Book An Investigation Into the Perceptions Held by K12 Muslim Female Islamic School Teachers in the United States of School Leadership Practices and Their Effects on School Climate and School Efficacy

Download or read book An Investigation Into the Perceptions Held by K12 Muslim Female Islamic School Teachers in the United States of School Leadership Practices and Their Effects on School Climate and School Efficacy written by Sofia Tanweer Hussain and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dynamic era of change the educational landscape in North America offers parents a plethora of choices when it comes to educating their children. Muslim American parents are no exception to this phenomenon, specifically after the world was shaken on September 11th, 2001. Muslim professionals saw an opening in the market, and so Islamic schools proliferated through the country. A priori studies on Islamic schools have focused on the perceptions held by school leaders of the effects of their leadership style on school climate; the gap in literature has provided the impetus for this research. As such, this qualitative, Interpretative Phenomenological study uses servant leadership theory, school climate theory, and aligns these with Islamic leadership theory to create a lens, to describe the understandings and perceptions held by Islamic school teachers of their experiences with school leadership, and its perceived effects on school climate. The results from this study indicate a few salient and noteworthy points; first, the culture of nepotism in Islamic schools indicates that employees may not always be treated equally; next, teachers confirmed that their state of mind is what led to the positive climate that they experienced. Moreover, they reported a lack of transparency between leaders and stakeholders. A lack of cultural competency as well as a deficiency in academic proficiency regarding policy and curriculum meant that leaders were ill prepared to deal with common issues. Participants also reported the common use of religious guilt and most prominently, the implementation of a dictatorship under the guise of the Islamic shura Ideology, which promotes mutual consultation and honors the voice of subordinates. The findings of this study will provide Islamic school organizations with a foundation for assessing the role of principal leadership, specifically with regards to its effect on school climate. Furthermore, this research will enable schools to modify credentialing and continued professional development requirements for their principals, as well supporting ongoing research regarding leadership in Islamic schools. Cultural constraints make it challenging for many ethnic minority individuals (particularly women) to speak openly about disparities that they deal with on a daily basis; to some this is considered a form of disloyalty or treachery, to which end, this research will provide the stimulus for dialogue amongst Islamic school boards and teachers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been a sizable amount of research on how 9/11 has had an impact on public school communities, including students, teachers, and parents of Muslim identity. There is however a lack of study on Muslim principals of public schools. This book examines the lived experiences of American Muslim principals who serve in public schools post-9/11 to determine whether global events, political discourse, and the media coverage of Islam and Muslims have affected their leadership and spirituality. Such a study is intended to help readers to gain an understanding of the adversities that American Muslim principals have experienced post-9/11 and how to address these adversities, particularly through decisions about educational policy and district leadership.

Book Exploring Indonesian Principals Leadership Practices in Islamic based Senior High Schools Madrasah Aliyahs

