Book Perceptions of High School Boys Toward Nursing as a Career Choice

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States is in the midst of a nursing shortage expected to intensify over the next decades. Compounding this problem are nursing school enrollments insufficient to meet the projected demand for nursing care. One suggested strategy is to increase the interest of young men in the nursing profession, as more young women are attracted to a variety of other career options. This dissertation report presents findings from a study exploring the perceptions of nursing as a career choice among high school boys. The research instrument was adapted, with permission, from a tool developed by May, Austin, and Champion (1988) for a study conducted by Sigma Theta Tau, International on the perceptions of high school boys toward nursing as a career choice based on prestige, gender, and work activity factors. These factors have been identified in Gottfredson's Circumscription and Compromise Theory of Career Development (1981), and explain the persistent low interest of high school boys in female-dominated professions such as nursing. Findings demonstrated that participants perceived the image of nursing positively in terms of prestige, gender-typed as a woman's occupation to some extent, and perceived the activity of nursing extending beyond hospitals and sick people. Discriminant function analyses indicated participants' scores on subscales of prestige, gender, and work activity predicted a) participants' likelihood of considering nursing as a potential career choice (Wilks' Lambda = .969, p = .023*), and b) acceptance of a male friend choosing nursing (Wilks' Lambda = .809, p

Book Changing Perceptions of a Changed Profession

Download or read book Changing Perceptions of a Changed Profession written by Margaret J. Helminiak and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students at a private, militiary junior-senior high school in Texas were given a questionnaire to evaluate class enrollment into two groups. The experimental group listened to a persona educational program on the nursing profession, while the control group did not receive the intervention. At a later date, both groups again completed the questionnaires to evaluate for any changes in perceptions of an ideal career and nursing. Descriptive statistics were assigned to each attribute for each of the scales. Additionally, the individual scales were re-scored for a percentage number and a group mean and standard deviation for each scale was obtained. Two-tailed t-tests were calculated for each group to evaluate for statistically significant changes in perceptions. The experimental group scored a statistically significant positive difference in attitudes toward nursing as a career after the presentation. There was no statistically significant difference in the control group's before and after scores or in the experimental group's perceptions of an ideal career.

Book What Made Them Stay Male Nursing Students Perceptions on Entering and Completing Nursing School

Download or read book What Made Them Stay Male Nursing Students Perceptions on Entering and Completing Nursing School written by Michael M. Sealy and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to explore the lived experiences of male nursing students and recent graduates of nursing school as related to their attraction to the profession, recruitment into a nursing school, retention and persistence toward attainment of a baccalaureate nursing degree. The participants in the study included male baccalaureate nursing students who were engaged in their last year of nursing school, and male recent graduates who successfully completed their baccalaureate nursing degree within the last three years. The participants were between 24 to 46 years of age. The study employed a phenomenological design. A semi-structured interview protocol was developed to conduct one-to-one interviews with six male nursing students and recent graduates regarding participants' perceptions of their lived experiences within their nursing schools and the profession. By understanding factors that influence male students' attraction to the profession, recruitment into a nursing school, and retention and persistence of male baccalaureate nursing students toward successful attainment of a nursing degree, recommendations for best practices and structural improvements within institutions of higher education can be used to mediate the nursing shortage by creating equity and access for gender inclusion in the profession.
