Book Accreditation of Historically and Predominantly Black Colleges and Universities

Download or read book Accreditation of Historically and Predominantly Black Colleges and Universities written by Wilma J. Roscoe and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1989 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenge of accreditation in a modern educational environment faces such questions as how to keep an accrediting process which is independent of the government, which respects the diversity of institutions, which keeps the process open whereby institutions can set their own goals and missions and above all improve access to education for the masses and at the same time maintain the confidence of the general public that graduates measure up to the minimum levels of quality. In this volume, James Rogers discusses the current state of accreditation in the United States with special emphasis on historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Maxine Allen and John Austin assess the current status of HBCUs relative to accreditation. Howard Simmons focuses on the importance of blacks' participation in the accreditation process. In the appendix, Regina Norman presents a summary profile of the regional and specialized accreditation of HBCUs. Co-published with the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education.

Download or read book Perceptions of Transformational and Transactional Leadership at Historically Black Colleges and Universities written by David Noel Hefner and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: College and university presidencies have become increasingly more complex under the weight of enormous internal and external changes. That complexity is significantly amplified at Historically Black Colleges and Universities whose presidents lead institutions that are significantly under-resourced amid decreases in state and federal funding and increases in academic costs. This study surveyed middle and senior managers at HBCUs to determine their perceptions of the college and university presidents. The results suggested that the HBCU presidents under examination largely exhibited transformational leadership characteristics. The results also suggest that male participants had higher individual consideration scores than female participants, suggesting that the presidents under review were perceived to have more interests in the Individual Concerns of their male employees vs. their female employees.

Book Attaining and Retaining Senior Leadership Positions

Download or read book Attaining and Retaining Senior Leadership Positions written by Felecia Cunningham and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The numbers of African American women presidents, provosts, and vice presidents of colleges and universities have increased over the past few decades. However, even with the slight increases, there are still significant disparities in regards to African American women in positions of leadership (American Council on Education, 2018). The intersection of race and gender may potentially cause African American women to experience discrimination and bias based upon either race or gender or both (Davis, 2016). This qualitative study examined the perceptions of African American women presidents, provosts, and vice-presidents of four-year, private Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) as to how they believe they were able to attain and remain in positions of leadership at their current and/or former institutions. The study more specifically examined the roles that race and gender play in the attainment and retention of senior leadership positions. By exploring the experiences of African American women senior administrators, four-year, private HBCUs can create environments that are more inclusive to African-American women and identify the best leaders, regardless of race or gender, to guide the institutions into the future. This study revealed that the participants attributed their senior leadership position attainment to work ethic, integrity, discipline, education and work experience. The participants also discussed some of the barriers to retention in senior leadership positions including work-life balance, not understanding the politics of an institution, not getting along with the board or stakeholders, not producing positive results, and sexism or gender biases. In relation to racial and gender bias and discrimination, most of the participants stated that at some point in their career they have experienced some type of bias or discrimination whether it was racial or gender related. For the most part, the racial discrimination was experienced at Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) or corporate organizations. Some of the participants, however, stated that they have not experienced racial bias or discrimination at HBCUS. Many of the participants noted that although they had not experienced racial discrimination at HBCUs, they had experienced gender discrimination and biases at HBCUs.
