Book Perceptions of College Students Regarding the Effects of Their High School AVID Program on Their Post secondary Education

Download or read book Perceptions of College Students Regarding the Effects of Their High School AVID Program on Their Post secondary Education written by Benjamin Long Vue and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is one of many high school programs that prepare students for college. In 1980, the AVID program began as a support class to help struggling students. Over the years, the strategies developed by Mary Swanson, transformed the program which has been adopted by school districts throughout California to help underrepresented, first generation minority, and low socio-economic high school students realize the dream of going to college. Many other states and countries have also adopted the AVID strategies into their schools. The AVID program offers three components. In the first component, AVID offers students the opportunity to learn Cornell note-taking strategies, participate in weekly tutorials, and Socratic seminars. Secondly, students have an opportunity to volunteer time to work with community organizations. Lastly, students learn about career opportunities available to them. Several themes emerged from the analysis of the interview data. The participants, in this study, use the strategies taught in their high school AVID program to successfully complete college courses. They are more confident speaking in public because AVID required them to take part in community service. Participants appreciate that their high school AVID program provided opportunities to visit college and university campuses and to learn about career choices.

Book Impact of Advancement Via Individual Determination AVID on Achievement and Perceptions of Learning

Download or read book Impact of Advancement Via Individual Determination AVID on Achievement and Perceptions of Learning written by Zoe Varela Beltz and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preparing students for success in their educational endeavors and beyond is the primary function of schools and, yet, how to do so is one of the most hotly debated issues of education today. Programs such as Advancement Via Individual Determination, or AVID, seek to help students become more successful and more prepared for college and also hope to close the achievement gap. This study examines the impact of the AVID program at one Southern California high-performing school on its students' academics and perceptions of school and learning. The study found that students within the AVID program increased their GPAs and those who had been in for two years had even stronger growth. Additionally, results showed that students overwhelmingly felt that the program had a positive impact on their school and learning, most especially on aspects of organization, collaboration, and the AVID family.

Book Leaving the College Track

Book excerpt: Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a college readiness program that attempts to address both the academic and informational barriers to postsecondary education. AVID is designed to prepare students in the academic middle for postsecondary enrollment and success through a combination of support services and increased expectations. The AVID program, which serves more than 425,000 youth in the United States alone at the middle, high, and postsecondary levels, has been the subject of significant research. But prior studies on AVID have ignored student exit from the program despite evidence that exit rates of 50% or higher are common. In this dissertation, I use a mixed methods approach to study the causes and effects of AVID exit in an urban school district in the Midwest. For the qualitative component of my study, I interviewed AVID coordinators and teachers about their perspectives of student exit and analyzed interview data to assess the alignment between AVID exit and role exit theory, which focuses on disengagement from a role that is central to an individual's identity. For the quantitative component, I used summary statistics to describe patterns of student exit. I also used Propensity Score Matching to create matched groups of AVID exits and AVID persisters in order to estimate the impact of exiting AVID. Overall, I find that role exit theory aligns very well with AVID exit, and that teachers generally believe that ex-AVID students struggle post exit. The estimated effects of AVID exit resulting from the Propensity Score Matching procedure are larger for attendance and behavior, smaller for Grade Point Average, and negligible for standardized test scores, although even the largest effects on attendance and behavior are in the range traditionally considered to be small. In addition, I find that some ex-AVID students achieve success post-exit and that teachers can identify many situations where AVID exit is beneficial for the student and the AVID program. I argue that AVID exit is common and should receive explicit attention in future AVID research, and that AVID exit is not necessarily something that should be avoided in all cases.

Book A Study of the Advancement VIA Individual Determination AVID Program and Student Self efficacy and Academic Achievement

Download or read book A Study of the Advancement VIA Individual Determination AVID Program and Student Self efficacy and Academic Achievement written by Kimberly S. Monachino and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research study examined the impact of the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program on students' self-efficacy and academic achievement outcome measures at the middle and high school level. AVID is a college readiness system designed to prepare at-risk students in the fourth through 12th grade for college. The main focus of this study was to determine if there was a difference in students' self-efficacy based on the number of years in the AVID program and if there was a difference in AVID students' academic achievement outcome measures between seventh and eighth grade in reading and math. Participants included seventh through 11th grade AVID students in one suburban school district within northeast Ohio (N = 239). These students reported perceptions of their self-efficacy on the My Voice Survey (QISA, 2010). Student achievement data were obtained from the 2010-2011 Ohio Department of Education Local Report Card. Through multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) the data were analyzed. Findings from this study indicated that there were statistically significant differences in students' self-efficacy based on the number of years in the AVID program and statistically significant differences in academic achievement outcome measures between seventh and eighth grade for AVID students in reading and math. AVID students' active engagement was statistically significant in year 1 of the AVID program when compared to year 2, year 3 or more. Seventh grade AVID students' math scores had a statistically significant higher mean score (414.66) than did eighth grade AVID students' math scores (403.02). These results suggested that AVID students' self-efficacy and academic achievement outcomes did not increase as they progressed through the program. The data showed that perhaps the AVID program may not be the answer to the problem that was posed in this study and that the AVID program alone may not be the reason for the findings of the study. The results may be attributed to other variables beyond the AVID program, such as high quality instruction from teachers, mentoring from tutors, support from guidance counselors, or encouragement from family members.