Download or read book Exploring Indonesian Principals Leadership Practices in Islamic based Senior High Schools Madrasah Aliyahs written by Kultsum Ummi and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research explores the ways in which school principals' leadership practices address challenges and develop the performance of Madrasah Aliyah (Islamic-based senior high schools) in Indonesia. Islamic-based schools are significant educational institutions since they provide Islamic education to the people of Indonesia, which is a predominantly Muslim nation. However, the principals face substantial challenges, such as school infrastructure and learning facilities, finances, leadership, teachers' professional development, and community engagement. As the senior leader in a madrasah, the role of principal is significant. Principals are catalysts for change among staff, students, and other stakeholders. The overarching question of this study is: How do principals in Madrasah Aliyahs address challenges and enhance their schools' performance? The first sub-question is: What are the strategies implemented by principals to manage Madrasah Aliyahs and address the challenges? The second sub-question is: What leadership practices are implemented by principals to develop principal-teachers' engagement, and principal-community engagement? This research study examines the perspectives of leaders and teachers in Madrasah Aliyahs and investigates the school environment by observing madrasah facilities and infrastructure. The research is significant in fulfilling the gap identified in the literature regarding leadership practices, especially in the context of Indonesian Islamic schools. This study also provides an in-depth analysis of indigenous leadership practices in leading Islamic-based schools, from the perspectives of principals and teachers. A multiple case study was conducted in two areas of Indonesia: South Tangerang and Bekasi. A qualitative approach to data collection and thematic analysis was used. The primary method of data collection was in-depth interviews and observation. This method provided opportunities for seven Madrasah Aliyahs with eight participants from each school (56 participants in total) to share and discuss their experiences, opinions, and contributions to their schools' performance and leadership practices. The participants consisted of a principal, a deputy principal of curriculum affairs, a deputy principal of administration and finance, and a deputy principal of student affairs, as well as two permanent and two honorarium teachers. Interviews were conducted in Bahasa Indonesia by the researcher, and the transcripts were translated into English, by Indonesian-speaking academics, for analysis. A manual process of cutting and pasting (Basit, 2010) was used to help data coding. Major findings reveal three classifications of Madrasah Aliyahs: developed, emerging, and challenging schools. The classification is based on four factors, including school finance, infrastructure and facilities, leadership approach, and community engagement. A predominance of Islamic values and the uniqueness of Indonesian cultures shed light on the indigenous leadership practices of catalytic, servant, and kinship leadership. Catalytic leaders enact their leadership to recognise opportunities that have value and mobilise stakeholders to collaborate effectively and productively. In this study, a school principal who is a catalytic leader is described as a change agent, entrepreneur, collaborator, mediator, and buffer. The primary principle of servant leadership is demonstrated by leaders who provide service and tend to guide followers to improve their performance. In the context of Madrasah Aliyahs in Indonesia, some principals displayed a servant leadership approach through offering stewardship and sympathy, while being a listener, mentor, and friend. In kinship leadership, a leader creates kin-based relationships with their followers, as well as a sense of unity, by developing equality among members in an organisation. The findings of this study show that principals in Madrasah Aliyahs unite their members by showing themselves as role models and father figures, and by being trustworthy and humble. These research findings reveal that community engagement influences school performance. For instance, well-educated and wealthy families that are interested in acquiring religious knowledge are often found in communities around a developed school. However, low socio-economic status (SES) families that lack motivation for learning about religion are more common in the communities around challenging schools. Finally, this research contributes insight into leadership development, school improvement, and community engagement in Madrasah Aliyahs. The study has potential to contribute to the academic discourse on indigenous leadership in the Indonesian school context. Catalytic leadership can lead to the improvement of school performance. Servant leadership helps to empower high-quality school staff. Kinship leadership strengthens the emotional relationships among members in the school.

Book Education Leadership and Islam

Download or read book Education Leadership and Islam written by Saeeda Shah and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educational institutions are undergoing complex and sensitive changes in the context of immigration, international mobility, globalisation, and shifting economic scenarios, making highly challenging demands on educational leaders. Leadership is increasingly being perceived and theorised as pivotal to students’ achievement and institutional performance. In this book, Saeeda Shah considers educational leadership from an Islamic perspective to debate theoretical positions underpinned by Islamic texts and teachings, and the resulting conceptualisations and interpretations. While educational leadership literature and research have flourished in recent years, this is predominantly informed by Western ideologies, concepts, theories and practices. Education, Leadership and Islam focuses on contemporary educational settings and practices, drawing on research and empirical evidence from multicultural contexts in order to enrich theory and inform policy and practice in relevant frameworks, particularly in relation to the growing Muslim population in the West. Chapters also discuss gender in Islam, educational expectations and Islamic faith schools to comprehensively explore education in relation to Islamism. Situating Muslims within contemporary societies, this book extends debates regarding educational philosophy and leadership, endorsing diversity and plurality through an appreciation of difference. Education, Leadership and Islam will appeal to education researchers as well as social and political scientists attempting to understand Muslim educational issues in contemporary life, both in the east and in the west. This book offers critical insight into educational theory and practice, and as such will be key reading for policy makers and educational leaders.

