Book excerpt: The classroom is a space in which students can participate in both academic and social experiences. Researchers suggest that students with learning disabilities may experience a sense of being different and isolated from their peers because of their learning differences (Alexander-Passe, 2008; Lackaye & Margalit, 2006). This qualitative research describes the perceptions of three young adults (aged 18-21) with learning disabilities (YALD) about their educational experiences in elementary and secondary school. Furthermore, this study identified academic, social, and interconnection of academic and social experiences from the participants' discussions. The lack of understanding about learning disabilities from teachers and peers, especially in elementary school, was a predominant theme in this study. The participants suggested that teachers should get to know the student rather than identifying characteristics of exceptionalities in order to help teachers better understand and work with students with learning disabilities.

Book excerpt: Despite federal legislation mandating parental participation in the design and delivery of special education services for children with disabilities, parents report feeling marginalized by educators as they are not treated as equal members of the educational teams of their children. As a result, a child's Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is a common source of conflict in special education. This study sought to determine factors which may shape parental perceptions of their interactions with educators during the IEP meeting including the disability classification, academic placement, grade level, and size of school district of the child. Through the use of a survey instrument (n = 164), the study found that parents of students with the disability classification of autism and students in more restrictive academic environments enjoyed better relations with educators than did peers. Relations with educators were found to degrade over time as students progressed from elementary to secondary schools. The size of the school district provided mixed findings regarding relations with educators, as parents of students with disabilities in larger school districts enjoyed better relationships with special education teachers and paraprofessional staff. By treating parents as equals during IEP meetings, education professionals minimize feelings of frustration that can lead to conflict. When adversarial relationships are avoided, conditions are created that can lead to greater student achievement and improved outcomes. (ProQuest abstract).

Book excerpt: This qualitative study examines the experiences and attitudes of elementary school students regarding individuals with disabilities, following five weeks of disability awareness instruction. It also evaluates the social validity of disability awareness instruction as an intervention tool based on student perceptions, and compares the use of a didactic teaching approach with one that also incorporates the use of bibliotherapy techniques. The current study is part of a larger study using a pre-test, post-test experimental group design (Teerlink, 2012). Participants included 322 elementary school students. Each class of first through sixth grade students was randomly assigned to one of three conditions: a bibliotherapy treatment group (n = 125), a didactic teaching group (n = 124), and a no-intervention control group (n = 73). Data for this study were collected at post-test only, using a short-answer, open-ended questionnaire administered to all participants, as well as focus group interviews conducted with three to four students from each grade level.

One strategy to aide in this effort is the use of an ability awareness program to increase understanding and relatability amongst all students. This study will look at the effectiveness of an ability awareness program to evoke change in the attitudes of elementary school children towards their peers with disabilities. The study consists of second grade students (n = 46), third grade students (n = 15), and observations of first through third grade students with autism (n = 8). Students' attitudes were measured through the use of an attitudinal questionnaire before and after the program. Qualitative data was collected through observation to document the frequency and duration of interactions between general education students and students with autism.
