Book Gendered Perceptions of Safety and Danger on the College Campus

Download or read book Gendered Perceptions of Safety and Danger on the College Campus written by Shannon K. Jacobsen and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Utilizing a mixed methods design, this research examines the ways in which students' perceptions of safety and danger on the college campus vary and do not vary according to gender through the inclusion of three key components. The first focuses on individual perceptions of safety on campus, along with the ways in which students and other members of the campus community police their behaviors within the university setting to ensure that their personal space is not violated as they navigate to and from classes and campus events. This section relies on data from interviews and focus groups with 24 Mason students and staff, along with data from the observations of two open meetings of the Presidential Task Force during April 2011 which centered on issues regarding campus safety. The second component of this study examines the institutional presentation of safety issues and risks to the university community. This section includes a content analysis of five crime and safety documents released during the 2011-2012 academic year to the campus community from the University Police and administration. The final component consists of a nation-wide assessment of safety on college campuses, relying on the crime and security data from two nationally representative datasets including the Bureau of Justice Statistics' 2004-2005 Survey of Campus Law Enforcement Agencies and the U.S. Department of Education's 2006-2007 Campus Safety and Security Data Analysis Cutting Tool. This study builds on previous research on this topic by investigating the gendered (and not gendered) dimensions of fear, in addition to how such fears may operate to restrict women's participation on the university campus and beyond. Further, this research seeks to inform discussions at colleges and universities about how to make students feel safer as they pursue higher education.

Book Perceptions of Safety

Download or read book Perceptions of Safety written by Robert C. Trojanowicz and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data were collected during Flint, Michigan's Neighborhood Foot Patrol Program experiment and one year after foot patrol had become a citywide effort, so as to compare foot and motor patrol officers' perceptions of their safety. The study aimed to determine if a particular form of policing can help diffuse fear in law enforcement. All 22 foot patrol officers were interviewed, as were 47 randomly selected motorized officers, during January/February 1980, 1 year after the experiment began. The 1984 followup study was based upon interviews with all 64 foot patrol officers and 50 randomly selected motorized officers. In 1984, officers were asked the same five questions pertaining to safety issues and two additional questions. Officers' responses were ranked on a Likert-type scale. T-tests were used to compare responses. In 1980, foot patrol officers felt significantly safer in the conduct of their work than motorized officers. They cited familiarity with their beat neighborhoods and residents as being responsible for their sense of security. In 1984 also, foot patrol officers felt significantly safer than motorized officers for the same reason. Foot patrol officers had a significantly stronger feeling that citizens overestimated dangers in their community. Foot patrol officers were also more confident that citizens would help them if they were in trouble, believed more than motorized officers that their patrol areas were safer than the rest of Flint, and conducted fewer pat-downs. Foot patrol officers perceived themselves to be safer on their patrols than motorized officers regardless of age, race, gender, prior police experience, or military service. Tabular data and 17 footnotes are provided.

Book An Exploratory Analysis of University Safety Through an Examination of Students Self perceptions of Campus and Community Violence Levels and Student Learning Influences

Download or read book An Exploratory Analysis of University Safety Through an Examination of Students Self perceptions of Campus and Community Violence Levels and Student Learning Influences written by Michael J. Hollis and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore areas of research in regards to how students learn about violent crime on university campuses and what level of awareness they hold regarding their personal safety. A combination of databases was used to measure reported rates of violent crime on campus and in the community and these were compared with students' self-perceptions of safety and personal exposure to violence through an online survey distributed to 7,000 students at eight diverse universities throughout the United States. The survey determined that students were more aware of their personal safety than most researchers were giving them credit for. The students were largely dependent upon and trusting in their university to provide them with the information they needed to keep them safe. The university's internal and external communications messages (emails and news media coverage) were a large factor in determining how safe a student felt. Overall, there were few differences in perceptions of safety from demographics (except year of schooling). There was however strong consistencies in perceptions of universities per university, suggesting that the university itself is actually the greatest factor determining students' self-perceptions of safety and that the university's safety perception was largely determined by media coverage. The university proved such a strong factor that it even outweighed a students' personal experience with violence as a key factor in how safe a student felt. I believe that this exploratory study now indicates that future research in the field should focus on universities' safety images and whether or not this is making students feel safe or unsafe.
