Book Community Colleges as Cultural Texts

Download or read book Community Colleges as Cultural Texts written by Kathleen M. Shaw and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1999-09-02 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Community colleges are positioned to play a critical role in the process of upward mobility in American society. Yet despite the "open door" accessibility of these institutions, the question remains as to whether or not community colleges enhance the social mobility of working class and minority students. The contradictory and often paradoxical nature of research on community colleges suggests that making generalizations about the sector as a whole is perhaps misguided. This book takes an important step toward developing a more nuanced understanding of the rich and varied cultures inherent in community colleges. The contributors approach this task by examining community colleges as "cultural texts," using critical qualitative frameworks to address the question of whether, and how, community colleges confront the challenges of diversity and provide real opportunities for upward mobility. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Community colleges are under intense pressure to change in response to shifts in an increasingly complex environment. Stakeholders are placing simultaneously contradictory demands on colleges for more and better service, increased accountability, and more efficient use of resources in order to get the most from colleges in tough economic times. These demands have contributed to cultural fragmentation in community colleges as staff are pulled in competing directions by events beyond their control. The upshot is a circumstance in which leaders are finding that culture is perhaps the most powerful element affecting organizational performance and change. The old saw “culture eats strategy for breakfast’ epitomizes the importance of culture as a means for enhancing the long-term viability of an organization. This book provides fresh analysis of organizational culture in the community college context with a critical examination of the relationship between organizational culture and change. Readers will benefit from frank advice with insights to drive change by transforming and leveraging culture to shape the future of community colleges.

Book Perspectives of Leadership Competencies by Multi campus Community College Leaders

Download or read book Perspectives of Leadership Competencies by Multi campus Community College Leaders written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative study explores the unique characteristics of a multi-campus community college system and how the organizational structure and associated operating norms can impact the perception and execution of critical leadership competencies. To date, limited research has addressed the unique nature of the multi-campus environment. The data from this exploratory study support and expand on the findings of existing research. The significance of the study is that the increased need and demand for education and vocational training at the community colleges is colliding with a projected shortage of leaders. Because of their wide-ranging missions, different populations served, and the size of the institutions, it is understood that not all community colleges are the same. While generalization in leadership development plans cannot be avoided to some extent, one size does not fit all. In order to increase the ability to prepare future leaders for growth and success in a particular environment, individual districts need to become self-reflective and purposeful in determining how to best address the needs within their own system. This research offers insight into that quest by offering perspectives of how multi-campus community college structures impact the mid-level leader's perception and execution of the American Association of Community Colleges competencies. Specifically, the investigation identified the characteristics of those competencies that are unique to the multi-campus environment. Determining how current and past leaders perceive the competencies and how to best execute those skills for effective leadership in their respective organizational structure will enable leadership development programs to more accurately support efforts to ensure that future community college administrators meet the challenges they will predictably face.

Book Perceptions of Organizational Culture and Organizational Change at a Hispanic Serving Institution

Download or read book Perceptions of Organizational Culture and Organizational Change at a Hispanic Serving Institution written by Tava Michelle Bingham and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to understand how faculty, staff, and administrators at a newly designated Hispanic Serving Institution perceived the organizational culture and organizational change process. Hispanic Serving Institutions are a quickly growing institutional type. This qualitative single-institution case study sought to understand how faculty, staff, and administrators at a HSI perceived the organizational culture and the organizational change process as a newly designated HSI. Twenty employees who were classified as faculty, staff, or administrators participated in individual interviews where they were asked to share their knowledge and understanding of the HSI designation and how they believed the designation was being perceived by individuals at the institution as well as how they believed the designation impacted the work that is being done on campus. During the data analysis process, four themes were identified: 1) Existing Diversity, 2) Awareness to Action, 3) Institutional Culture, and 4) Funding. These themes provided insight on recommendations for other institutions seeking the HSI designation as well as recommendations for future research initiatives related to HSIs and the organizational change process.

Book A Multi Site Case Study of the Alignment of Institutional Change Strategies and Culture for Guided Pathways Reform Implementation in California Community Colleges

Download or read book A Multi Site Case Study of the Alignment of Institutional Change Strategies and Culture for Guided Pathways Reform Implementation in California Community Colleges written by Jeffrey D. Archibald and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The guided pathways reform movement promises to redesign community colleges to improve student achievement by restructuring students' journeys through an institution. As colleges implement these reforms, they must engage an overworked faculty fatigued by change initiatives that have been implemented with varying degrees of faculty participation and success. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the alignment between the strategies used to implement guided pathways-based organizational change and faculty engagement in guided pathways reform initiatives within the organizational culture of two California community colleges with the goal to understand the role of organizational culture in transformational change and identify best practices in faculty engagement. This study was guided by an overarching research question and two subquestions. The overarching research question was: How has the alignment of organizational change strategies and the organizational culture of two California community colleges selected to participate in the national implementation of guided pathways influenced faculty participation in the reforms and the success of the implementation? The subquestions were: 1. How have the community colleges involved their faculty members in the organizational change initiative? 2. How have the community colleges' organizational strategies to implement guided pathways-based change aligned with their organizational cultures? Data were collected using one-on-one, semi-structured interviews, artifact analysis, and observations. The findings derived from analysis of the two cases included: (a) the design of the implementation had a significant impact on the process, (b) cultural factors at each site strongly impacted the implementation, (c) resistance to change emerged at each campus, (d) centering of the student experience was crucial to advancing implementation, and (e) building and sustaining momentum was important for each college. The study found that both cases utilized implementation strategies for guided pathways that were congruent with their organizational cultures and encouraged faculty participation. The study confirmed that transformational change such as guided pathways that seeks to reform community colleges requires significant faculty participation and leadership to have any chance of success. Keywords: guided pathways, community college, organizational culture, organizational change, faculty

Book The Influence of Organizational Subcultures on Leaders Perceptions of Planned Organizational Change at a Community College

Download or read book The Influence of Organizational Subcultures on Leaders Perceptions of Planned Organizational Change at a Community College written by Christopher Cummings and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organizational theorists have argued that managing change without addressing organizational culture will likely fail; a strong organizational culture is often regarded as a cohesive force. However, a feature of all mature organizations is the presence of subcultures (Schein, 2010), which can be destructive in organizations where there is a lack of congruence between these subcultures and the wider organizational culture. This case study research explored the influence of organizational subcultures on leaders' perception of planned organizational change in a community college located in the Southwestern United States. Utilizing Schein's (2010) three generic subcultures (operating, engineering, and executive), the study explored (a) whether or not variations in leadership perceptions of the influence of organizational culture on organizational change resulted in different experiences and responses and (b) the implications for the management of change.