Download or read book Toward Resiliency written by Laura Horn and published by Department of Education Office of Educational. This book was released on 1998 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined whether or not student, parent, and peer engagement factors that contribute to at-risk students' success in graduating from high school continue to be important in making the transition from high school to postsecondary education. The data set used was the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988, which included 1994 data obtained two years after students' scheduled high school graduation. At-risk students exhibited two or more of six risk factors, including "family in the lowest socioeconomic quartile" or "held back a grade". Analysis used alternative statistical methodology, specifically regression analysis and the "odds ratios" produced by this procedure. Key findings indicated that: (1) students whose parents frequently discussed school-related matters and/or had high educational expectations were much more likely than other students to enroll in postsecondary education; (2) students who reported that most or all of their high school friends planned to attend college were far more likely to attend themselves; (3) participating in college preparation activities such as gathering information about financial aid increased the odds of enrolling in postsecondary education; and (4) moderate- to high-risk students participating in college outreach programs were more likely to attend college. Appended are a glossary and technical and methodology notes. (Contains 11 references.) (DB)

This book was released on 2018 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exposing students to higher standards of rigor and relevance is a constant challenge for educators. Project based learning, behavioral interventions, and finding strategies to integrate technology into the classroom are now mandated by many school districts. The introduction and implementation of Career Technical Education coursework has become a high priority in education. The purpose of this study was to examine students' attitudes regarding the effects of Career Technical Education classes in preparation for college and career readiness. Participants completed an online survey consisting of ten statements distributed to 30 high school students in grades ten through twelve. The responses to each survey statement were analyzed using a Chi Square Goodness of Fit along with descriptive techniques. The analysis showed no statistically significant difference in the distribution of responses for nine of the ten survey statements which include communication, engagement, leadership, organization, problem-solving, social skills, teamwork, time management, and willingness to learn. The analysis did show a statistically significant difference in the distribution of responses for statement ten, work ethic (p

Book Exploring Low income Student Perceptions of High School in the Transition to College

Download or read book Exploring Low income Student Perceptions of High School in the Transition to College written by David J. Stirrat and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students raised in low-income households continue to trail the general student population in attainment of baccalaureate degrees. Despite considerable resources aimed at closing this gap, students among underrepresented minorities, first-in-their-family students, and low-income students are less likely to find success in college. As our educational system demands greater accountability in improving retention and graduation rates, there is a need for further quantitative and qualitative investigation of the path of low-income students. This study focuses on the perceptions these students have of their high school life and how well high school prepared them for postsecondary school/college. Participants were interviewed to share their individual experiences about high school and their college transition challenges. The initial hypothesis - students would identify a particular area of need - was not confirmed. Instead, I found a more general conclusion: that the many variables a student brings to his or her educational journey must each be addressed individually. The study produced several implications for high school and college, particularly that personal connection and powerful student stories must be addressed in the college environment to assist students in connecting with college and remaining in the program to degree objective.

Book The Implementation and Outcomes of the AVID Program in the Urban Middle School Setting

Download or read book The Implementation and Outcomes of the AVID Program in the Urban Middle School Setting written by Katrina Bailey and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the implementation and outcomes of the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program within the context of urban middle schools. AVID is a college and career readiness program designed to support students from historically underrepresented backgrounds in their academic pursuits. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the AVID program is implemented in urban middle schools and to determine its impact on students’ academic performance. Using a mixed-methods approach, this research employs quantitative and qualitative data collection methods to gather comprehensive insights. The study involves semi-structured interviews with teachers, campus administrators, district administrators, and coordinators involved with the implementation of the AVID program. Additionally, academic records and standardized test scores were analyzed to measure the outcomes for students who participated in the AVID program compared to their non-AVID peers. The findings of this study will contribute to the existing knowledge on the effectiveness of the AVID program specifically in urban middle schools. By examining the implementation strategies utilized by schools, this research aims to identify the factors that contribute to successful program execution. Furthermore, it seeks to explore how the AVID program influences students' college aspirations and their overall educational experiences in urban middle schools. The outcomes of this research include a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with implementing the AVID program in urban middle schools. The study will also shed light on the impact of the program on academic performance, college aspirations, and the overall educational trajectory of participating students. These findings will inform educators, administrators, and policymakers of the potential benefits and limitations of implementing the AVID program within urban middle school settings. Overall, this dissertation seeks to contribute to the body of research on the AVID program by providing empirical evidence on its implementation and outcomes in urban middle schools. The findings will offer valuable insights to guide future program implementation and inform strategies to enhance the educational experiences and outcomes of students from underrepresented backgrounds in urban settings

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this case study was to investigate the transition experiences of AVID program graduates who were beginning their second year of college at competitive four-year public universities. All eight participants, in the AVID pre-college program for at least three years, had successfully transitioned to the university. The study was framed by two research questions: (1) How did AVID program graduates adapt academically and culturally to a four-year public university during their first year? (2) In what ways did they attribute their persistence in college to their high school AVID experience? The findings indicated that the participants, all first generation college, felt both academically and culturally challenged during the transitional year, especially in the areas of critical reading and expository writing. Some participants, not accustomed to the academic reading and writing standards of the university, used a trial and error method to attempt to meet the requirements and did not consistently execute the strategies learned in AVID. These students reported missing classes and avoiding reading assignments.

