Book Perceptions of Parents of High School aged Students with Down Syndrome Regarding School sponsored Extracurricular Sport Programs

Download or read book Perceptions of Parents of High School aged Students with Down Syndrome Regarding School sponsored Extracurricular Sport Programs written by Korey Kleinhans and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like all students, those with disabilities are recommended to be physically active for 60 minutes a day, at least three days week. However, few students with disabilities (SWD) achieve this level of activity in school or outside of school. Through school-sponsored extracurricular sport (SSES), SWD can engage in more physical activity (PA). There is minimal research on parent perceptions of SSES for high school-aged SWD and how these programs impact lives. This study examined parent perceptions of SSES for high school-aged students with Down syndrome (DS). Questions included demographics, ranking benefits, why students are or are not involved in SSES, reasons for involvement or lack of involvement in SSES, and parent perceptions regarding SSES programs. An online survey was used to collect data from 26 parents of students with DS. Results indicated that parents of high-school aged students with DS wanted SSES programs their child's school district to remain physically active in a social setting. Also, the results revealed that parents want their children to gain self-confidence and become more social through a physically active environment created by SSES.

Download or read book Parent Perceptions of Extracurricular Sport Programs for High School Students with Disabilities written by Quinton D. White and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although federal laws require equal opportunities for all students, few high school students with disabilities (SWD) participate in school-sponsored extracurricular sport. Recently, more school-sponsored adapted sport (SSAS) programs have been developed. Because so many of these programs are newly developed, there is minimal research on their effects on SWD as reported by their parents. This study examined parent perceptions of factors related to participation in SSAS. An online survey was used to collect data throughout the U.S. from parents of SWD. Perceptions were examined through inquiries into demographics, degree of satisfaction with SSAS programming, and degree of importance placed by parents of their child participating in SSAS. Results indicated that parents of high school-aged SWD wanted SSAS programs in their child's school district. Parents indicated that SSAS participation was extremely important for their child and social interactions among peers. Only 62% of parents reported that SSAS was listed on their child's IEP. A total 67.4% of parents felt SSAS participation was important for their child. Emotional/Social skills was ranked the highest benefit of SSAS participation compared to physical fitness and cognitive development.

Book Parental Support for Students Who Participate in High School Athletics

Download or read book Parental Support for Students Who Participate in High School Athletics written by Daniel Ming Lui To and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This mixed method study explored student athletes' perception of parental influence in their high school athletic endeavours and how this perceived influence affected their self efficacy and academic success. The quantitative data was derived from surveys that gauged student perceived parental involvement, self efficacy and academic success in two high schools in a large metropolitan school district in British Columbia. One of the schools was a school composed primarily of students of mid to high social economic status while the other was designated an inner-city school. The qualitative focus group consisted 10 athletes from each of the schools - a male and female from each grade - discussing students' feelings about perceived parental involvement and how it affected their self-efficacy and academic success. The findings showed that all of the student athletes - regardless of which school they attended - perceived that their parents were involved in their high school athletic careers. This perceived parental influence did not, however, substantially influence their self-efficacy or academic success. Student athletes did feel increased membership when part of a high school athletic team and the interactions with their peer group and positive role models is linked to engagement in school, stronger feelings of self-worth, and academic success. This study showed that perceived parental influence, while likely a positive support for students, had very little effect on the students' perception about themselves or their academic success.

Book Coaches Perceived Benefits of School sponsored Adapted Sport for Students with Disabilities

Download or read book Coaches Perceived Benefits of School sponsored Adapted Sport for Students with Disabilities written by Cadi Baldwin and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although laws require equal opportunities for all students, few students with disabilities (SWD) participate in school-sponsored extracurricular sport compared to nondisabled peers. Recently, more school-sponsored adapted sport (AS) programs have started around the country. Due to recent development there is minimal research on AS and the effects on SWD. This study examined coaches' perceived benefits of participation in AS. Questions included demographics, rating and ranking of benefits, and questions on coaching efficacy. Paired sample t-tests found a significant difference in social skills compared to other benefit categories. Personal skills and PA/fitness had significant differences compared to sport-specific skills, but not significantly different from each other. Triangulation of an opened ended question found similar results. Social skills were perceived more important than all other benefit categories. A one-way ANOV A found no significant difference in the rating of benefits based on coaches' gender. Multiple regressions found that motivation coaching efficacy had a significant impact on social skills, PA/fitness, and sport-specific skills. Game strategy coaching efficacy had a significant effect on sport-specific and personal skills. Multiple regressions found that as coaches gained more experience they valued social skill and PA/fitness more. Coaching experience did not affect coaches' ratings of sport-specific or personal skills.

