Book Perceptions of Agricultural Leadership Academic Programs at 1862 Land grant Universities

Download or read book Perceptions of Agricultural Leadership Academic Programs at 1862 Land grant Universities written by Jackson Cole Alexander and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study sought to characterize perceptions of agricultural leadership programs in colleges of agriculture, food, life, human, or environmental sciences at 1862 land-grant institutions. Twenty-six academic programs were identified with a major, minor, graduate degree, specialization, concentration, or certificate in agricultural leadership. Programs were identified through analyzing the APLU and USDA NIFA websites, searching academic college websites, and contacting deans and departments heads. Objectives included identifying programs, describing the need for programs, describing evolution that has taken place within the discipline, describing faculty recommendations for future development and growth in the field, and examining why faculty believe programs are relevant. Mixed methods were employed with a survey instrument, document analysis, and qualitative interview. Quantitative data were analyzed via descriptive statistics, and qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis, including open and axial coding. Twenty-two respondents completed the survey, while 19 completed the interview. Agricultural leadership was formed from a need in the agricultural industry but holds roots in agricultural and extension education. The discipline evolved by taking on a broad appeal, as well as experiencing growth through the expansion of community and rural leadership development. Faculty recommended collaborative efforts across the discipline through establishing a professional organization, but also indicated a unified vision was imperative for growth. Faculty were asked about the outlook of the field and foresaw growth nationwide. When referencing the relevancy of agricultural leadership's role in academia, two themes emerged: a) agricultural leadership creates leaders through developing "human capital", and b) graduates promote industry growth through their political, policy, and public influence. Results aligned with research indicating the discipline should be analyzed to promote a unified vision for sustainability. This vision includes collaboration to establish a set of standards and proficiencies to prepare students for roles as industry leaders. The study identified the top agricultural leadership programs at 1862 land-grant institutions, which were the University of Florida, Texas A&M University, the University of Nebraska, Oklahoma State University, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Future recommendations for research included identifying perceptions of agricultural leadership beyond the scope of 1862 land-grant institutions.

Book Colleges of Agriculture at the Land Grant Universities

Download or read book Colleges of Agriculture at the Land Grant Universities written by Committee on the Future of the Colleges of Agriculture in the Land Grant University System and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-09-02 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since their inception in 1862, the U.S. land grant colleges have evolved to become the training ground for the nation's and the world's agriculturists. In this book, the committee examines the future of the colleges of agriculture in light of changing national priorities for the agricultural, food, and natural resource system. The effects of federal funding constraints also are examined, as are opportunities for growth presented by developments in science. The committee's preceding volume, Colleges of Agriculture at the Land Grant Universities: A Profile, is a compilation of the data that helped formulate the specific questions to be addressed. Colleges of Agriculture at the Land Grant Univerisities: Public Service and Public Policy is the deliberative report, rating conclusions and recommendations for institutional innovation and public policy. It addresses these and other questions: What education mission should colleges of agriculture adopt--and what strategies should they use--in light of significant changes in the agricultural complex? Research in agriculture is expected to respond to consumer demands, environmental concerns, world population growth, and increasing pressure on agricultural lands. Is the century-old structure of land grant university-based research up to the task? What is the role of extension in light of today's smaller farming communities and larger farming conglomerates? This volume is the culmination of a landmark evaluation of land grant colleges of agriculture, an American institution. This document will be of value to policymakers, administrators, and others involved in agricultural science and education.

