Book excerpt: A missing component in the current international student literature is how international Indian graduate students adjust academically and socially to a new learning environment and how academic advising influences international Indian graduate students' academic success and social adjustment. This qualitative study addresses this gap in the literature by using Rendón's (1994) validation theory and by drawing upon 11 students' lived experiences at a four-year public research university in the state of Texas. Four distinct themes emerged from the study's findings, such as international Indian graduate students' lack of understanding of academic advising, their perceptions of academic advising, supportive academic advising experiences, and challenging academic advising experiences. The study revealed that international Indian graduate students' understanding and perceptions of academic advising were different from their lived experiences. The results also highlight the role of an academic advisor in students' adjustment process as well as the importance of an academic advisor in making informed decisions related to academics. More importantly, guided by Rendón's validation theory, it was determined that participants' believed their supportive experiences with academic advising validates their academic success and social adjustment, while their challenging experiences with academic advising (in)validate their academic success and social adjustment. The larger international student experience research must continue to delve into ways in which colleges and universities across the United States can play a substantive role in better preparing and supporting international students prior to and after their arrival. To that end, colleges and universities must also better prepare academic advisors when serving international students and provide for increased support and infrastructure in the field of academic advising.

Outcomes of academic advising may be more critical than realized by either advisors or advisees. Studies have been compiled to suggest that meaningful and developmental contact with advisors promotes student success (Johnson & Wang, 2011; Kuh, 2008; Tuttle, 2000). However, a review of literature was used to reveal that students are dissatisfied with their academic advising, and that an extensive need exists to educate and train academic advisors on methods needed for establishing effective advising for college students. Therefore, the purpose of this descriptive-correlational study was to describe current undergraduate students' perceptions of academic advising practices within the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) at The Ohio State University. The theoretical foundation for this study included two theories of student development. Perry's (1970) Theory of College Student Intellectual Development was used to describe how college students progress through three major stages of thought in their cognitive development. Chickering's (1969) Seven Vectors of Student Development Theory was used to identify seven vectors along which college students continually develop. The researcher-designed questionnaire in this study contained 20 Likert-scale items that originated from the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). The researcher employed an online survey provider for data collection. Analyses of the results indicated that academic advisors in CFAES were providing good quality advising to their undergraduate advisees. Academic advisors in CFAES were rated positively in regards to their relationships with undergraduate advisees. Students reported that advisors were available, and provided accurate and up-to-date information when it was needed. It was also found that the institution provided good quality academic advising to undergraduate students in CFAES, as well as provided support to help students succeed academically through academic advising. Analyses of the results also identified areas of improvement for academic advising practices in CFAES. Academic advisors in CFAES are advising only half of their assigned undergraduate advisees, while half of the students indicated they were using sources other than their assigned advisor for advising needs. It was also reported that academic advisors in CFAES do not tend to discuss career plans with undergraduate advisees. It was concluded that undergraduate students in CFAES were generally satisfied with the quality of academic advising they received at the college and the institution. Relationships indicated that the more frequent contact advisees have with their advisors, the more likely they were to be satisfied with the advising practices and engaged in enriching educational experiences. Recommendations included providing academic advisor training for new faculty members to inform them of the policies, procedures, and effective practices in academic advising. A second recommendation was for the college to conduct professional development opportunities for faculty members who serve as advisors to update them on the current research and advising practices. Further recommendations included to assess the effectiveness of advisors by using student feedback and to encourage advisors to maintain regular office hours and offer varied modes of contact with advisees.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Academic advising has been identified as one of the most important predictors of graduate student success since faculty members have responsibilities for graduate student learning and development inside and outside the classroom (Bair, Haworth & Sandfort, 2004). As such, the relationship between a student and their adviser is important to graduate students' progress towards degrees and other academic goals (Acker, Hill & Black, 1994), particularly for international students (Ku, Lahman, Yeh & Cheng, 2008). With this in mind, the purpose of this study was to describe international students' experience with academic advisors and to explore the role their advisors play in their degree completion. Eight international doctoral students from social science and humanities degree programs were interviewed and their contributions analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings indicate that advisors can positively impact international doctoral students' experience by supporting them academically and personally, providing funding opportunities, and setting clear expectations for their students. In addition, advisors should also help these students to understand the norms, expectations and values of graduate education in American institutions. Finally, departments should consider policy changes to ensure the availability of faculty advisors who share students' research interests.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the responses to a survey questionnaire of the international student population enrolled at the University of Virginia in the Graduate Schools of Arts and Sciences, Architecture, Education, Engineering and Applied Sciences, Business Administration, Law, and Medicine during the academic year 1972-73. Emphasis in this study was on: (1) the relationship between the self-concept and the degree of academic and social involvement by international students in a culturally different environment and (2) the relationship between the international students' self-concept and their attitudes toward the University Counseling Center and the International Center. The objectives of the study were to answer the following questions: (1) Is there a relationship between the international student's self-concept and his academic adjustment to the University? (2) Is there a relationship between the international student's self-concept and his non-academic adjustment to the University? (3) Is there a relationship between the international student's self-concept and his perception of the University Counseling Center? (4) Is there a relationship between the international student's self-concept and his attitudes toward the International Center? (5) What is the international students' self-evaluation of levels of difficulty in adjusting to the University setting? (6) What is the international students' self-evaluation of their ability to use the English language? In order to meet the purposes of the study a three-part questionnaire was mailed to the 144 international graduate students from 43 different countries who were enrolled at the University of Virginia during the academic year 1972-73. One hundred and one usable responses were received, 79 from men and 22 from women. Parts I and II of the questionnaire were designed to survey the international students' academic and non-academic adjustment, and special perception and attitude toward the Counseling Center and the International Center. Part III of the questionnaire was a modified form of Osgood's Semantic Differential Technique using a five point scale to measure the students' self-concept. From an analysis of the data collected for this research study, the following conclusions have been drawn. (1) Sixty-three students reported that they were satisfied with their academic experience at the University, while 18 students reported that they were highly satisfied. (2 )When they have academic problems, they indicated that they would go to their academic advisor for assistance. Their second choice was faculty members and the third choice was family members. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to gain insight into the University of Wisconsin--Superior student body, their perspectives on advisement practices, and the issues students face when registering for classes, dropping classes, and reasons for leaving. This research was specifically designed to explore how international and domestic students "use" and view their advisors. Previous research shows that the success of students can be related to the quality of the advisement they are provided within their major. The goal was to see if this remained true for international students, which would lead to higher retention of this population. The goals while conducting this study were (a) find out advisees' perspectives on the academic advising; (b) learn whether there was a difference in perspectives between international students and domestic students; (c) learn how an advisor can individually improve the quality of his/her advising for international students; and (d) identify student perspectives on how academic advising as a whole can improve. Survey data was gathered from 48 international students and 26 domestic students. The results compared international student advising perspectives to domestic student advising perspectives and found differences in the two populations. International students felt more insecurity and met with their advisors more than domestic students. International students rated their advisor lower than domestic students do in the following ways: my advisor is easy to contact, gives me as much time as I need when we meet, helps me understand why required courses are important for my professional development and future plans, and helps me make important educational decisions. International students struggled with homesickness and tuition which prevented them from registering on time; they were more likely to be first generation college students; and, they felt their support systems are more limited than domestic students. Also, international students expected college to be easier than what domestic students thought.
