(Head Start: Early Childhood Learning and Knowledge Center, 2018). This research provides an insight into Early Head Start teachers’ experiences and perceptions of instructional coaching. Instructional coaching has been utilized in educational settings to enhance teaching practices and to increase professional development (Knight, 2009). Thus far, most of the research has focused on coaching in K-12 programs (Gentry, Manning, Wolf, Hernez-Broome, & Allen, 2013). This study builds upon this body of research by developing an understanding of the teacher’s perceptions from those in an early head start setting. The overarching question of this study is: How do Early Head Start teachers perceive instructional coaching methods? Instructional coaching encompasses various learning theories that define effective professional development strategies. Within each theory, specific coaching insight is highlighted and expanded on to showcase the different strengths each philosophy embodies. The three categories discussed include Transformative Learning Theory, Facilitation Theory, and Experiential Learning Theory (ELT). Seven Early Head Start teachers volunteered to participate in individual semi structured interviews. Data was analyzed using open coding and thematic analysis. The findings revealed four themes: (a) coaching provides support, (b) coaching supports feedback, (c) relationships support change, (d) consistency provides stability. Within each theme, participants identified benefits, challenges, and their personal experiences. Findings from this study will contribute to refining instructional coaching practices, support, and how to enhance overall teaching practices for infant/toddler teachers. This study could help further research practice for early childhood programs serving infants and toddlers and provide insights of high quality practices through instructional coaching.

Book excerpt: This qualitative phenomenological study collected data pertaining to classroom teachers' and Instructional Coaches' perceptions related to the strategies utilized in Instructional Coaching and the roles of Instructional Coaches. The results of an annual school effectiveness survey, 12 interviews with classroom teachers, and 3 interviews with Instructional Coaches were analyzed. Although differences in the implementation of Instructional Coaches were evident in the school district, the teachers and Coaches identified modeling lessons and providing support to teachers as effective strategies utilized by Coaches, to improve instruction. In general, teachers believed they were more effective after they received Coaching. This study provides support for Instructional Coaching, while shedding light on several considerations schools might make as they consider the implementation of Instructional Coaches. Prior to the implementation of an Instructional Coaching program, school districts might attend to the development and communication of the actual role of the Coaches, establishment of consistent expectations across schools within the same district, and development of the professional capacity of Coaches and their administrators.

Instructional coaching has become a leading form of professional development in educational settings, yet there is a lack of empirical evidence that explains and clarifies it. One aspect of instructional coaching that is not known is how teachers perceive it. In order to gain understanding about instructional coaching, the perspectives of the teachers could provide valuable insight to benefit those involved in the practice. Instructional coaching and the schools where coaching takes place are complex in nature. Through the use of one-on-one interviews, an in-depth look at teachers’ perspectives provided insight into some of these complexities. Fifteen teachers in six child care centers participated in this study. Two qualitative strategies—inductive analysis (Hatch, 2002) and educational criticism (Eisner, 1998)—were used to analyze interview data from which three themes were formed: (a) instructional coaching is a means of building instructional capacity, (b) instructional coaching requires a supportive environment, and (c) instructional coaching increases children’s learning opportunities. The themes are perspectives from which to view and understand instructional coaching in preschool classrooms. One conclusion in this study was that all three themes were substantially supported by extant literature and empirical research. The implication for policy and practice is that instructional coaching is contingent upon change and change is difficult due to resistance by teachers and systemic issues. Five recommendations are highlighted in this study: (a) instructional coaches should demonstrate a high level of proficiency in educational knowledge and practice, (b) coaches should be involved in on-going professional development that includes communication training, (c) teacher supervisors should be involved in instructional coaching as instructional leaders, (d) instructional coaching should be intentional, and (e) instructional coaching should have child learning as its primary focus. Further research is needed to better understand the perspective of teachers in the field of early childhood education; the perspectives of instructional coaches in the field of early childhood education; and how to effectively involve teacher supervisors in the coaching process to develop teacher leaders and support them to assume the duties and responsibilities of highly effective instructional leaders who influence deep, sustained learning facilitated by problem-solving- and creativity-focused instruction.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this qualitative research study was to describe and explain the characteristics of an effective professional development model in an early intervention training program. The focus of the study was on particular aspects of literacy instruction that were emphasized during training sessions and trainer and teacher perceptions of the Accelerated Literacy Learning (ALL) program. This study examined the elements of training that two teachers chose to transfer to their classrooms, as well as modifications they chose to make, in the year following training in an effort to gain further insight into successful teacher training practices. The following research questions guided this study: 1. How do teachers who have received early intervention training for two semesters apply this knowledge in their classrooms during the following school year? 2. What do teachers choose to use and not use from the training program and why? 3. What modifications of the program do teachers make, if any, and why? 4. What are the perceptions of trainers about an early intervention training program? To obtain answers to these research questions, I conducted individual and focus group interviews with teachers and trainers, made observations of training sessions, analyzed course documents, and observed two teachers in their classrooms in the year following training. These data were analyzed using qualitative analysis procedures. I followed a phenomenological theoretical approach and reported my findings through descriptive case studies. The study findings indicated that teachers chose to use many elements of training in their classrooms in the year following training. It was discovered that the elements that the teachers chose to use in training were the elements that the trainers emphasized in training sessions. The findings also indicated that teachers made modifications to the lesson format that they were taught in training. The segment of the lesson that the teachers chose to modify was one that was not as prescriptive in training as other lesson segments. The trainers did not spend as much time discussing the writing segment of the lesson format as they did the other segments and consequently the teachers made modifications.