Download or read book Colleges of Agriculture at the Land Grant Universities written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-09-27 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although few Americans work as farmers these days, agriculture on the whole remains economically importantâ€"playing a key role in such contemporary issues as consumer health and nutrition, worker safety and animal welfare, and environmental protection. This publication provides a comprehensive picture of the primary education system for the nation's agriculture industry: the land grant colleges of agriculture. Colleges of Agriculture at the Land Grant Universities informs the public debate about the challenges that will shape the future of these colleges and serves as a foundation for a second volume, which will present recommendations for policy and institutional changes in the land grant system. This book reviews the legislative history of the land grant system from its establishment in 1862 to the 1994 act conferring land grant status on Native American colleges. It describes trends that have shaped agriculture and agricultural education over the decadesâ€"the shift of labor from farm to factory, reasons for and effects of increased productivity and specialization, the rise of the corporate farm, and more. The committee reviews the system's three-part missionâ€"education, research, and extension serviceâ€"and through this perspective documents the changing nature of funding and examines the unique structure of the U.S. agricultural research and education system. Demographic data on faculties, students, extension staff, commodity and funding clusters, and geographic specializations profile the system and identify similarities and differences among the colleges of agriculture, trends in funding, and a host of other issues. The tables in the appendix provide further itemization about general population distribution, student and educator demographics, types of degree programs, and funding allocations. Concise commentary and informative graphics augment the detailed statistical presentations. This book will be important to policymakers, administrators, educators, researchers, and students of agriculture.

Download or read book Perceptions and Attitudes of College and University Administrators Towards Secondary Agricultural Education Programs and the FFA written by and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to describe the perceptions and attitudes of college and university administrators toward secondary agricultural education programs and the FFA. The study followed a descriptive survey research design. A researcher-modified questionnaire was sent electronically through Qualtrics to 265 college and university administrators who were in charge or undergraduate programs in agriculture, natural resources, and related science programs were offered. One hundred one individuals responded in the study for a response rate of 38 percent. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, and ANOVA. The study found that current college and university administrators of agriculture programs for undergraduates were males over 46 years of age and had worked in academic for over 20 years. These individuals had been in their current positions for between 1 and 6 years. Less than a majority of current college administrators has high school agriculture as a secondary student, had a supervised agricultural experience program (SAEP), or had been a member of the FFA. College administrators who worked at non land-grant universities, who had high school agriculture classes, were FFA members, had an SAEP, or who volunteered for FFA activities had stronger perceptions regarding secondary agricultural education programs and the FFA than did their counterparts. Recommendations are made to work with secondary agricultural education programs in establishing positive relationships with teachers and students and to offer opportunities to expose students to educational opportunities on college campuses. Additional research should be conducted with faculty members on their relationships with secondary agricultural education programs and the FFA.

Book Transforming Agricultural Education for a Changing World

Download or read book Transforming Agricultural Education for a Changing World written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-11-16 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the next ten years, colleges of agriculture will be challenged to transform their role in higher education and their relationship to the evolving global food and agricultural enterprise. If successful, agriculture colleges will emerge as an important venue for scholars and stakeholders to address some of the most complex and urgent problems facing society. Such a transformation could reestablish and sustain the historical position of the college of agriculture as a cornerstone institution in academe, but for that to occur, a rapid and concerted effort by our higher education system is needed to shape their academic focus around the reality of issues that define the world's systems of food and agriculture and to refashion the way in which they foster knowledge of those complex systems in their students. Although there is no single approach to transforming agricultural education, a commitment to change is imperative.

Book The Land Grant Colleges and the Reshaping of American Higher Education

Download or read book The Land Grant Colleges and the Reshaping of American Higher Education written by Roger L. Geiger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work provides a critical reexamination of the origin and development of America's land-grant colleges and universities, created by the most important piece of legislation in higher education. The story is divided into five parts that provide closer examinations of representative developments.Part I describes the connection between agricultural research and American colleges. Part II shows that the responsibility of defining and implementing the land-grant act fell to the states, which produced a variety of institutions in the nineteenth century. Part III details the first phase of the conflict during the latter decades of the nineteenth century about whether land colleges were intended to be agricultural colleges, or full academic institutions. Part IV focuses on the fact that full-fledged universities became dominant institutions of American higher education. The final part shows that the land-grant mission is alive and well in university colleges of agriculture and, in fact, is inherent to their identity.Including some of the best minds the field has to offer, this volume follows in the fine tradition of past books in Transaction's Perspectives on the History of Higher Education series.
