors, and eight interviews with advisees. Finally, over 350 electronic surveys were conducted of families, advisors, and advisees. The interviews with program directors of other schools revealed a variety of program structures, styles, and priorities. The most common priorities of all programs were academic advocacy and community building. The interviews, observations, and surveys of the focal school revealed these same trends for priorities, and the survey data revealed that most constituents have a common understanding of what the advisor's role should be. While the data revealed that the majority of constituents are pleased with the advising at this school, there were dominant perceptions about what might improve overall program effectiveness. Some of the recommendations include establishing clear expectations, refining program purpose, improving program marketing, increasing advisor training, and providing advisors with ample tools for helping them manage unstructured time. The discussion includes the final summary of recommendations gleaned from the inquiry and the initial literature review.