Book American Muslim School Leadership

Download or read book American Muslim School Leadership written by Siham Kamal Elsegeiny and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study employed a quantitative research design using a mail survey to explore leadership style in Islamic schools in the United States. The purpose of the study was to describe levels of transformational and transactional leadership of American Muslim principals. Correlational analyses were used to determine the relationship between principal and teacher reports of principals' use of transformational leadership and the relationship of demographic variables to perceptions of transformational leadership. Multiple regression analyses showed that none of the six demographic variables were significant predictors of the variance in principal- or teacher-reported use of transformational leadership. Thirty-three principals responded to the MLQ 5X self-rating form and 143 teachers responded to the MLQ 5X other-rating form. Principals rated themselves higher than their teachers on transformational leadership and lower than their teachers on transactional leadership. Both principals and teachers ranked principals highest in Inspirational Motivation and lowest in Management-by-Exception Passive. Principals rated themselves as being more intellectually stimulating and less often using contingent reward. In schools where teachers were more congruent in their ratings of the principal, they tended to perceive the principals as more transformational than did teachers in schools where teachers were less congruent in their ratings. It appears that where principals are more consistent in their interactions with teachers, teachers have higher opinions of the principal as a transformational leader. Both teachers and principals rated principals of American Muslim schools as fairly high in the use of both transformational and transactional leadership. Comparisons of these findings to other research in the U.S. suggest that American Muslim principals exhibit leadership characteristics very similar to those of other U.S. principals.

Book Culturally Proficient Leadership in Urban K 12 Schools

Download or read book Culturally Proficient Leadership in Urban K 12 Schools written by Vickie Lynn Gomez and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined how urban school principals' perceptions of cultural competency affect their leadership practices. The following research questions were analyzed to explore this inquiry (1) What are urban school principals' perceptions of cultural competency? (2) How do their perceptions of cultural competency affect the daily management of their schools? (3) What might be barriers, realities and issues that prevent a leader from practicing culturally relevant leadership? This multisite exploratory case study included five principals of urban schools. In-person interviews were conducted with each principal. Additionally, school board meeting minutes and the School Accountability Report Cards (SARC) for each of the five schools was reviewed and analyzed. The study also employed the Cultural Proficiency Model (CPM) as a conceptual framework for data analysis to illuminate the principal's perspectives of cultural competency. The data revealed that the principals' experienced barriers to culturally competent leadership in the daily management of their schools. However, the principal's perspectives on the barriers, and challenges of culturally competent leadership were based on their level of cultural competency as assessed by the CPM. Additional themes in the study were, value diversity, leadership and advocacy. Findings further revealed that the principals' perceptions of cultural competency were influenced by their understanding of the value of diversity and its relationship to leadership and student advocacy efforts. Lastly, findings suggest that continuous training and professional development in culturally competent leadership is needed for the principals to achieve cultural proficiency.

Book Teaching Educational Leadership in Muslim Countries

Download or read book Teaching Educational Leadership in Muslim Countries written by Eugenie A. Samier and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-10 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the Islamic tradition and Muslim contexts for educational administration and leadership. It addresses the teaching of educational administration and leadership from an Islamic perspective by raising issues of globalised educational administration and leadership teaching as it applies in Muslim contexts that vary by culture and social institutions. The book proposes alternative approaches and demonstrates that Islamic traditions have a strong foundation upon which to build in the field and are compatible with many aspects of Western theory and practices, provided that sufficient modifications and adaptations are made. The book focuses on postgraduate curricula and pedagogy, drawing on a range of theoretical foundations and approaches that are culturally and jurisdictionally appropriate in a number of Muslim countries. As such, it contributes to an emerging specialisation in international and comparative educational administration and leadership that is oriented towards a broader and more diverse set of perspectives, particularly from the non-Western world.

Book Culturally Responsive School Leadership

Download or read book Culturally Responsive School Leadership written by Muhammad Khalifa and published by Harvard Education Press. This book was released on 2020-07-27 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Culturally Responsive School Leadership focuses on how school leaders can effectively serve minoritized students—those who have been historically marginalized in school and society. The book demonstrates how leaders can engage students, parents, teachers, and communities in ways that positively impact learning by honoring indigenous heritages and local cultural practices. Muhammad Khalifa explores three basic premises. First, that a full-fledged and nuanced understanding of “cultural responsiveness” is essential to successful school leadership. Second, that cultural responsiveness will not flourish and succeed in schools without sustained efforts by school leaders to define and promote it. Finally, that culturally responsive school leadership comprises a number of crucial leadership behaviors, which include critical self-reflection; the development of culturally responsive teachers; the promotion of inclusive, anti-oppressive school environments; and engagement with students’ indigenous community contexts. Based on an ethnography of a school principal who exemplifies the practices and behaviors of culturally responsive school leadership, the book provides educators with pedagogy and strategies for immediate implementation.