Book The AVID Effect in High School

Download or read book The AVID Effect in High School written by Darrell J. Potts and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) website, there are multiple studies comparing the academic achievement of AVID students to non-AVID students. This research study was uniquely designed to determine the effectiveness of the AVID program in large urban school districts in the south based on students’ junior year academic performance on state assessments such as the ACT, English III, Math III, and chemistry exams. This study also examined comparisons between graduation rates, suspensions, and attendance. A one-way ANOVA was conducted to compare means of three groups during this study including AVID elective students, non-AVID elective students attending non-AVID schools, and non-AVID elective students attending AVID schools. An analysis of the results of the study indicated that junior year academic achievement means do not show a significant difference with ACT composite scores or state assessment performance in Math III, English III, and chemistry. However, the means for AVID elective students were slightly higher. Non-AVID students had slightly higher ACT composite score means. The results of the study indicated that the graduation rates, suspension, and attendance data do not reflect a significant difference between AVID elective students attending AVID schools, non-AVID students attending non-AVID schools, nor non-AVID elective students attending AVID schools. However, AVID elective students had slightly lower ISS, OSS, and days absent from school. Recommendations for future study were provided.

Book Opportunity and Access

Download or read book Opportunity and Access written by Cassie K. Ferguson and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The skills taught and the courses offered to the United States' public high school students have changed drastically over the past 20 years. Career-based electives have given way to college preparatory classes. Gone are the auto shops, construction and home economics classes-courses that many view as outdated, dangerous or unnecessary at the high school level. Arts and humanities-based courses have also disappeared; even courses that can train students to enter the robust fields of healthcare or technology are diminishing (Dare, 2006). The communities in which many of these courses are disappearing are often diverse and economically disadvantaged. This "second-generation segregation" which materializes as differentiated course offerings for students from various backgrounds may lend some insight into explaining the current inequities in student achievement (Southworth & Mickelson, 2007, p. 498). Perhaps students are disconnecting from their public education due to the loss of access to varied learning opportunities. The purpose of this mixed-method research study is to examine the impact of high school coursework on students' perception of their post-secondary options. Current high school students and their school counselor are interviewed in an effort to determine if particular coursework, for better or worse, has any effect at all on a student's self-perception and what they see as a feasible option for their future.

Book Benefits of Dual Enrollment Agreements at a High School Within Chester County Pennsylvania cDavid C Madden

Download or read book Benefits of Dual Enrollment Agreements at a High School Within Chester County Pennsylvania cDavid C Madden written by David C. Madden and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to analyze the perceptions of the high school graduates and college professors on the effectiveness of the dual-enrollment program. A single school district within Chester County, Pennsylvania, was selected for this case study. Through surveys and semi-structured interviews, this researcher asked participants their perceptions of the benefits associated with participation in a dual-enrollment program. Archival data and interviews were used to triangulate the rich and descriptive data obtained. Of the 31 participants, twenty-four were high school graduates who participated in a dual-enrollment program included in this study, while seven were college professors who offered instruction at one of the colleges included in this study. Participant perceptions of the perceived benefits of the dual-enrollment program often intertwined, so that there were shared themes across all three research questions. The study was designed to uncover student perceptions regarding: (a) participant level of satisfaction associated with dual-enrollment programs, (b) high school performance, (c) transition from high school to post-secondary schooling, (d) comparable treatment of high school and traditional college students in dual-enrollment courses, (e) level of preparedness for college courses, and, (f) post-secondary performance. Each of these six topics is embedded within the three research questions. Overall, dual-enrollment participants indicated that their experience was a positive one. Participants used various phrases to describe the perceived benefits of participating in the dual-enrollment program. The emerging themes which were reflected in these responses were (a) overall preparedness, (b) the ease of transition as a result of participating in a dual-enrollment program, (c) an increased awareness for personal responsibility and time management, (d) a recognition of the value of accumulating college credit while still in high school, (e) the financial benefits of taking college classes while still in high school, and (f) a recognition that expectations of high school teachers were often less stringent than expectations of college professors. The rich and descriptive responses of the participants as related to the benefits of participating in a dual-enrollment program reinforced the research cited in the review of literature which promoted further study of dual-enrollment programs and overall educational reform initiatives at the secondary level.
