Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching Assistants are increasingly relied upon to provide for children who experience difficulties in learning. Key Issues for Teaching Assistants is an essential companion for any Teaching Assistant who wants to understand more about inclusion and diversity in today's classrooms. While focussing particularly on the diverse roles of teaching assistants in supporting inclusive education, this book will be invaluable for all those involved in the development of inclusive learning and teaching. This highly accessible resource explores the values and the possible contradictions in policies and beliefs, enabling Teaching Assistants to develop a deeper understanding of the fundamental principles of inclusive education. Contributions from leading experts in the field consider common classroom issues such as: inclusion and special needs dealing with hard-to-reach parents tackling bullying and supporting those bullied boys, girls and the different ways they achieve being the class 'TA' not 'PA'. Each chapter contains an overview of topical debates, current research and initiatives, emphasising inclusive approaches and the importance of understanding the perspectives of children, regardless of their difference. Useful questions for reflection and a helpful list of suggested further reading material are also provided. Teaching Assistants, whether in practice, or as part of their study, will find this book an indispensable resource.

Book Teaching Assistants Inclusion and Special Educational Needs

Download or read book Teaching Assistants Inclusion and Special Educational Needs written by Rob Webster and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-19 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the first collection of international academic writing on the topic of teaching assistants. It serves as an indicative summary of current research and thinking in this field and as a point of departure for future research and development. With contributions from leading researchers, the book draws together empirical work on the deployment and impact of teaching assistants from various perspectives and from a range of methodological approaches. It highlights and celebrates the vital everyday contributions teaching assistants make to their schools and their communities: from their role within classrooms, to their moment-by-moment interactions with pupils and teachers. The book examines the effect that teaching assistants can have on pupils’ learning and wellbeing, and considers issues of over-dependence on classroom paraprofessionals and the unintended consequences to which this can lead. Bringing together work from a journal special issue with brand-new and updated chapters, the contributions offer insight into the liminal space between educator, caregiver, behaviour manager, and facilitator of learning and of peer relations, which characterizes the teaching assistant role. This timely and important book will be essential reading for academics, researchers, and students interested in special educational needs, disability, and inclusion, and those interested in the wider topic of paraprofessionals in labour markets.

Book Preparing for College and University Teaching

Download or read book Preparing for College and University Teaching written by Joanna Gilmore and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a guide for designing professional development programs for graduate students. The teaching competencies framework presented here can serve as the intended curriculum for such programs. The book will also be an excellent resource for evaluating programs, and will be an excellent resource for academics who study graduate students. This book presents the work of the Graduate Teaching Competencies Consortium to identify, organize, and clarify the competencies that graduate students need to teach effectively when they join the professoriate. To achieve this goal, the Consortium developed a framework of 10 teaching competencies organized around three overarching questions:• What do graduate students need to achieve by the end of their graduate education to be successful teacher-scholars?• What do graduate students need to understand about higher education to have successful careers as educators?• What do graduate students need to do to be successful teachers during their graduate student careers?Although much work has been done to identify the competencies of effective teachers in higher education, only a small portion of this work has been conducted with graduate student instructors. This is an important area of research given that graduate students are critical in the higher education academic pipeline. Nationally, graduate students teach between 25% and 50% of courses offered at the undergraduate level. Graduate student teaching is also critical because during early teaching experiences teachers establish a teaching style and set of teaching skills, which will endure as graduate students enter the professoriate. It is important to develop a teaching competency framework that is specific to graduate student instructors as they often have unique needs and roles as teachers. For example, graduate student instructors are in the unique position of becoming experts in their field concurrent with learning to teach. Moreover, as many professional development programs for graduate student instructors evolve based upon factors such as available resources and perceived needs of graduate students, this framework will be a useful aid for thoughtfully designing strategic, evidence-based, comprehensive professional development opportunities and programs.

Book Investigating Transformation

Download or read book Investigating Transformation written by Christina M. Partin and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) are becoming increasingly responsible for undergraduate instruction in the landscape of higher education. These experiences may serve as a pipeline for career readiness and success in faculty positions. Yet, the experiences of graduate teaching assistants are largely unexplored. This study describes the perceptons and experiences of a selected sample of GTAs, including their perceptions of available support, and the role of that support in navigating potential disorienting dilemmas. Existing literature suggests that disorienting dilemmas lead to transformative experiences through an internal process of critical self-reflection, but neglects the possibility of differential outcomes to disorienting dilemmas. Further, existing literature suggests that such challenges simply create a common, linear path toward transformation. Using qualitative data collected through participant interviews, this study offers an in-depth exploration of GTA experiences, while establishing ways in which these meet the criteria set forth in the literature for “disorienting dilemmas.” Futhers, this study examines ways that such experiences are mediated by GTA social and institutional support systems. By investigating the experiences of graduate teaching assistants, this study addresses a gap in the literature regarding the perceptions of the GTAs about their experiences in their role. Further, this study challenges an assumption in the literature about transformative experiences and offers insights into the differential outcomes may arise as a result of a disorienting dilemma.

Book Environments that Encourage Mathematics Graduate Teaching Assistants The Effects of Institution Type and Availability of Training

Download or read book Environments that Encourage Mathematics Graduate Teaching Assistants The Effects of Institution Type and Availability of Training written by Christine Lynn Latulippe and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brief synopsis of the study results is as follows: Math GTAs at R/I Universities perceived more support for good teaching in their departments than math GTAs at R/E Universities. Math GTAs at R/I Universities reported more positive attitudes toward teaching than their counterparts at R/E Universities. There existed a weak positive correlation between perceived departmental support for good teaching and GTA attitudes toward teaching. The effects of training on GTA attitudes toward teaching and perceptions of support for good teaching were inconsistent. The qualitative analysis of a particular open-ended survey item about support for good teaching suggests that the construct of departmental culture and the ways in which a department can support good teaching are far more complex than anticipated.

Also included are valuable insights of teacher education experts from other institutions to contextualize the particulars of this reform within the national education and teacher education scenes.
