Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to explore the lives of six, economically disadvantaged, African American, middle school students who are demonstrating school success to discover how their home, school, and community experiences influenced their academic achievement. A phenomenological inquiry approach was applied in this qualitative study to investigate the lived experiences of the student participants and identify the factors that contributed to their academic achievements in spite of the various challenges they encountered. The qualitative data consisted of three individual interviews. Using a semistructured protocol, questions focused on the students. perceptions of the factors that contributed to their academic success and the challenges they experienced; how the students made meaning of their academic lives in the school setting; and how the students. home and community experiences influenced their academic achievement. The seven step modified van Kaam method was employed to analyze the data obtained from the six student participants. The findings revealed that all six-student participants had the same perception of what it means to be a high achiever. Most of the student participants encountered challenges within family and home factors that varied, but the data revealed perceived negative influences of the community from most participants. However, all of the student participants developed ways to maintain their academic achievement despite their challenges. The student participants attributed their academic success to having an inner will to achieve, working hard, remaining focused, and staying out of trouble. Each of the student participants were goal oriented and aspired to attend college. Most of the student participants shared how their peers served as a positive influence on their academic achievement by providing help with difficult work and serving as a motivator as they engaged in healthy competition. Student participants also identified teacher and parental support as having a positive impact on their academic achievement.

Book excerpt: This report examines the demographic and language characteristics and educational aspirations of Asian American and Hispanic American eighth graders and relates that information to their mathematical ability and reading comprehension as measured by an achievement test. Special attention is paid to students who come from homes in which a non-English language is spoken. The report uses information selected from the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988 (NELS:88). The NELS:88 administered questionnaires and tests to a national sample of 25,000 eighth grade students in over 1,000 public and private schools in spring 1988. A second data collection was conducted in spring 1990. Of the 1,505 Asian American students evaluated, 73 percent were reported as language minorities (LMs), while 77 percent of the 3,129 Hispanic American students evaluated were LMs. Of the LM students, 66 percent of the Asian Americans had high English proficiency as compared to 64 percent of the LM Hispanic Americans. Both Asian American and Hispanic American groups had 4 percent of LM students showing low English proficiency. Overall, the study found many similarities between the two groups. However, differences are apparent when data are divided along language proficiency, mathematics achievement, aspiration, and other measures. Statistical data are provided in 33 tables and 44 graphs. Book excerpt: Globally, mental health problems remain as one of the largest contributors to the population burden of diseases. According to WHO, common mental disorders, including depression and anxiety, affect the health of about 9% of the world’s population and account for over 10% of the total years lived with disability. In many parts of the world, the number of people with mental health disorders has been increasing, fueled by a rapid population growth and aging, as well as urbanization and immigration. It is estimated that 80% of these non-fatal diseases occurred in low and middle income countries. However, in such settings, coverage of both preventive and curative services is still very limited. Diversity in socio-cultural backgrounds and limited capacity of local health care systems are emphasizing the importance of systematic approaches to understanding and intervening in the issue. Although the social, economic and health burden of mental health issues are substantial, effectiveness of policies and interventions is varied across regions and largely driven by contextual factors. Evidence-based prevention and treatment approaches involve the synthesis of epidemiological surveys, assessment of clinical populations (e.g chronic medical diseases, chronic psychiatric illnesses) and studies exploring the role of biological markers in psychiatric illnesses. This study addresses a notable gap in existing literature by examining the cross-cultural validity of the Student-Teacher Relationship Scale (STRS) within the Vietnamese educational context. The quality of teacher-student relationships is widely acknowledged as pivotal for students' social-emotional, behavioral, and cognitive development. This research aims to investigate the dimensional structure of Closeness, Conflict, and Dependency within the adapted STRS in the unique cultural context of Vietnam. Several hypotheses are proposed, including the expected factorial validity of the survey as a measure of the relationship between secondary school students and teachers, significant differences in mean levels of Closeness, Conflict, and Dependency, correlations among latent factors of the STRS, a positive relationship between Dependency and Closeness, and the moderation of the effect of Dependency on Closeness by Conflict. Throughout the subsequent chapters, the literature, methodology, results, and discussion offer insights into the intricacies of teacher-student relationships within the Vietnamese educational context. The study contributes valuable perspectives to the international literature on teacher-student relationships, considering cross-cultural, statistical, and practical dimensions. The findings aim to provide guidance for improving these relationships in the educational setting.

Book excerpt: "Using data from Indonesia, Newhouse and Beegle to evaluate the impact of school type on academic achievement of junior secondary school students (grades 7-9). Students that graduate from public junior secondary schools, controlling for a variety of other characteristics, score 0.15 to 0.3 standard deviations higher on the national exit exam than comparable privately schooled peers. This finding is robust to OLS, fixed-effects, and instrumental variable estimation strategies. Students attending Muslim private schools, including Madrassahs, fare no worse on average than students attending secular private schools. The results provide indirect evidence that higher quality inputs at public junior secondary schools promote higher test scores. "--Cover verso.

Book excerpt: A growing body of evidence suggests that people exhibit large biases when processing information about themselves, but less is known about the underlying inference process. This paper studies belief updating patterns regarding academic ability in a large sample of students transitioning from middle to high school in Mexico City. The paper takes advantage of rich and longitudinal data on subjective beliefs together with randomized feedback about individual performance on an achievement test. On average, the performance feedback reduces the relative role of priors on posteriors and shifts substantial probability mass toward the signal. Further evidence reveals that males and high-socioeconomic status students, especially those attending relatively better schools, tend to process new information on their own ability more effectively.

Section I: Background of the study The Indian school education system in the last few decades has gone on to make their mark in diverse fields of national and international life. There are diverse aspects of our educational system, particularly the school system that are lacking to make a significant impact. It is characterized by inflexibility where learning is unconnected with the students' 2 life and this in turn has led to the neglect of students' present abilities and increase in their difficulties (NCERT, 2006). The National focus Group of the NCERT (2006) further points out that the Indian School Education System is a monolithic system that has resulted in a set of practices for the development of curriculum, syllabus and textbooks rather focused on the requirements of the examination system than the child's learning requirement, aims of education and the socioeconomic and cultural contexts of learners. It further highlights the fact that educational practices in school are a dull routine, characterized by bored teachers and students, and a rote system of learning. Performance in academics requires all aspects of the students' wellbeing such as psychological behavioral, emotional, physical and social. Students who are physically and psychologically stable and strong tend to perform better when compared to those who are not. In other words, those who are experiencing psychological problems face difficulties in their academic performance. Hence, psychological stability turns out to be an important predictor of high academic achievement. Understanding aspects of the self, particularly of students who are low achievers is critical, due to the large number of children who are left behind and the social ramifications that result from poor education. In a country like India, with a population over a billion, the demand the school going population places on the limited resources, government policies and the type of delivery all gain special significance when the students' academic life and career is taken into consideration. With a huge demand of good quality education and delivery that the school going population places on the government and private players, it is quite possible that students, who fail, fall back. It is all the more so, if students have difficulties in learning.
