Book Perceptions of PETE Students about Boys and Girls Participation in Elementary and High School Physical Education

Download or read book Perceptions of PETE Students about Boys and Girls Participation in Elementary and High School Physical Education written by Michael Cicchillitti and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Scholars have advocated the need to explore the nature and role of teacher beliefs in teacher education (O'Sullivan, 1996, 2003; Wilson & Berne, 1999; Zeichner, 1999) as they can influence teacher behaviour (Pajares, 1992). Unfortunately, research has shown that many in-service physical education (PE) teachers display gender-biased behaviours, beliefs and practices when interacting with students in a PE setting (Davis, 2003), which in turn, may affect students' participation in PE. However, few studies have investigated these issues from a physical education teacher education (PETE) student belief perspective. This qualitative case study explored how PETE students perceived the participation of girls and boys in PE at the elementary and high school level. Additionally, it attempted to identify any gender-biased beliefs that PETE students may hold about girls' and boys' participation in PE. The PETE students were six females and six males from the same university PETE program in Eastern Canada. Guided by the theory of occupational socialization (Lawson, 1983a, 1983b), data were collected through interviews, questionnaires and checklists. Thematic analyses were performed on verbatim transcriptions of interviews. Four themes were generated from the data: PE participation, PE activity preferences, experiences before PETE and experiences during PETE. The results revealed that female and male PETE students held both similar and different views towards girls' and boys' participation in elementary and high school PE. Additionally, some strong gender-role stereotypes emerged from their discussions. Training in qualitative methods, pilot work, and researcher reflexivity were employed to establish trustworthiness. Initial findings from this study may provide teacher educators with a deeper understanding of how some PETE students view the participation of girls and boys in PE. " --

Book Attitudes and Perceptions toward Physical Education A Study in Secondary School Students

Download or read book Attitudes and Perceptions toward Physical Education A Study in Secondary School Students written by Rolf Kretschmann and published by Anchor Academic Publishing (aap_verlag). This book was released on 2015-08-13 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical education teaching and learning efforts obviously target the student. Like parents, teachers, administrators and any other directly or indirectly involved parties, students do have opinions based on their experience on their respective physical education classes and physical education in general. These opinions, or so-called attitudes, are important to research due to their potential of giving insight to the learner’s perspective, which may also serve as an authentic feedback from the student. This study investigated German secondary school students’ attitudes toward physical education. Results have the intention to reveal what attitudes towards physical education German students have and which factors influence these attitudes. The study sample contained students from the different school types Gymnasium, Realschule, and Haupt-/Werkrealschule. The students were surveyed via questionnaire that was developed based on validated research instruments from prior studies in the field. Data was analyzed integrating independent variables such as students' gender, physical education grade, grade point average, body mass index, socioeconomic status, type of school, citizenship, and the exercise and physical activity behavior of students, their parents and their peers.

Book Girls Gender and Physical Education

Download or read book Girls Gender and Physical Education written by Kimberly L. Oliver and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-24 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this powerfully argued and progressive study, Kimberly Oliver and David Kirk call for a radical reconstruction of the teaching of physical education for girls. Despite forty years of theorization and practical intervention, girls are still disengaging from physical education, dropping out of physical activity, and suffering negative consequences in terms of their health and well-being as a result. This book challenges the conventional narrative that girls are somehow to blame for this disengagement, and instead identifies important new ways of working with girls, developing a new pedagogical model for ‘girl-friendly’ physical education. The book locates our understanding of the experiences of girls in physical education in the broader context of young people’s multifaceted engagements with popular physical culture. Adopting an activist perspective, it outlines a programme of action informed by principled pragmatism and based on four critical elements: student-centred pedagogy; critical study of embodiment; inquiry-based physical education centred-in-action, and listening and responding to girls over time. It explores the implications of this new thinking for teaching, research, PETE and policy, and outlines a future agenda for work in this area. Offering a profound theoretical critique of contemporary research and practice, as well as a new programme of action, Girls, Gender and Physical Education is essential reading for all researchers, advanced students and practitioners with an interest in the issues of gender, equity and inclusion in physical education.

Book Just Do It Do Perceptions of Sports Clothing Influence Participation in Physical Education and Sport

Download or read book Just Do It Do Perceptions of Sports Clothing Influence Participation in Physical Education and Sport written by Lauren Underdown and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study considered the participation inequality between girls and boys, referring to girls that are less active than boys in physical education (PE) and sport (Women in Sport, 2019). This research aimed to understand the perceptions of secondary school girls (age 14-16) PE and sports kits, and how they directly affect their participation in PE and individual sports. The study of the impact of sports and PE kit holds a strong relevancy in society recently, due to elite sportswomen contesting their kit regulations (Kemp, 2021; Tomas, 2021; Anstiss, 2021; Howard, 2021; Buchanan, 2021). In turn, the data gathered around girl’s perceptions of kit, media and the impact on participation will determine alternatives to encourage girls into PE and sport. An electronic qualitative questionnaire was used to gather data from a total of 44 girls aged between 14 and 16 from a comprehensive secondary school. The intent of the questionnaire was designed to answer the research questions: What is the perception of girl’s PE/ sports kit compared to boys? What impact does school sport/ PE kit have on the participation levels of girls in PE and extracurricular sport? The findings generated the apparent themes of: gender ideology, style of clothing, sexualisation, PE kits influence on participation and professional sports kits influence on participation. The majority of data coincided with current literature, concluding that sports kits can impact girls’ participation due to the societies ideals of what women should act and dress like. That being said, by creating a range of acceptable clothing to provide a ‘freedom of choice’ the participation levels of girls could rise.

Book Exploration of the Factors that Shape PETE Students Perceptions Of and Capacity to Implement Innovative Physical Education Teaching Approaches

Download or read book Exploration of the Factors that Shape PETE Students Perceptions Of and Capacity to Implement Innovative Physical Education Teaching Approaches written by Jennie Garnham and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For some teenagers, particularly girls, Physical Education (PE) holds their only prospect of participating in physical activity as many drop out of alternative forms in the middle years. This "dropout" is a possible consequence of PE teachers "sticking with established patterns" (Giddens, 1991, p. 73). Although education literature advocates a range of pedagogical processes to meet individual students' needs, PE Teacher Education (PETE) students tend to cling to familiarity and teachers revert to teaching as they were taught. Why Australian PETE student favour traditional teaching approaches over more innovative approaches is unclear, as limited research of similar cohorts exists. The objective of this research was to understand factors that shape PETE students' teaching beliefs and practices, particularly their perceptions of, and capacity to implement innovative PE teaching approaches." -- Taken from abstract.