Book Parent Goals for School sponsored Adapted Participation for Students with Disabilities

Download or read book Parent Goals for School sponsored Adapted Participation for Students with Disabilities written by Steven K. Holland and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School-sponsored adapted sport (AS) programs are increasing in school districts. With recent clarifications of legislation regarding extracurricular activities for students with disabilities (SWD), more schools are offering programs for all students. However, limited research exists regarding various aspects of school-sponsored AS. The purpose of this study was to examine parent goals for their child's participation in school-sponsored AS. The study aimed to provide understanding of social, physical activity/fitness, and sport- specific goal themes of participating in AS. A survey was sent to parents to gather information. Paired sample t-tests found significant differences between social skill and sport-specific skill goals and physical activity/fitness and sport-specific skill goals, but no difference between social skill and physical activity/fitness goals. There were no significance differences in goal themes by disability. Paired sample t-tests indicated that current parent goal theme scores were significantly higher than at the beginning of the child's AS career. In addition, there were significantly higher scores for social sldll and physical activity/fitness goals for SWD, but significantly higher scores for sport-specific skill goals for children without disabilities. Results indicate that parents may have a holistic view or approach to AS participation. More research is necessary to further analyze parent goals.

Book Adult Perceptions of Student Involvement in High School Athletics

Download or read book Adult Perceptions of Student Involvement in High School Athletics written by William Alexander Laird and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this ethnographic case study was to explore and investigate the adult perceptions of the influence or impact that student involvement in high school athletics has on student engagement and student success. Due to the fact that funding for education in California is tied to the state economy, it is continually susceptible to periods of economic boom as well as times of economic recession. The result is that educational leaders have to continually make decisions about what programs to cut or to continue to fund. In times of economic crisis, there is a documented tendency for schools across the nation to cut extracurricular programs in order to sustain the academic curricular programs. This study examines adult perceptions regarding the impact that they believe athletic involvement ultimately has on student engagement and student success in a secondary setting. Through a focus group with parents, a staff survey and semi-structured interviews with staff members, this study explored adult perceptions regarding the impact that athletics has on overall student engagement and success. Findings include the importance of athletics in providing “life lessons” and in teaching xi students skills that cannot be taught as easily, if at all, in the classroom; the importance of athletics in providing a “sense of belonging” or “being a part of a team”; and the role that athletic involvement plays in providing motivation for students to be academically more engaged and successful.

Book Athletic Directors Perceptions Regarding the Impact of Sport Specialization on High School Student athletes

Download or read book Athletic Directors Perceptions Regarding the Impact of Sport Specialization on High School Student athletes written by Branden M. Lippy and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative research study explored public and non-public high school athletic directors' perception regarding the impact of sport specialization on high school student-athletes. This study was conducted with 30 high schools across the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association's District III region. Results were gathered by using an online survey, interviews, and a review of athletic department coaching handbooks, mission statements, and any school board policies relating to sport specialization, sharing of student-athletes, sharing of facilities, and multiple-sport participation. Thirty athletic directors completed the survey and seven were then interviewed. The results from this study indicated that the majority of athletic directors perceived the disadvantages of sport specialization exceeded the advantages for high school student-athletes. While most athletic directors agreed that there is some necessity to specialize to increase skill ability, most also agreed that specializing in one sport provides a greater negative impact than positive impact on high school student-athletes. Athletic directors perceived several factors as critical components in a student-athlete's decision to specialize: opportunities for student-athletes to participate in sports outside of their school district (travel and club teams); pressure from coaches and parents/guardians; the fear of not making a team; and student-athletes' and parents/guardians' belief that specialization helps to obtain a college scholarship. An overwhelming number of participants agreed that playing multiple sports is an important aspect of the high school student-athlete experience; that central administration supports multiple sport athletes; and that they do not encourage student-athletes to specialize during childhood/adolescence.
